Fuel to the Fire

Episode 5 – “Fuel to the Fire” The office lights burned late into the night, painting Li Xue’s desk in a stark white glow. Papers were scattered in careful chaos, contracts sprawled across every surface, ink smudged by trembling fingers. A mug of steaming coffee sat nearby, its surface rippling with her restless movements. She picked up a document, reading line after line, but her mind wandered. Lei Feng… what are you doing now? Did you think of me at all? Her chest tightened. She set the paper down, pressing her palm to her forehead, and a single tear slipped down, smearing the margin. The ink blended with the salty drop, leaving a mark she could never erase. “Stop it,” she whispered to herself. “Stop thinking. This… this is fuel, Xue. Fuel to rise higher.” She reached for another stack of papers, determination sharpening her movements. Coffee became her companion, the bitter liquid fueling her long hours. Pen scratched against paper as ideas flowed, strategies formed, and her empire began to take shape on these scattered sheets. --- Somewhere between drafting financial plans and outlining boardroom strategies, a familiar knock interrupted her focus. Hui Ying entered, holding a small bouquet of white lilies. “Thought you could use a reminder that someone still thinks you’re amazing,” she said, laying the flowers beside Li Xue. Li Xue smiled faintly, brushing a tear from her cheek. “Thank you… but… I can’t stop thinking about him. Even now.” Hui Ying shook her head gently. “Then let those thoughts burn, Xue. Let that heartbreak make you unstoppable. Every tear, every memory—use it. Turn it into fire.” Li Xue looked down at the lilies, then at the papers marked with her tears. Slowly, a sense of calm determination settled over her. “I will rise… brighter than a phoenix,” she murmured, voice steady. “No one… no one will ever break me like that again.” --- Days blurred into nights. Coffee cups stacked like small towers, deadlines were met with a precision that amazed her colleagues, and her office became a kingdom she ruled with fierce focus. But in stolen moments—sipping coffee by the window, fingers brushing the petals of the lilies, or glancing at the city lights—her thoughts drifted back to Lei Feng. I miss him… but I’ll show him what he left behind. One evening, after a 14-hour day, Hui Ying and Lian Hua sneaked into her office, armed with snacks, blankets, and their usual teasing grins. “Xue,” Hui Ying said, plopping onto the couch with a dramatic sigh. “If you don’t stop working, I swear I’ll start calling you The Paper Monster.” Lian Hua joined in, pointing at the teetering piles of documents. “Yes! And every time you sip coffee like that, we’re going to make fun of you until you laugh.” Li Xue chuckled softly, finally allowing herself a moment of lightness. “You two are impossible.” “Impossible?” Hui Ying snorted, tossing a crumpled paper ball at her. “We are the only sane things keeping you human, Xue! Now smile, or we’re dumping coffee on your head.” Li Xue laughed, a full, freeing sound that hadn’t echoed in weeks. “Alright, alright! You win. I’ll smile… just this once.” The three friends leaned back, sharing warmth, laughter, and tiny moments of reprieve in the midst of chaos. Even as the city lights twinkled outside and the empire she was building grew larger every day, Li Xue felt something she hadn’t in a long time—hope, friendship, and the first sparks of joy since heartbreak.
