The rest of the week went to slow and uneventful as we went through the different works we had to do. Heather and Samuel has been out in the field most of the week since the family had put out missing person fliers with the reward we have had many calls, but every sighting turns out as a dead end but as a cop you learn to be patient.
I am currently reading through the latest sighting reported and make some notes I notice my Cap talking with a few beat cops and set my file down closing it deciding to check my email once I finish sending replies It's time to go give my report to Cap before I head out to check these latest sightings.
Gregory came in and asked if I was ready. I told him yes, and we both went to Caps office, knocking on the door. He opened the door, and we stepped aside to allow the others to leave. "Sorry, Cap didn't know you were busy," he replied. "No issue, they are done anyway!"
We walk in and take our seats across from him. He looks stressed out, and I am concerned he is not just my captain he's my friend too "Hey cap you, ok?" I ask he looks like he didn't sleep much "Yeah I'm fine just stressed out what do you have on the Water's case her father is on my phone every hour it seems, anything new there?" I sigh because I know he is stressed, and I have nothing to give him other than we are going to check out some leads he nods his head looking lost in thought he says "What about the ex you talk to him yet?" Both of us reply "No" and. "He has been difficult to reach. When we went to his office he was out. There were multiple calls and no response. I don't think it's a coincidence either. Honestly, he, seems to be avoiding contact with us, so I thought if we can't catch him at work or home, we could stake out one of his places and wait till he comes in and grab him then." Cap thinks for a moment and nods his head."Yeah, that could work if you don't catch him at either place today. Let me know, and I'll get the Cheif to sign off on surveillance of his work and home." I smile at him and Greg, "That's perfect. We will report back by shift change and let you know. " He agreed, and we headed out, getting into the cruiser. Greg says, "What are you thinking?" Starting the car, I tell him, "Let's go to his office first, see if we can catch him there first thing this morning "OK, let's go," he replied, and I set off. We chat. Idally as I drive to our destination, when we arrived I parked, and we get out, I heard my phone ringing.
It's a number I don't recognize, so I silence it. They can leave a message as we walk inside. I notice people looking at us. I smile and wave. We went to reception and asked for Mr. Knight showing her my badge. She says one moment and calls someone. When she hangs up, she tells us to go to floor 4 and wait for his secretary. Greg thanked her, and we went to the elevator. Once inside, I turned to Greg, "Does it feel to you like people seem scared to have us here, or is it just me?" his reply was what I had thought.
We both definitely noticed the change in vibe from the first time we came here. The elevator dings signaling we have arrived at our floor. As we stepped out, I saw the secretary, and we approached. She smiles and says, "Mr Knight is in a meeting and will be out shortly, and we can wait if we would like," so we take a seat and wait.
We sat and waited about 20 mins before we were approached by the secretary informing us that "Mr Knight would see us now." Hmm, I feel like this was deliberate, and he made us wait just to be an aŝs.
We entered into the office being led by his secretary. I turned to her. "What's your name, miss?" Pulling my notepad from my top pocket, she seemed surprised, " You never introduced yourself." ..." Um..fl. Flores ma'am, " she stammers out nervously. Hmmm. your last name? "Hunter," she replies "OK thank you, Flores Hunter." I said, turning from her. I looked at Gregory to see he was smirking at me.
I have to try hard not to smile at his stupid face, keeping my expression as neutral as I can. I look at the man sitting behind his desk with a scowl on his face. I walked further into the room, and he finally stood to greet us. "Hello, what can I do for you? I apologize that I haven't gotten around to contacting you, but you must know I am a busy man. In fact, I have about 5 minutes before my next meeting. What is it that you need?" his cocky attitude irritates me and I think Greg can tell because he speaks before I can. "Busy man or not, Mr Knight, we have made several attempts to speak to you, and yet we never heard from you. I am sure you are aware that we are investigating the disappearance of Destiny Waters, and we have questions for you!"
