Heartache
Can the heart mend itself back together after heart break? When you find your destined mate is there any more room for love once he’s gone? Love can be a wonderful and terrifying thing. When you have it, you feel on top of the world. When it’s gone it’s like a hole has been punched through your heart a darkness consuming you from the inside out. You feel hollow and incomplete. So, can the heart really mend itself back together after heart break? “Lucien has requested an audience with you regarding the other royals.” Tristan said looking down at his clip board. “Do I have to?” Lilith asked looking over at him a frown on her face. It had been six months since the death of her father Leonidas. She was now the Queen; she had taken down the monster freeing everyone from his grasp. She had hoped when she killed him that she would find some sort of peace, but she didn’t. An ache throbbed in her chest ripping the gaping hole where her heart used to be, the pain grew worse every day. Why did he have to die? Alexander’s death still haunted her hanging over her like a dark cloud, reminding her of her failure. She failed him. Lilith being a born hybrid should have been strong enough or fast enough to save Alexander, but she wasn’t. She had failed to save him. The love she used to feel was now gone leaving her an empty shell of the woman she used to be. In front of the others, she tried to put on a brave face, pretending that everything was alright. On the outside she smiled and pretended to be happy while on the inside she slowly died. Lilith knew she needed to take the time to grieve for Alexander but allowing herself to do that would mean finally saying goodbye to the man she loved. She wasn’t ready to say goodbye. She wasn’t ready to try to put the pieces of her heart back together. Instead, she avoided it, pushed it down ignoring her need to let it all out. The more she pushed it down the number she felt. “Lilith?” Tristan said snapping Lilith from her thoughts. “Sorry, what did you say?” Lilith said looking at Tristan who was now staring at her with a sad look on his face. Tristan like the others kept a close eye on Lilith. Everyone walking around on eggshells as if they were expecting her to lose it at any moment. “Lucien will be here in the next few weeks or sooner. He wants to discuss how we will move forward from here. Like some of the others he is not so willing to go back to the way things where when humans sat on top.” “Well, it’s a good thing he doesn’t have a say now does it.” Lilith grimaced. Lilith wasn’t going to let things stay the way they had under her father’s rule. It was time to step back into the shadows where her and her kind belonged. The humans could build their lives back and slowly the world could go back to the way it used to be. Lilith would keep the monsters in the dark where they belonged allowing the humans to live in peace in the light where they belonged. “That it is.” Tristan tapped his finger on the clip board nodding his head. “Is that everything for today?” Lilith was done, she had been on the go all day. She needed to unwind and get away from it all. “That is, it for now.” Tristan said. “Lilith.” Tristan paused biting his bottom lip a look on his face that showed the internal battle he was having with himself. She knew that look all too well. It was the look they all gave her, the look of sorrow and pity. Lilith hated that look, she knew that they cared and just wanted her to be happy, but the looks they now gave her made her want to scream and lash out. “I am okay Tristan.” Lilith could see her words did not convince him at all, but instead of arguing with her he nodded before turning on his heels and walking out of the throne room. Watching him exit out of the room Lilith let out a breath she hadn’t even realized she had been holding. She wanted to be left alone, and yet couldn’t stand being alone. Lilith couldn’t stand the looks of pity and sadness from the others, but once she was completely alone, she was left with all her thoughts of him. The moment she was alone the wheels would begin turning. The battle would play over and over in her head. She would think of what she could have done differently to save him. The more those thoughts consumed her the more she could feel the pain slowly seeping back in. “Selene?” Lilith whispered in her head. For three months after the death of Alexander all Selene would do is whine in the back of her head. The pain of the loss of their mate consuming them. “Yes Lilith?” Selene’s voice sang in her head, her wolf moving from the shadows of her mind. “Can we go for a run?” “Of course.” Selene said moving to the front of her mind. Lilith snuck out of the castle before anyone could notice she was gone. Sprinting deep into the surrounding forest until she was a good distance from the castle. Not wasting anytime, she began stripping off her clothes until she stood naked. Closing her eyes, she took in a deep breath before slowly letting it out relaxing her