Steven sat down on the ground. They had been walking for almost 2 days now. Something growled in his belly. It was his stomach. The girl giggled. He smiled. He had not eaten a good meal for as long as he could remember. She put her hand in her little knapsack and took out a knife.
'Great' Steven thought 'This is how I die'. She gestured with the knife looking behind him.
He turned around. There was a rabbit near a bush or something that looked like one. Its ears were shorter than the rabbits he was used to and it had a longer tail. She ran towards it and picked it up. She held it by the neck. Steven stared in fascination as she slit its throat. She smiled victoriously.
She gave it to him to hold and started preparing a clearing so she could start a fire. She seemed to be struggling. Steven remembered he had a lighter in his bag and he fumbled around in his bag till he found it. He pulled it out and lit it. This time she stared in fascination.
'Oii' she exclaimed excitedly. Steven smiled. He lit a branch and used it to build the fire. She then skinned the rabbit and put a branch through it. Steven took it from her and started roasting it on the fire. After it was done they ate it and he was surprised at how amazing it tasted without any seasoning whatsoever.
Steven dug around in his bag. 'Ahh yess!!' he exclaimed as he took out a bottle half filled with water. He offered it to her first and she drank. 'Water' he said pointing at the bottle. 'Water' she repeated mimicking him. They smiled.
It was getting dark and Steven felt sleep overtake him. He was very tired. He looked over at her and gestured that he wanted to sleep. She yawned and nodded in agreement.
They found a cozy enough spot under a low hanging tree and passed out.
Next morning Steven was woken up by the sound of a very loud bird. Her arm was lying on his tummy. She was still asleep. 'Damn' he thought 'She's pretty'. He tried to move her hand very slowly and get up by no awakening her but that was pretty pointless. She opened her eyes just as he took her hand. They looked into each other's eyes. Steven immediately let go of her hand and scratched his head in embarrassment. She smiled and looked away. He walked away and looked around. They had to get going.
He turned to look at her and gestured that they had to leave. She nodded in agreement.
They walked for a good while after which Steven noticed something shining. 'Water' the girl exclaimed excitedly. It was a river. They hurried towards it and hydrated themselves. Steven filled his bottle.
Having drunk water he was a little more optimistic about the situation. They then walked alongside the river and crossed it at the point where it was narrower and shallow. The other side of the river was beautiful. There were many fruit trees and some creatures walking about. The creatures seemed friendly. The girl picked one up that looked like a modified dog with long ears. It started vigorously licking her. Steven smiled.
' This is it' he thought 'This is where I will set up camp'. He looked at her and said 'Good' with a thumbs-up. She smiled and nodded.
