“That’s true,” Gran said. “He’ll appreciate a car and take better care of it if he feels that he’s earned it.” The next evening at the dinner table, Steve provided his own solution to the subject of transportation when he said, “Uncle Philip?” “Yes.” “I’ll be sixteen soon, and I want to get my driver’s license.” “No problem.” “I’ve been thinking about a way to earn money so I can buy a used car.” “Have you?” Philip said. “Yes. I’d like to go after some lawn care business in the neighborhood. You know, houses that are in bicycle range.” “You don’t have a bicycle,” Philip said. “I have one back in Louisiana. Mom’s coming to Atlanta on the weekend after my birthday. She can bring it with her.” “That works for me,” Philip said. “Do you plan to go around knocking on doors?” I said.
