Chapter 1
Jackie popped the cork and foam flew out, filling the air and concrete. We all laughed and cheered as we ran to kiss her 'happy birthday'.
"Hey, let's go down there!" I pointed at the pavement before the seashore. I jumped a wall and ran down the stairs as the others followed me. We sat on a wall, turning on music and expelling everyone from the location with our disarray. Jo, Clara, and Jackie immediately started dancing and the rest of us cheered them on as they acted like hookers at the shore.
"Hey, isnt that Mr. Damon?" Annie asked, popping her head beside mine.
I looked back as I heard his name. "Oh, yeah, it is." I smiled maliciously as I noticed he wasn't alone, remembering that he told us how he hates when students talk to him outside of school - especially if he was with his friends.
"Hey!!" I yelled and waved. "Mr. D!!" He glanced at us from the corner of his eyes, but pretended not to know us. "Hey, loser!!!" I kept yelling. This time he looked straight at me, indignantly. I laughed out with my friends.
Mr. Damon approached us, and that's when I recognized the men beside him. "Isn't that Mr. Cohen?" Jackie whispered to me and my eyes widened.
"Who's the loser?" Mr. Damon asked in a jokingly-annoyed look. He tried to kick my butt but I dodged, laughing out.
I laughed and tried to joke with him as usual, without giving too much importance to the man standing to his right. What's he doing here?
"Hey, Em." the jerk spoke up in an awkward manner.
"It's Emily." I said harshly, glaring at him. I could notice everyone's reactions as my mood shifted the moment he spoke.
"Yelling out like that... Are you drunk?" Mr. Damon asked, knowing that I'm usually shy.
Unfortunately, not... I forced a sad face. The waiter didn't let me drink...
"Your immaturity revealed your age, huh?" he wheezed.
I pouted and glared at him. "How about you," I looked at the two standing on each side of him, "three teachers out together at night, how fun." I said sarcastically. Andrew gulped at what I said, as if he had something important to tell me.
"Better than eight hens dancing around like drunkards at the beach." he joked, shooting up an eyebrow to make fun of us.
"Hey, that wasn't me! That was Jo and Jackie." I pointed at the culprits who were laughing out like a couple of alcoholics. The effects of Ice Tea and Coca Cola on teenagers...
Yeah, sure. Always blame it on Jackie. he said with a mocking smile, crossing his arms with a smug look. "Now, where did you say they didn't let you drink?" Mr. Damon raised an eyebrow. "Was it that bar up there?" He gestured his head up towards a hut on the seaside.
Where's he going with this? I twisted my lips and glared at him. He grinned, noticing my expression. "That's where we were heading right now. Cause, you know, we're allowed to drink." Mr. Damon stuck out his tongue and started walking past us with the other two following.
I scowled playfully as he waved and said one last sentence that made me grit my teeth, "See you at school, kiddo." Urgh!! Why does he always call me 'kiddo'? He knows it annoys me! I thought for a while, but couldn't find anything to reply.
The i***t on the right then stopped and turned back around, "Oh, Em - I mean... Emily - You'll be seeing a lot more of me from now on." he paused for a bit as my eyes widened. "I just thought you should know." he spoke coyly but had still managed to say those stupid words.
"Wh... What do you mean?" My mouth gaped open and those were the only words I could let out.
"I'm going back to Eastwood."
"What?" I replied in horror.
"I might be your teacher again." At that moment, I could do nothing but freeze and stare at him stupidly. "I... guess I'll see you soon."
Everyone else around us seemed confused. As he turned around, the other two teachers shrugged, walking away from us.
"What was that?" the other girls surrounded me, except for Alex who was the only one who knew about the truth. They joked and teased, shipping us together, but not actually believing any of their words.
"But, anyways, did you guys notice Mr. Kahn? Damn, he fiiine!" Jackie squealed, extending the last word.
"I would totally tap that." Clara commented and everyone laughed.
"So that's his name." I laughed, clueless of everything, as always.
"Oh, my god, Em!" Jackie grabbed my shoulders and stared down at me as if it was something grave. "Please tell me you think he's hot."
"Yeah, of course." I shrugged, laughing at her reaction.
She then placed a hand over her chest and exhaled deeply, as if in relief. I laughed. This girl can't keep her eyes off a good piece of meat.
