MOMENTARILY TAKEN ABACK, I sat for a moment until I finally found my voice and said, “Complications? What complications?”
“I don’t pretend to understand the medical details,” Charles said. “All I know is that a seemingly normal pregnancy has turned into one that’s high risk. They’re going to keep us posted. By the way, everything is going well with the other pregnancy.”
Charles said good-bye to Gran and me and left the room. I walked him to the door, kissed him, and returned to the breakfast table.
When I was seated, Gran said, “Is he all right?”
“You know our boy as well as I do. If he wasn’t, neither of us would know about it, at least not until he wants us to.”
