My body felt very strange. I felt more relaxed than ever. My she-wolf was looking at the whole thing with big yellow eyes of wonder. I don't know why, for some reason, I felt better than usual, and I seemed to have more strength than necessary.
"Come on, I guess it's about time." Lilly chuckled.
"Well let's pack our bags." I frowned silently.
It took us less time to assemble the boxes than it did to unpack everything. Flower petals were everywhere. It was probably full of them by now, even in my rucksack. With a big smile we made our way through the forest, and the sea of petals stayed behind.
"That's very sweet." Lilly finally spoke.
I knew she would not leave this topic alone. I rolled my eyes before she could see, because I guarantee she was expecting my answer.
"That was nice." I shrugged.
Finally we stood at the gate of my house, the sun almost rolling down. Lilly squeezed me tightly in her arms.
"See you tomorrow." Lilly smiled broadly.
"As always." I gave Lilly a wink.
I opened the gate of the house and walked towards the house at a fast pace. There was not a single light to be seen, which meant the house was empty. I unlocked the front door and rushed inside. I put the stuff back where they belong. I ran into my room and changed my clothes to something a little more comfortable and warmer. I went back to the first floor and opened the fridge. Tonight I decided to surprise my parents with dinner. I took a brisket out of the freezer and a bunch of vegetables out of the fridge. Time was running out, and the wall clock said it was already six o'clock in the evening. Meat with beans and peppers was simmering in the oven. Mashed potatoes were steaming in a pot, and a mountain of lettuce was sitting in a white box. I may not be the best cook, but I am sure they will love it. With a spatula, I was using a piece of meat that had browned nicely in the pan. The door banged loudly and Mum and Dad walked through.
"What smells so good in here?" Mum's voice came from the corridor.
"I've got two portions." Dad's laughter spread through the house.
I quickly took care of the three plates full of food on the table. Dad and Mum walked into the kitchen and smiled broadly and said hello.
"How was your day?" Mum asked as she sat down at the table.
"Lilly and I had a great picnic in the woods." I said with big smile in my face.
"Where's that smell coming from?" Dad furrowed his brow as he looked around the kitchen.
"What smell?" Mum looked at Dad.
"Wolf's Flower, that plant with the healing properties that someone told you about." Dad calmly told Mom.
"It's probably my fault." I raised my hand and smiled.
Dad and Mum's eyes rested on me for a moment. They looked at me with their eyes, waiting for an answer.
"This pendant with the Wolf Flower." I turned the blue pendant between my fingers.
"Where did you get it?" Dad asked.
At this point I didn't know what to say, but I couldn't come up with any convincing lie. I lowered my eyes slightly to my plate.
"A gift from Lorcan." I said in a low voice.
"You're saying Lorcan gave it to you?" Mum rolled her eyes as she looked at me.
" Yes, I found the gift at our door, yesterday." I said, and with my fork I threw a piece of meat.
" He's protecting you." Mum smiled.
" I hope it helps you." Dad gave me a crooked look.
" Why do you hope? I hear doubt in your voice." Mum looked at Dad.
"The wolf flower is commonly used in werewolf medicine. Nevertheless, it is also known by humans, just not as widely." Dad pushed the food with his fork.
" Well I hope he knows what he's doing." I shrugged and smiled."
" I'm sure that should help you" Dad smiled.
The rest of the dinner passed in silence, and at the end of it my mother suggested spending the evening with her family. Of course I couldn't stay away, because these were the last days I would spend with Mum and Dad. Soon we all sat down in the guest room and spent the rest of the evening together. We started with jokes, then watched a horror film and finally played board games until late. This time is unique and so precious.
Dad yawned loudly to announce his tiredness. Mum was sitting in an armchair reading a book with a small lamp on. I was lying in the armchair and looking at the ceiling. The armchair creaked and Dad finally disappeared behind the living room door, going to bed. I got up after Dad and said goodnight to Mum and went to my room. I quickly changed into my nightclothes and picked up a book by switching on the table lamp. It was still quite early for bed, and there was still a long walk in the fields ahead. My eyes began to run over the lines of text, the time flying by at lightning speed. I closed my eyes lightly, letting them rest from the fine print and the poor lighting.
I could feel the wolf in me begin to tread restlessly, which means freedom time. I put the book on the bookcase and snoozed for a moment, listening to my surroundings. There was no sound of my dad or mum in the house, they must be asleep. I stood up quietly from the bed and put a small black bag over my shoulder. I jumped out of the window and ran towards the forest. The bright moon and the stars showed me the way. I stopped at my usual spot, put my rucksack on the ground and lightly took off my dress.
