Shattered Vows

Episode 3 – “Shattered Vows” The morning sun glinted off the polished tiles of the bridal suite. Li Xue stood before the mirror, her white gown cascading elegantly to the floor. The delicate lace hugged her shoulders, and in her hands she held a bouquet of pure white lilies—symbols of love, purity, and the life she had dreamed about. Her friends, Hui Ying and Lian Hua, fussed gently around her, adjusting the veil and straightening the folds of the gown. “Li Xue, you look… perfect,” Hui Ying whispered, brushing a stray curl from her face. “You really do,” Lian Hua added, her eyes shimmering with pride. “He’s a lucky man, Xue.” Li Xue smiled softly, trying to push down the flutter of nerves in her chest. “I just… I hope today goes perfectly,” she murmured. Her mother, also in a soft lavender dress, placed a hand on her shoulder. “It will, darling. Today is your day. Remember, you’re surrounded by people who love you.” Li Xue nodded, her heart swelling. Everything had been planned, every detail accounted for. This was the life she had imagined with Lei Feng. A small home, quiet mornings, laughter, love—a lifetime with him. The sound of the front door opening made everyone pause. Lei Feng had arrived. “Li Xue…” his voice floated down the hallway, calm and familiar. She turned, her heart leaping. He smiled, but something was… off. Slight tension in his jaw, a tightness in his eyes. “You look beautiful,” he said, walking closer. “Absolutely… breathtaking.” Li Xue’s lips curved into a gentle smile. “Thank you, Lei Feng. I… I can’t believe this day is finally here.” Hui Ying nudged her shoulder. “Go on, you two. Enjoy your moment.” They walked together down the aisle in the small family chapel, sunlight streaming through stained glass, casting rainbow patterns over the polished floor. Her father, Ming Wei, nodded proudly from the front row. Friends whispered, eyes glistening with emotion. But as they reached the altar, Li Xue noticed something strange. Lei Feng’s hands trembled slightly. He avoided her gaze. “Lei Feng?” she whispered, clutching her lilies tighter. He hesitated. “Li Xue… I… I need to tell you something.” Her heart skipped a beat. Not now. Not today. Please, not now. Suddenly, he took a step back, his eyes darting away. “I… I can’t go through with this,” he said, voice trembling. “I… I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you.” “What?!” Li Xue’s breath caught in her throat. Her lilies trembled as she tightened her grip. “What are you saying?” “I can’t marry you,” he admitted, stepping away. “I… I’m leaving. I’m so sorry, Xue. I… I have to go.” The words hit her like a physical blow. The white lilies in her hands seemed to weigh a ton. Her knees buckled. The chapel blurred around her—her mother’s gasp, her friends screaming her name, the echo of Lei Feng’s footsteps walking away. “Xue!” Hui Ying shouted, grabbing her arm. “Li Xue!” She could barely hear them. Her body gave out. The world spun as she fainted, the lilies slipping from her hands and scattering across the polished floor. When she awoke, the room was a swirl of concerned faces. Her mother held her close, whispering soothing words. “Xue, it’s okay… breathe. You’re safe.” Hui Ying knelt beside her, tears streaming. “He left? He really left?” Li Xue’s lips quivered. “He… he didn’t even leave… a note. Nothing…” Her father’s stern face softened. “Xue… sometimes people aren’t meant to stay. But you… you will rise above this.” Even as her friends and family surrounded her with comfort, Li Xue felt the cold, sharp edge of betrayal. Her dreams, her wedding, the life she had imagined—all gone in a heartbeat. Her white gown, once a symbol of love and hope, now felt like a cage of shattered promises. And yet, deep inside, something sparked—a faint, flickering resolve.
