The company used me up and tossed me aside, firing me the moment the project was finished.

My manager figured it would be cheaper to hand maintenance to a rookie on a lower salary.

What he didn't understand was that constant changes in requirements had left the company's system patched together with layers of fixes and riddled with bugs. It wasn't something just anyone could untangle.

Sure enough, the moment I walked out, the bugs blew up.

Chapter 1
At the project celebration, my direct manager, Grant, lifted a glass of champagne and stepped in front of the giant screen. Then he announced, "This is the system I led my team through 18 months of late nights to build." The applause started just as I came back from the server room downstairs. I had drawn the system architecture behind him. I had written the core modules. Even the failure that had nearly wrecked the demo minutes earlier had been fixed by me, alone, in the server room. Grant didn't mention me once. He spotted me in the crowd, smiled, and waved me over. "Maya, come here." I thought he was finally going to introduce me—the person who had actually led the project. Instead, he shoved his phone into my hand and turned to throw an arm around the CEO's shoulder. "Take a group photo of management. You know which angle will get the whole system in the shot." I stood below the stage and took their victory photo for them. Everyone in the picture was smiling like they had earned the credit. The one person who had actually finished the project was left outside the frame. Grant looked over the photo, then gave my shoulder an approving pat. "Not bad. Someone still has to watch the servers tonight, so skip the drinks." Before the party ended, Grant told me to keep monitoring the system. In front of everyone, the CEO promised me a bonus of 20,000 dollars on Friday and said I would take charge of the AI team next quarter. The next morning, my badge stopped working. I swiped it again. The turnstile flashed a harsh red. The receptionist knew me perfectly well, yet she looked at me like I was a stranger. She escorted me to a conference room. Grant and HR were already inside, with a termination agreement printed and waiting on the table. Grant didn't even let me sit. "The project is over, and the company has decided to eliminate your position. Hand over everything and leave." I stared at him. "Last night, you had me stay up all night monitoring the system." "Exactly. The system is stable now, so we don't need labor this expensive anymore." "What about my bonus?" Grant smiled. "Bonuses go out on Friday. You're leaving today, so of course you no longer qualify." So that was it. The applause, the toasts, and the promises from last night had all been bait to keep me around long enough to fix one last bug. They had even timed my termination so they could kick me out before the bonus landed. "Who's replacing me?" I asked. "Evan." Grant sounded almost cheerful. "He's young, obedient, and makes only a third of what you do. Maintaining a finished system doesn't require a senior engineer like you who is always trying to make everyone anxious." 3 months ago, Evan had still been an intern. He had never completed a full system deployment by himself. Grant leaned back in his chair and watched me like he was enjoying the moment I finally realized how little he thought I was worth. "Maya, this company has no shortage of talent. Don't think you're irreplaceable." I said nothing. When I got back to my desk, Evan was already sitting in my chair. He had thrown last night's unfinished coffee into the trash, while a new computer sat in front of him with every permission already enabled. Those permissions had to be requested at least 3 days in advance. They hadn't decided to fire me that morning. They had only needed me to keep Grant's system running through one last night, then teach the bargain replacement how to do my job. Evan jerked his chin at me. "Give me the admin password. Grant said you have to hand over everything to me before noon." I set the handover document on the desk. He made it through only two pages before closing it in irritation. "Why make this so complicated? No wonder Grant says you deliberately make simple things sound dangerous." As he spoke, he clicked open a gray folder on the desktop—Atlas-Dx. It was an experimental prototype I had personally sealed away 6 months earlier and marked in red: DO NOT DEPLOY. Evan grinned at me. "Grant said this is what we're building next." Less than an hour after I was fired, they had already opened what I had locked away.
