CHAPTER 30
Special agent Katie Monahan left Miami on a Delta flight to Norfolk, Virginia. Upon arriving, she took a taxi to the naval base, where Lieutenant Commander Dorothy Howard is under guard. A sergeant led her into a room with a well-polished wooden conference table and four navy blue upholstered swivel chairs. Oil paintings of recent base admirals looked down from the light gray walls.
She stood next to the table, opened her briefcase, and removed a notepad and a few papers. Then Lieutenant Commander Dorothy Howard, escorted by two military police, entered the room. She looked tired and frazzled. Katie knew she’d been held in detention and interrogated by her superiors.
The two women sat down and silently contemplated one another.
