Chapter 3

Elliot arrived in my hospital room 10 minutes later. The sight of him standing there caught me off guard, and I blurted out, "You got here fast." Elliot gave a cold snort. "Claire is next door. After I got your message, I went downstairs to the print shop, printed the divorce agreement, and came over." So Claire's room was right next door. No wonder he had come so quickly. But if he had been right next door, why hadn't he spared even a moment to visit me? It seemed I truly meant nothing to him. That truth still hurt. Thankfully, I was about to divorce him. After this, I would never feel sad over him again. With that, Elliot tossed the divorce papers onto my lap. His voice was icy. "Sign it." Then he looked at me in disgust. "Vanessa Blake, don't tell me this is another one of your tricks just so you can see me." I shook my head and gave a self-mocking smile. "It won't be." 'Never again.' I lowered my head and ignored the loathing on Elliot's face. I began reading the divorce papers carefully. He was a CEO now, and he was certainly generous with the settlement. Elliot had given me more than enough in assets. Aside from the stocks and real estate, the string of zeros alone was enough for me to live comfortably for the rest of my life. My own family was wealthy too, but who would complain about having more money? If there was no love, having a lot of money wasn't bad either. I picked up the pen and signed my name on the final line. When Elliot saw me write my name, he froze. He probably hadn't expected me to really agree to the divorce this time. His brow furrowed. "You... really signed it?" His question made my heart ache again. In the past, every time we argued and Elliot brought me divorce papers, I would tear them apart like a madwoman. Thinking about it now, I must have looked awful. Who would have thought the most unruly Blake heiress in Westbridge could be so pathetic in her own marriage? But from now on, I would never be like that again. I nodded. "Yes. I have thought it through. Instead of torturing each other, we should let each other go." After signing, I lay back down on the hospital bed. My injuries were serious. I couldn't sit up for long. Elliot, however, didn't take the signed divorce papers and leave. He stood beside the bed, holding the papers and staring blankly at it. It was as if he still couldn't believe I had signed it so easily. I gave him a puzzled look. "Why are you still here?" He paused. I pointed toward the door and reminded him, almost kindly, "Claire is worried about you. She came to pick you up." Elliot looked up and saw Claire standing there in a hospital gown. But when he saw Claire, he didn't look as happy as I had imagined. He stood there, face cold, and lowered his head as if he still wanted to say something to me. Then Claire spoke in an aggrieved voice. "Elliot, I just wanted to see whether Vanessa needed any help. I was afraid you couldn't handle this alone. Vanessa isn't upset again, is she?" I curled my lip. "I don't need your help. The best thing you can do for me is stay out of my sight." The moment Elliot heard me speak that way to the woman he loved, he snapped. "Vanessa Blake, Claire came to see you out of kindness. How can you be so cruel? Apologize to her right now." 'Apologize? Of course. Another apology.' In the past, whenever Claire and I had a conflict, Elliot always made me apologize to her. But what had I done that required an apology? Pain and resentment surged in my chest, but I forced them down again. I told myself this would be the last time. After this, I would never give Elliot and Claire another chance to hurt me. I looked up at Elliot with perfect seriousness. "If I apologize, will you make her leave?" Elliot froze. "You..." "Fine. As long as you make her leave, I will apologize." I sat up and looked at Claire. "Claire Morgan, I'm sorry. I was blind and didn't know my place. I forced myself between you and Elliot. I sincerely apologize. From now on, I will never be reckless enough to provoke you again or make trouble for either of you. Please leave my room now." Then I looked at Elliot. His face had gone dark. "I apologized. Now take her and get out."