After a short pain therapy, I was finally confident. My hands turned into big paws, my face into a cute little snout, my skin into a soft fur. With my wet nose, I pushed my backpack closer to the tree trunk, hiding it. My sensitive ears picked up the sounds of the environment, of which there were a million around me. Trying not to stay in my original spot for too long, I started running through the fields towards the woods. A strong wind whistled past my ears and my thoughts were completely free.
It felt so good to be myself, running through the meadows and not worrying about anything. My eyes automatically met the path I had already seen today. My feet carried me towards the place where Lilly and I had our picnic today. My sensitive sense of smell was beginning to pick up the very strong scent of the Wolf Flower. White flying petals appeared before my eyes. The surroundings were not so beautiful anymore, but my wolf loved them immensely. I lay down and started to wriggle among the white petals. Of course, it might look silly from the side, but it feels really good.
A loud crunching sound reached my ears and I was instantly on all fours. My ears strained to catch every extraneous sound. My yellowish eyes darted among the dark trees looking for the culprit of the sound. Another loud crash sounded behind me. I quickly turned towards the source of the sound, yet it was too slow. My eyes managed to focus on a light brown wolf coming straight at me. His yellowish eyes were full of anger. I tried to avoid the attack at the last second, but the wolf's claws were digging into my stomach. I growled angrily and turned towards the brown wolf who was standing just two metres away. He was pointing his big white teeth straight at me. I put my front paw slightly forward and growled angrily. He thinks I give up so easily, he's a fool. I knew full well that this werewolf was stronger than me and much older, but I wasn't going to give up that easily. My advantage was speed and agility. After another angry snarl from me, I saw more yellowish eyes appearing behind the brown wolf. My mind tried to calculate how many werewolves were behind the brown one, but it was hopeless.
In one swift movement, the brown wolf took off running straight at me at high speed. I put my back paw back so hard that it was firmly planted in the ground. Everything before my eyes was like a slow motion film. I saw the brown wolf lunging straight at me, wanting to cut my throat. I could see it written right on his snout. For one second he hesitated, I didn't know the reason. I took advantage of that instantly, turned my side and hit the approaching wolf with all my strength. One loud knock sounded and the brown wolf crumpled to the ground. I knew I hadn't done any serious damage because werewolves have a gene that heals their prey quickly. Mine was almost healed, but it still hurt a little. The brown wolf was still lying on the ground, breathing heavily. I lifted my eyes from his and looked around, watching how the others would behave. To my surprise, none of the others stepped forward. All but one. He emerged from the shadow of the tree, walking straight towards me. When I was only five metres away, I realised that he was standing in front of me. Lorcan was looking straight at me with his red eyes.
At this moment it was clear why the brown wolf had stopped in mid-attack. He had received Alpha's order to stop, and I took advantage of it. I didn't want to stay here a second longer. Lorcan kept his distance from me, and the brown wolf was lying next to his feet. We stood in complete silence for ten minutes until the brown wolf got up from his prone position and took his place next to Lorcan. This time the brown wolf was as calm as ever, sitting on Lorcan's right side.
I returned my paws to a normal position, not wanting to sign my own death warrant in front of so many werewolves. Though I was sure that none would touch me again. I turned my head towards the rising sun that announced my time to go home. I turned my back on Lorcan and took an easy step towards where I had left my clothes. I looked over my shoulder to see if anyone was following me. Luckily for me, all the werewolves stayed where they were. Not a single one moved, not even Lorcan.
Finally, I returned to my seat and paused again. I listened to the sounds around me, just to make sure I was alone. After a few minutes of fidgeting on the ground, I fit into my human clothes again. I quickly grabbed my rucksack, put on my dress and headed towards the village on a light cycle. I felt a slight pain in my left side but ignored it. With one easy hop I reached the top of the roof and the next I was standing in my room. I looked under the desk, knowing that at any second my mother could walk through the door.
Just two minutes later, my mother's footsteps sounded at my door. A soft knock sounded in the room.
"Sweetheart, get up." Mum's voice came from the other side of the door.
"Okay mom." I said in the laziest voice possible.
Then I felt that my dress which was under the hamper. I lifted the corner of the hamper and the side of my dress was soaked with red liquid. I lifted the dress up to where it was wet. This was my left side, or rather my ribs. There was a huge toy left by the brown wolf. I was open as a human being before the toy had time to heal. Now I have to wait twice.
"The scar will remain." I muttered softly to myself under my nose.
