Chapter 13 Callie's POV... The sun rays peaked from my window and woke me up. My eyes fluttered open and when I turned my head towards the window my dream faded. Xander wasn't besides me. There was a knock on the door. When I opened it I saw a girl about my age standing there. "Hello," I said politely and she smiled. "Hi, I'm Helena Packwood. I came here to help you get ready." My eyes widened. I don't need anyone to help me. What's going on?! "That's okay I can get ready myself," I said, still unsure about what to do so I awkwardly stood at the doorway. She smiled, "okay after you get dressed I'll do your hair." Knowing she wasn't going to back down I opened more the door and let her come in. I walked to the closet and took some jeans and a plaid shirt, how they knew my size beats me but the clothes seemed to fit me. I put on the clothes and sat down on a stool Helena had waiting for me. As she brushed my hair I looked out the window. It was getting colder and winter would be here soon. "There, done. You look beautiful." I looked at my reflection in the mirror. My hair was pulled up away from my face and curled at the ends. "I love it," I said smiling. There was a knock on the door and Helena opened it. "Hey Rose," I said getting up and hugged her. Her scent had changed and she had a certain glow. "Rose did you let Evan mark you?!" I asked looking at her neck but that still didn't explain her change in scent. She nodded, "yes, last night was wonderful." My eyes widened when I realized what she was saying. "You guys mated?" I whispered in disbelief. She nodded eagerly. I just stood there with my mouth slightly opened. "Congratulations Rose," said Helena who I forgot was here. "Thanks Helena," said Rose and I stood awkwardly. "You guys know each other?" Helena and Rose nodded. "Yes we met the minute I got here," explained Rose. "Well that's my cue to leave. See you guys later," said Helena and after she was gone Rose looked at me with mischief, "so, do you want to know what happened?" My eyes widened and I shook my head quickly, "no thank you." "It all started when he took me to his room-," "La, la, la, la, la, I can't hear you!" I said shouting over her voice and she stopped talking and kept walking. "Then we got on the bed-." I covered my ears, "my poor ears! I can't hear you la, la, la!" When we entered the dining room Evan and Xander looked at me weirdly because I was still covering my ears. I sat down next to Xander and across from Evan and Rose who were now kissing. "Oh my god. Now my eyes, my poor innocent eyes!" Rose rolled her eyes and the boys laughed. I glared at them. "So when am I going to get the chance to meet the pack?" I asked after we finished our breakfast and were heading to the movie room. "Tonight. I'll send Helena to help you pick something out," he said and that's when I noticed how close Evan and Rose were. Evan had his arm around Rose who was laughing at something he said. My eyes traveled to the distance between Xander and me, there was a big difference. "That's something I wanted to discuss with you," he turned to face me, "I can dress, brush and put on makeup by myself Xander, I'm a big girl now." He chuckled and looked at the floor. "I know but I just want you to feel comfortable." I sighed, "I understand that but I don't really need Helena's help." He nodded, "okay fine, starting tomorrow she won't be there to prepare you." I smiled, "thank you." Once in the movie room things calmed down and got less tense. I was ready to have a nice time with my mate and my two new best friends. Sadly the man from yesterday walked in, "Xander, Evan, I've found more information." The two males were instantly up and gone. "I hate it when he does that," I said looking at where Xander went, a bit hurt. I felt Rose's hand on my shoulder, "don't worry, one day that won't be a problem because you'll go with him." I sighed, yeah one day. I just hope that day isn't too far ahead. "Psst, guys it's me," whispered Helena from the door. Confused I asked, "Why are you whispering?" "Keep your voice down and follow me," she demanded and my wolf growled, "Sorry but just follow me." I stood my ground and she rolled her eyes, "do you want to find out what your mate is up to or not?" My stubbornness faded, "let's go." The three of us walked as silently as possible through many halls and doors. "Where are we going exactly?" asked Rose. "When this castle was made, the most protected and soundproofed room is the King's office," explained Helena. "So how are we going to get in?" I asked and she deviously smiled, "that room has one flaw, under the office there's a secret chamber with the purpose of keeping women and children safe. We never needed to use it so no one knows where it is." "Then how do you know?" asked Rose accusingly. "My family, or I should say my ancestors, built this castle and it's been passed down through our family because we're the highest ranked fighters. Anyway, it's the only way to find out what's going on," explained Helena unaffected by Rose's accusative tone. "Have you used it before?" I asked and she looked at me bewildered, "of course not, I would never spy on the King." Rose smirked and crossed her arms over her chest, "what made you change your mind?" Helena looked at me and gave me a faint smile, "because she's our future queen and as much as I respect our king, I don't agree with him, he's keeping her in the dark when she has a right to know what happens in this kingdom." Helena opened a small door and we stepped into a small room with old portraits and boxes. "Thank you, someone who understands me," I said and we high fived. We now stood in front of a dusty wall. "What happens now?" asked Rose. Helena moved a couple of boxes aside and between the floor and