THE RETURN
The following Monday, Blanca arrived at the office, expecting to find Isabela at her desk.
It was empty. She might be running late. A part of her doubted it, as Isabela would not be late without notifying her. Worse, she hadn’t heard anything from Isabela over the weekend. She and Carlos had told Officers Souza and Castro that Isabela may be missing, and the police promised to investigate, but so far, she hadn’t heard anything.
Her parents were still unwilling to tell her the truth. She would have to find other ways to get information. But what if it got too dangerous to keep searching? What if her attacker was somehow connected to her past? She wondered if she knew things in the deep recesses of her mind, which she couldn’t remember.
