Chapter One
"Melissa Hawkins, you are making your father late!", a woman screams while standing at the base of a staircase just as a door is slammed shut upstairs and a teenage girl runs down the staircase.
"I'm ready Mum, I'm ready", Melissa shouts as she comes off the staircase.
"Finally", her mother, Selena sighs just before her eyes narrow. "Didn't you try on this uniform before getting it?"
"It fits me so well, doesn't it?," Melissa beams and twirls around.
"This undersize uniform?"
"How is it undersize?", Melissa asks surprisedly.
"Everything about it is wrong Melissa, are you going to Everly high school to seduce all the boys?", Selena complains and Melissa bursts into laughter.
"I don't even have the body figure to seduce a twelve year-old so don't tease me", Melissa replies when she finally gets over her laughter and Selena frowns.
"If it was someone else, that would sound believable, but it certainly is not for me. I know the number of eyes that stare at you whenever we go out and I've also heard of the number of males you have blocked due to their petty advances."
"Disadvantages of having a computer genius as a brother", she groans. "Devon has been messing with my phone again, hasn't he?"
"He cares about you", Selena shrugs.
"And what makes you think they're after me because I'm attractive? Have you forgotten who your husband is? People only come after me because of that."
"What makes you think so?"
"I know so actually. Just look at me, I'm not as full-breasted as my mates and I have a tiny a*s, I'm not even all that social. What's attractive about that?"
"Stop looking down on yourself honey", Selena coos and strokes her daughter's hair. Melissa had become slightly insecure ever since she entered the puberty age and it got worrisome sometimes.
"I'm just stating the facts here", Melissa mumbles.
"Those are not facts. I actually think you're very attractive sweetheart, and you look even more ravishing now that you're wearing this undersize uniform, so please, go take it off. Wear any of your clothes today, then go and get a bigger one today", Selena mutters and Melissa pouts.
"Mum!"
"I can't believe Catherine let you take such an undersize uniform."
"Cathy understands that this is the style of the uniform. If it's bigger than this, it'll be ugly", Melissa explains to her mother but Selena glares at her.
"Go change now"
"But Mum....", Melissa whines.
"Melissa, don't anger me, go and take this uniform off right now!", Selena growls just as Melissa's father, Paul, enters the house.
"What's going on here? Melissa, have you forgotten that I'm waiting for you?", he queries and Melissa immediately runs to her father then grabs his arm.
"Daddy, Mum wants me to take off my uniform", Melissa reports and Paul frowns.
"Why?", he asks his wife.
"I want her to collect a new uniform instead of this. Aren't you seeing how it looks on her?", Selena fires and Paul turns to take a good look at Melissa.
"Darling, don't you think your uniform is too small?", Paul complains once he realized what Selena was talking about.
"It's not!", Melissa argues.
"Maybe you should change it like your mother said, this is just your first year at Everly high and you're in your growing years right now."
"We can just get a new one if it gets too small", Melissa whines.
"Melissa...", Paul mutters in disagreement and she immediately increases the force of her grip on his arm.
"I'll make sure to take a bigger size for the extra uniform, but please, don't force me to return this uniform", she pleads and Paul huffs. "Thank you Daddy!"
"It's only because we're running late", Paul gruffs and Melissa smiles.
"You always give this child what she wants", Selena complains and Paul chuckles.
"It's not my fault she's so adorable, is it?", he retorts.
"Yes, it is, it's your fault for being such a handsome man and marrying a beautiful woman", Melissa chirps and her parents laugh.
"Let's get going now Melissa, you're so going to be late", Paul urges and starts walking out.
"It's my first day so it doesn't mean anything", Melissa waives as she begins following.
"It means everything", Paul grunts and she chuckles knowing that even if going late was a misdeed, it certainly wasn't going to be a problem for her because she knew her father was eminent enough for her to be treated well.
"I hope you'll be back home early today", Melissa asks as she opens the door of her father's car.
"I don't know", he shrugs.
"Cathy said she is coming over today."
"Your mother is certainly going to give her a tongue lashing for letting you take such a small uniform", Paul chuckles as he starts the engine of his car.
"I don't really know why the both of you are overreacting, my mates wear clothes that are more revealing than this."
"Your human mates", he points out and Melissa frowns. "I know we don't go to our hometown often, but I don't want you to ever forget that we have a strong sense of morality which should not be tainted by the lifestyle of humans."
"But I thought you always said that we should always try to blend in with humans since we are already very conspicuous ordinarily", Melissa argues.
"Not at the expense of our values", Paul rectifies and Melissa sighs.
"Dad, why do I have to go to Everly high school?", she asks after some minutes on the journey and her father's eyes immediately widen.
"I thought you liked the idea of going to Everly high school", he wonders.
"I don't know... Maybe it's because I've never really had a choice. I mean... since you're the magicians' ambassador to the American government, it would be wrong of you not to send your child to the government's recommended school for magicians intending to get a high school diploma"
"So what are you trying to say now?", Paul asks softly.
"Don't get so worried, I'm just nervous since I've never gotten along with fellow magicians so well as you already know."
"You don't get along with anyone at all, magician or not", Paul mutters and they chuckle.
"But still, magicians usually see me as a competition, as if I'm an enemy, and now I'm going to be attending a school filled with magicians. It's not wrong of me to feel unsettled, is it?"
"I think you'll be fine, Melissa. Stop bothering yourself".
"You think so?"
"I'm sure of that", he comforts and squeezes her hand.
"I still feel like I would have been better off attending a human high school."
"Or maybe you just feel that way because I sent you and your siblings to schools where you were the only magicians and it was even hidden that you were magicians until when it was time to enter high school."
"Maybe I'm really just used to that truly", she murmurs.
"I hope that you will find friends now that you are going to be attending a new school, especially as it is filled with people like you", Paul wishes and she smiles.
"Thanks for caring, Dad", she appreciates.
"Of course I have to care, I'm your father."