the wall was a hole. It looked dark and dusty. "Are you sure it's safe to go in there?" I asked a little frightened. Without answering, Helena stepped forward and winked at us before quickly letting herself disappear in the darkness. "Come on, it's safe in here!" yelled Helena. I looked at Rose, she looked terrified. I put a hand on her shoulder, "I'll go first," she quickly nodded and stepped back. I closed my eyes and let myself fall. For a second I lost touch with the ground before landing on my right shoulder. Helena helped me up. "Thanks for the warning," I grunted. "Anytime," she said. When my eyesight adjusted to the darkness I saw Helena looking up at the hole that was letting bright light in. "Come one Rose, you'll be fine it's just like diving," encouraged Helena. "That's not helping you know, I don't know how to swim," said Rose. "I'll teach you someday, now let yourself drop." We heard tiny rocks falling and a terrified scream. We caught Rose in time so she wouldn't hit the ground. Even in our arms she kept screaming. "Jeez girl, you have a good set of lungs there," said Helena trying to regain her hearing. "I know, I think you left me deaf," I joked but I could also feel a slight buzz ringing in my ears. "Sorry," apologized Rose sheepishly. "You lead us now Helena," said Rose. Helena hesitated and looked at the ground, "yeah well this is another reason why I haven't spied on our King, I don't know my way around here in these tunnels." "Tunnels?!" yelled Rose and I. "Oh I didn't mention they were tunnels?" she asked innocently. I gritted my teeth, "you forgot that small detail." With the faint glow of outside I saw her blush, "not to worry. We have you two and your mates are in that office. I'm guessing Rose can find her mate easier than you Callie because she's mated. So, Rose, now you'll lead the way sniffing them out." Rose stood agape, "are you serious?" Helena nodded with a smug smirk on her face. "Yes doggie, now fetch," she joked and I couldn't help it, I laughed. "I'm a wolf not a dog," murmured Rose under her breath leading the way. Helena and I chuckled. I liked this girl, she's outgoing and fearless. Rose turned a sharp corner. "I think she's found her treat," joked Helena. I laughed and Rose turned and gave us the evil eye, "I'll get my revenge on you two if it's the last thing I do." Helena smirked, "I'll like to see you try." And I said, "Yeah right." We walked further into the darkness until light appeared ahead and voices followed. "What have you found out now Joseph?" I heard Evan's voice ask. We looked through the tiny holes above us. Xander was sitting in his desk looking formal. Evan was sitting on a chair across from him and so was the other guy who I now knew his name was Joseph. "This morning we sent a tracker and a fighter out on a mission, to collect information from the Blood Moon Pack." "What?!" yelled Xander and Evan simultaneously, Joseph cowered under their gaze. "Why wasn't I informed about this?" asked Xander. "And how could you risk those wolves' lives?" demanded Evan. "They volunteered. They came to me early this morning asking for permission to spy on the Blood Moon Pack. Now we have all the proof we needed," Joseph defended. Xander nodded, "I understand that and I appreciate the braveness of those wolves but next time I would like to be informed." Joseph nodded in agreement. "What happened to those wolves?" asked Evan, still a little mad. "They're perfectly fine, no one saw them. Their names are Jessica Wood, head tracker, and Mike Packwood, head fighter." I turned to Helena, "he's my brother." "Why didn't you tell us about this? Did you know?" accused Rose. Helena shook her head, "he didn't tell me anything I didn't even know he left." I nodded and turned back to the conversation. "Thank you Joseph, you are dismissed," said Xander and Joseph got up stiffly and walked out. "What are you thinking?" asked Evan. Xander sighed, "I guess I had this coming. I don't know what we'll do. When we attacked their pack, their wolves are heavily trained and have learnt the art of killing." Evan nodded, "our wolves are also fairly well trained." "But we're going against our biggest threat, we have to be ready and 'fairly well' won't cut it," said Xander raising his voice which made Rose and Helena flinch. "How about starting tomorrow we start training," suggested Evan and Xander nodded in agreement, "sounds good. I'll inform the pack tonight." There was a silence between them. Xander kept twirling his pen and when I got closer he tensed. Afraid that he had sensed me I backed away quickly. "What about Callie?" asked Evan. Xander looked up, "what about her?" "Quit the innocent act, I've seen you push her away," Xander tensed a little more, "you have to get this through you thick skull, she's not Annabelle." Xander glared at him, "what are you trying to say?" Evan glared back, "I have a feeling that Annabelle had a mate back in France and to get away from him she moved here, strange really because then you'll ask yourself, where does that leave me? I'll tell you where, she probably used that wolf toxin on you, the one that alters your wolf. At first I didn't suspect anything until she died and then you met Callie, I don't believe it's a coincidence." Xander growled, "Believe what you want Evan she was everything to me and even with all that's happened, I can't forget her!" I flinched and realized I had tears streaming down my face. I ran far from there not caring where I ended up in. I could hear steps behind me. I was faster and with each second they became more distant. I stopped and fell to my knees on the ground. I hugged my body sobbing and crying. My wolf howled and clawed to get out and run away from here. This couldn't be happening, not again...
