Chapter 1
Chapter 1
“Okay Anna! You can do this. Just take a deep breath and knock on the damn door.” Anna, a young lady in her twenties said to herself as she straightened up her slender figures which complimented her tall and curvaceous legs. She gave a light knock on the door and paused for a response.
“Come in!”, a reply came from inside.
Anna took another deep breath and walked inside her manager's office.
“There!”, the lady said to Anna without even lifting an eye from the documents she was working on.
Anna quietly picked up the brown envelope that laid on the desk. She needed no magician to tell her what the content of the envelope was all about.
“I'm so sorry ma'am. I just didn't know that… “, Anna tried to explain but was abruptly cut short by her boss.
“I don't want to hear it, Anna. Kindly clear up your desk and don't forget to submit all the documents in your possession to the security on your way out. “
“Ye... Yes ma'am! “, she replied with her face buried to the ground. She knew that her regular coming late to work was not the only reason she got fired. Two days ago, she had mistakenly published an article which contained information about the government’s illegal deals with drug lords. Although everybody knew of the fishy deals that went on I'm the city, it still caused a lot of trouble for the company as they had to pay for several damages.
“Aiish! So much for being Just. ”, Anna exclaimed in frustration. She walked out of the office in shame. There was a sudden tension in the air as other workers who saw her frowned at her act.
She cowered in shame as she silently walked over to her desk. Her things were already packed carefully inside a box—ready to be taken. Just as she got out of the building with her box in both hands, her phone rang in her pockets.
“Hello! This is Ashwood’s General Hospital. I'd like to speak with Mrs. Anna Lester “
“Miss Anna Lester! Emphasis on the Miss!. How may I help you? “ Anna replied with a raised brow.
“I'm so sorry Miss Lester but your grandma was reported dead in her apartment an hour ago. I'd like you to please take a few moments to proc… “, the call went on but Anna wasn't listening anymore.
Her palms quivered with fear as the phone and box fell off her hands. She paused for a second as she took in deep breaths and tried to process things.
After the death of her parents, her grandma had always been the only relative she knew. With her grandma gone, she had absolutely nobody else to call family.
Anna looked around the pedestrian lane she was on. Despite the shock the news brought to her, she knew better not to cause a scene in public.
She gently reached down to the now scattered box on the ground. Desperately, she blinked off the tears that welled up in her eyes and packed up her stuff and went straight home.
When she reached out to the door which led into her apartment, she realized that it was unlocked. But she was too broken to care. She stormed into her apartment and crashed on the couch as the tears she was holding back finally bursted out like a broken dam, running down her red cheeks as she cried out the pain she felt.
Anna was so taken away by her emotions that she didn't realize the stranger that stood behind the couch with a gun in his hand. But before she could react to the strange figure, a gun was pressed against her neck.
“Shhh! Take it nice and easy Anna! Nobody's gonna get hurt if you stay calm. Okay? “, the strange guy said.
“Kyle? Anna whispered.
“Yes, that's right. “ Kyle replied. He pulled back his gun and straightened his black jacket as he walked over to Anna who sat on the couch.
“What the f**k are you doing in here? “ Anna questioned as she tried to hide her tears.
“Ohh! I see that I picked the wrong time to visit. “ he replied with a wicked grin that stretched the tattoos on his neck. “Who pissed you off baby girl? “
“Get the hell out of my house! “, Anna yelled out in anger. The last thing she needed at the moment was a pestering Mafia leader who was out to bug her life.
Kyle looked at Anna as the smile he had slowly turned into a frown. “ Look here Anna, I'm not used to being yelled at so don't you f*****g toy with me. I'll let this slide for some good reasons but the next time you yell at me ever again, I'll remind you of how sharp my blades are. ”
Anna stood up to look him squarely in the eyes “I just lost the only person I had in this world. So if you really love me as you claim, you'd get your Mafia ass off my property and out of my life. ”, she said to his face.
Kyle tilted his head as he licked his lips. He took a step back and paused for a second before slapping Anna on the face—sending her crashing on the couch. He pounced on her as she struggled to shield herself with her hands.
“Hold still baby girl. Stay the f**k still! . “ Kyle barked in anger which made Anna calm. “ You see? You're wrong baby girl. You're not alone, You've got me right here. In fact, I've got a surprise for you. “
“What the f**k are you talking about? What surprise? “, Anna asked.
“You'll see”. Kyle snapped his finger and two huge guys with tattoos and a lollipop in their mouths emerged from her room. The new of them had a brown file in his hand which he obediently handed over to Kyle.
“You see baby girl?, I love you so much. And I thought about it for a long time. The only way I can have you to myself is for you to legally marry me”, he said with a smile.
“Are you out of your goddamn mind?. The last thing I'll do is to marry a demon like you”, Anna hissed at him.
“Exactly! If that's the last thing you're going to do then I might as well make it happen “, Kyle threatened as he punched Anna hard on the face.
Anna fell to the couch as her vision became blurry. She could taste her own blood oozing out of her mouth but she was too knocked out to defend herself. She desperately tried to hear what they were saying but the only thing she could hear was Kyle talking about a contract marriage.
She felt a pen slide into her hand and another yell came from Kyle but she couldn't understand a word he was saying.
“Sign here you motherfucker! “, Kyle yelled out in frustration as another punch landed on Anna. She felt her hands on a paper as she unconsciously signed on a document she couldn't even see, just to avoid being punched the third time.
The last thing she could remember before blacking out was Kyle lifting her up from the couch and taking her to her room. As soon as she fell on the bed, she blacked out.
