CHAPTER 32
POLICE INVESTIGATION
Carlos saw the police arrive, but waited for them to ring the doorbell before opening the door. He looked again at Blanca, his heart breaking at her silent pain.
Two uniformed policemen stood on his step. The short one had smiling eyes. “Hello, I’m Officer Castro.” He gestured towards his partner, who was of average height and wore a stern expression. “This is Officer Souza. You reported a crime?”
Carlos nodded. “Yes, I’m Carlos Silva. Please come in.” They followed Carlos into the living room. “This is Blanca Castellano.”
Officer Castro took out a notepad while Officer Souza sat beside him. “Can you tell us exactly what happened.” Blanca explained the incident with a flat tone while the officer took notes, making occasional eye contact.