"Calm down Jackie, I think he might be out of stock." I joked and her eyes widened and mouth gaped.
"Don't say that! There is still hope." she said indignantly.
"Watch out girls, she likes 'em old." Clara joked, covering her mouth as if she was whispering a secret. Everyone laughed and made fun of the birthday girl.
“What about the Greek god, Jake, the jock?” I raised an eyebrow. Should she really be looking at other guys when she has a boyfriend?
“Were still dating, what about him?”
“Well, you wont be dating him for long if you keep drooling all over Mr. Kahn.”
“Em!! Dont say that! she slapped me jokingly. Jake and I will be together for ever and ever.” I sniggered, but tried to control myself. Who knows, maybe this high school sweetheart thing could work out for them.
“Anyways, the playboy surfer will always be there to console you.”
They gasped at my comment. “He is not a fuckboy!”
“He is.” Clara agreed with me for once.
“Look at him in school, hes always flirting with his students. Its gross.”
“Oh my god, Emily Roth, I cant believe you just said that!” I laughed, but Jackie seemed to be taking it more seriously.
Feeling an argument arising, Inez spoke up, interrupting everyone, "What should we do now?" she asked since we couldn't go clubbing.
Forgetting everything with her goldfish attention span, Jackie climbed the short, rock wall and started twerking and belly dancing. We dont need those stupid clubs to have fun! she laughed and someone turned on a hip-hop song.
I smirked and pushed her down the wall onto the sand as she squealed.
"Emily!!" she yelled and everyone laughed as her tight, black dress climbed up her waist.
I then threw myself next to her to help her up, but once she pulled her short dress back down, she tackled me and shoved me onto the sand. Everyone laughed and hesitatingly joined us, except for Inez who stood back timidly, Alex who always acts way older than she is, and Cora who kept glancing at her phone with a distressed look.
We all ran down closer towards the ocean. Clara whistled at couples strolling down the beach while Jackie and Jo laughed with her and danced provocatively in the cloudy moonlight. Inez cheered at her triplet dancing and tried to join them timidly as I sprinted along the wet sand, running away from Annie that had just been insulted by me. The only two boring ones were Cora and Alex who stood back, conversing and trying to help each other enjoy the party.
"Hey," I finally stopped, gasping for air, "Inez, Jo, where's Fran?" I asked.
"She's at home being a nerd!" yelled out Jo with an eye-roll.
"Yeah, she's studying for the SAT's." Inez added.
"Oh, that sucks. Someone should tell her to live while she's still young." I raised my volume, hinting my message towards Alex who just shrugged at me.
Jo, Clara, and Inez then gathered around the birthday girl as she taught them how to twerk. I laughed and filmed her with her phone, posting the videos onto her snapchat story. Jackie then noticed and charged against me like an enraged bull. I laughed out and ran for my life, knowing I was faster than her. When the opportunity arose, I faked a step and stopped running, waiting for her to surpass me and jumped onto her back. She galloped and shook her body, trying to get me off. I kept smacking her butt and entertaining the crowd like a matador. Jackie was then able to kick herself back, making the both of us fall onto the sand. I groaned with her weight on top of me and she wrestled me, making me wince.
"Okay, okay! I surrender!" I raised a white flag as Jackie sat on my stomach, jumping up and down, making me cough and laugh.
Three thick voices and a powerful laughter were then heard coming down the stairs from the bar to the beach. I looked towards them and Jackie, oblivious, kept dancing with Jo and Clara.
Mr. Damon shook his head and laughed in disapproval, "I don't know you people!" he yelled out at us amusingly.
"Yes, you do, and you're very lucky!" Jackie yelled out, dancing by herself in the moonlight.
I formed the shape of an 'L' with my fingers, placing it on my forehead, and stuck my tongue out at him. He mimicked me before turning back around. Mr. Kahn - as he is apparently called – whispered something inaudibly to him while laughing, and the jerk lowered his head as if in pain once I shot a glare at him. They then all left and we stayed at the beach until midnight, once Alex's grandparents came to pick us up.
I hugged everyone goodbye and kissed Jackie's cheek, wishing her happy birthday once again.
"See you all on Monday!" Alex and I then left as the others also parted one by one.