I stepped in and asked, "You do know Ms Waters, correct? we have information that you actually spoke to her the day she went missing. " He nods, and clearing his throat, he says, "Yeah, of course I know her, we dated in high school, but what does that have to do with anything? It was 4 years ago. She is my friend now, and I am also dating her best friend." he took a seat, offering us a chair. I stood behind Greg's chair, watching his reaction to the questions.
He seemed to be hiding something, and I was not convinced he wasn't involved. When Greg was done asking the basic questions, I decided to ask him if he knew about any boyfriends she has now or any ex's instantly his demeanor changed his eyes went dark, and his fists clenched tight, he took in a big breath. He didn't like that question. He spat out, angry with gritted teeth, "She doesn't. have. a. boyfriend! she never has!" I swear I heard him say she never will under his breath, hmm..
I was proud I had gotten under his skin a bit with that the little fûcker I know he had something to do with her going missing. My cop senses are on high alert. Now I just had to work my case and collect any and all facts before I take this asŝhole out, and I will, I just hope the girl is alright, and we find her safe and alive I let Greg finish the interview, after we departed in the elevator I looked at Gregory and asked him what he thought about what he told us he tells me he isn't sure, but something was off, but he wasn't sure if it was this case or something else, but he was willing to bet that Mr Knight had his hands in alot of things that were not considered exactly legal" I have to agree with him on that but not that he is not involved in this case.
I just have this gut feeling that says he knows something more, and I'm determined to find out what that is. we get to the cruiser and my phone buzzes in my pocket I fish it out and see a voice message Greg is driving, so I climb in buckle and hit send to the voicemail box and listen "Hello, my name is William Sholt I am calling in regard to Destiny Waters she would like to speak to you, but she has asked for No one to know about her call to you, for safety reasons. can you give me a call at this number please and thank you." To say I am surprised is an understatement.
I listen again and have Greg listen to it as well, he's just as surprised as I am it's been 9 days since she was reported missing, and we haven't had one good lead until now that is! And she wants to talk I instantly find the number I didn't recognize and sent to voicemail earlier well damn I should have answered it, but I'm calling now, so I hit send and wait with bated breath for an answer it rings a few times when someone answers in a small sweet voice. "Hello?" I answer "Hello" my name is Detective Danica Evans, and I am returning a call I had from this number from a Mr sholt is he available?" The line goes quiet, and I hear muffled sounds when a man comes on the line.
Hello detective I'm William sholt I'm glad you called back I have you on speakerphone and Destiny is sitting here with me now before we go any further I will tell you she has amnesia and can't remember alot, so please be patient with her. I reply, "Thank you for that information," and started by asking the basic question about what she remembers, I hear her fear and she is hesitant to talk, but William reassures her that It's OK, so she tells me her story.
OK I'm shocked and so is Gregory, from the sound of his voice when he asks her to come to the station, but William refuses and insists we come to her, as she does not feel safe, I can't say, I blame her if what they are saying is true.
She is lucky to be alive right now, so we make a plan to meet with her and William. I have a feeling he will not be going anywhere. She is a lucky girl to have someone in her corner because clearly someone had tried to hurt her or worse... poor thing.. Gregory and I get back to the station and go straight to Caps's office, knocking on the door.
We enter when granted permission and tell Cap the recent developments about the case, and he gives us a little. Nugget of information that there were 3 men arrested for trespassing close to the area that Destiny had said they were currently staying I wonder if it's connected or not, but we can definitely see where this leads us and if it's nothing then good, but it may be something, so we won't cast it aside just yet.
Gregory informs the Cap of the arrangements we have made to go visit Destiny Waters, and he approved for us to take 2 or 3 days to go get her statement and any other evidence we can find.
Just because she is alive and well for the most part does not mean she is out of danger, so we will do things her way for now. Leaving the office. I stopped Gregory and asked when he wanted to go to Soloway to meet Destiny. He said he would be ready by 3 pm. today.
We just had to handle a few things before we go, we parted ways and went about taking care of everything, so I could be out of the office for a few days. It's not often that we have to spend time out of town for work, so I am just a little excited, only a little, though....
