CHAPTER 7: SELFISH

Orders kept pouring in, Miles had to work twice as hard along side with Adrian and Emily. He noticed as the rush began to reduce as the time clocked to 12 p.m. it felt like a designated time was given for coming to the cafe. " That was exhausting!" Adrian turned to Miles who was looked like he had just ran a Matron race. " I can begin to explain how that was, I haven't worked this hard in my life" he said laughing. " Well you better get used to it because this happens everyday and on festive season it gets worse than you've seen today" Adrian added before he started taking off his apron. " Are you leaving?" Miles asked confused. " Yes! I'm done with my shift" he said as an invisible frown appeared on his face, Adrian looked like he didn't want to leave. " This early?" " Yep. I'm only allowed to go outside the house within these hours. Anything beyond that results into an uncomfortable circumstances" he tried explaining to his best knowledge " Why? is there anything you need to be doing at home that requires you closing this early?" He was still confused, ever since the moment Adrian walked in through the cafe door he was all happy and excited but now that he was leaving he had a massive frown, like a cloud of sadness was hovering around his head. " Its nothing really serious but the cafe closes by 2pm and then reopens by 6pm which has a different shift and different people entirely, so it's makes no difference and besides Emily is still going to be here, you're definitely not going to be alone, if that's what you are afraid of" he said with a smile that was forced. '" I'll see you tomorrow my ride will be here any minute from now" Adrian hung his apron on his shoulder as he walked off to go change into his clothes. Miles was still trying to figure out what the sudden mood change from Adrian was for. " Where is Adrian?" Emily asked as she walked in searching through the cafe in the view of her eyes. " He went to get change, he said he was going home" " He remembered today, I was about to remind him about that" " Emily" he called out trying to suppress his curiosity " Yes, do you want to ask me about anything?" " It's really not a question. I just wanted to know, why does he leave this early" he said in a soft whisper " I can't really answer that question, all I know is he comes by 8 a.m. and leaves by 12 p.m." she answered, Miles nodded before walking off ending the conversation not wanting to drag the topic any further. he walk to a table that wasn't cleared yet and started removing whatever leftovers were on it. " Good afternoon" he could hear the voice of a girl who greeted Emily. " I want the special" the same voice echoed " Alright I'll be back, have a seat and please be patient" Emily spoke before walking off to the back. Miles noticed that each customer who ordered the special always left with the coffee cup and the price was ridiculously high. it was an order in the menu 'the special' it wasn't attached to any specific ingredients which was used to make it, he was a little bit more curious to know what was inside the coffee to increase the price to such an extent. But then again it was his first day working here. He wouldn't get any answers right now until he spent a little more time here, he carefully walked back towards Emily with the items in his hand. A fancy car pulled up as the girl left the cafe, it was parked outside just in front of at the cafe. Almost immediately Adrian was out with a change of clothes. " I was just about to call you" " Well, I'm here. I'll see you guys tomorrow" he said with a smile. " Miles it was nice meeting you and who knows maybe one of these days we could grab dinner together" he said in a rather sad tune " Sure!" " Emes I'll see you" he added before walking up towards his ride " That's his car?" Miles was forced to asked. it was quite an expensive car and he could tell that any average person wouldn’t be able to afford it. " Yes, I think he's one of those rich kids whose parents want him to have a sense of responsibility" she said before carrying out with whatever she was doing. Soon it was time to go home, Miles grabbed his things and was ready to head home. " I'll see you tomorrow" Emily smiled. He got out of the cafe and into the busy road, he had his back bag hanging on his shoulder as he plugged in his earphones putting on his favorite song before walking down the street. He walked into a grocery store that was beside the cafe to get his mum's favorite snack. It was the first time she wouldn't be out with her friends but indoors all day. He got home with a smile and reached for door but before he could open the door, it swung open revealing his relieved mother " My baby!" she cried as she set her eyes on her son, " Mum, isn't too much, I'm fine. would you calm down" " I know you are fine, I just missed my little man. How was work at the cafe?" " It was good just a little bit stressful but it's nothing I can’t get use to" " Wow that's really amazing" " The cafe is better than I thought" he said as they walked in together still thinking on how he could get Kanaan to notice him. " Where is Dad?" he asked as he observed the room and found no sign of him, " That's a story for another day" " Mum would you tell me what happened, where is he?" Miles asked " If you must know, he is in his room, he has been in his room all day refusing to eat or drink anything. He just decided to throw a tantrum, he will be fine" she said Miles dropped the grocery bag on the kitchen slab and took in a deep breath. " I'll go see him, I also got you something while I was coming back from work" he said as he watched his mum smile as she searched through the bag. " It's nothing much, I wish I could get more" he added " This is just alright, it's the thought that counts, thank you for even remembering to get me something while coming back" " Mum, I love you but for now we need to get your precious husband to eat, we can’t afford him falling ill" he said. His mum couldn’t care less of what happened to her husband, living with him for the past 26 years of her life did not just mean nothing, she knew her husband's character very well. His reason for actually throwing a tantrum was because Miles did not agree to his stupid arrangement, he was really ready to sell their only child and she knew this quite well. " Dad!" Miles called out as he knocked on the door but there wasn't any response from inside, he already had the spare keys in his hand which he used to open the door himself. " What do you want?" his father's voice could be heard as they stepped into the room " Mum said you haven't eaten all day, what should I get you" he asked " Nothing" his father's voice rang, he was lying down with his back facing Miles " Are you sure you don't want anything?" " No, you two should leave me alone" " If you want to die, how about you just go back to the people you own money, so your death wouldn't be for no reason" his mother voiced " Mum!!" " What did I do wrong?" " Stop it!" Miles said " No let her speak, she's right this is my fault. it all starts with me and I'm the only one who should suffer, I shouldn't have dragged you both into this mess" his dad spoke in a rather depressed tone. " We are a family and family sticks together till the end, I'm not going to give up, we can survive this together" he encouraged. His mother was not buying any of her husband's drama she knew he loved himself very well, a little too much - a known fact that he could never starve himself to death " Let's go eat then, you need all the strength you can get" Miles tried convincing him one more time " I don't want to eat anything, how can I eat when my family is buried deep in debt and we are running from a monster who wants to actually kill us" his father spoke finally turning from the wall looking straight at Miles " Dad, I promise you nothing is going to happen to us. I'll manage" " I'm sorry for not being a good father" he said as he touched Miles's hand with tears rolling down his cheeks " You are not a bad father, you just did not know how to manage your money that was the only problem, you are an amazing father" his mother couldn't help but roll her eyes watching both men before her display such childish drama. " Let's go and eat something, we can't have you fallen sick right now we can't afford to take you to the hospital" he said with a smile finally pulling his father up.