body. “Selene?” Lilith whispered a wave now moving through her body. The change had begun, bones began breaking and rearranging. Lilith dropped to the ground letting the waves of transformation take hold until she was no longer there but a massive white wolf. “Take the wheel.” Lilith said letting Selene take control. Lilith didn’t want to think anymore she just wanted to escape into the darkness of her mind and let Selene take control. She also knew Selene was itching to take control and go a run, she needed to feel free even for only a moment. “Thank you.” Selene said before bolting further into the forest running free. They ran for hours not letting up until Selene slowly came to a stop by a beautiful lake. Walking over the wolf sat down looking out at the water before lifting its head up at the sky to see a full moon. Looking back down the wolf stared at its reflection in the water. Memories of the first time they had spoken after Lilith had shifted for the first time stirred in the back of her mind. “My heart hurts so much.” Lilith said to Selene. A small tear spilled from the wolfs eyes disappearing in her fur. “We lost our mate, but that does not mean we won’t be blessed with another.” Selene said back, the wolf looking down at her reflection again. Staring the reflection in the water for what felt like forever the wolf suddenly shot it’s head up to the moon before letting out a thunderous howl. Lilith stepped forward from the darkness of their mind, both joined as one as the wolf howled again. Each howl getting louder and louder. Power radiated off the wolf, it’s howling shaking the ground around it. She could no longer hold it back. All the pain she had been supressing, the aching in her heart for the loss of her mate let out in that moment. Mic's POV Mic was headed to the throne room when a loud howl shook the ground around him. The few wolves that now lived with them all dropped to their knees clutching their chests. Confused Mic looked around trying to figure out what was happening when another howl shook and this time everyone was knocked to their knees. Dropping to his knees clutching his chest Mic knew then what was happening and who was causing it. Looking around everyone was dropped to the floor looks of confusion and pain written all over their faces. Closing his eyes taking in a deep breath it was then a faint call rang in his mind. He could hear her cries, feel her pain, she was out there all alone consumed by the loss of her mate. He needed to find her, he needed to find a way to take her pain away. “Lilith.” He said slowly trying to stand back up. An invisible force kept pushing him back down trying to keep him on his knees, but he kept trying to get back up. It didn’t matter the pain it caused him to try to stand he needed to go to her. He needed to find Lilith and try to sooth her pain. Lilith's POV Shifting back Lilith dropped to her knee’s tears running down her cheeks. Sitting back, she lifted her head to the moon yelling loudly in anger. The more she yelled the more tears spilled down her cheeks. “Why him?” She shouted still looking at the sky. Lilith didn’t really know who she was yelling at, but in that moment, it felt right as she yelled at the sky and moon. “Why did you have to take him from me?” Moving forward she collapse onto the ground. Her body shook sob after sob letting all her pain out with each tear. The Flood gates opened letting her feel it all. She had pushed the loss of Alexander deep down avoiding it at all costs. Going on this run in her wolf form and ending up by this beautiful lake only reminded her of where Alexander and she had first met so long ago. How simple things had been back then. What she wouldn’t give to go back in time to be with him even for just a moment. A pair of hands slowly moved around her body making her jump in surprise. Mic's POV “It’s just me,” Mic whispered scooping her up and into his arms. “It’s okay I am here Lil.” Mic gently pressed his lips on the top of her head pressing her closer to this chest. Seeing her like this broke his heart. If Mic could go back, he would have traded places with Alexander in a heartbeat. He would gladly have died so Lilith could still be with Alexander, and so she could be happy. “Will this pain ever stop?” Lilith asked between sniffles. “Time eventually heals all and we have eternity. You will never forget him, but as time goes on it will hurt less and less.” Mic knew this wasn’t really want she wanted to hear, but it was the truth, and she needed the truth now more than ever. “I hope so.” Lilith whispered into his chest moving to lean her head on his shoulder. Lilith's POV Letting herself feel all her pain and grief had drained her, sleep was now calling, her eyes becoming heavy with each blink. She could hear Selene purring in her head as she slowly retreated to the back of her mind. Lilith couldn’t help but think it odd that Selene started to purr when Mic had picked her up, but she was too tired to question her wolf she needed to sleep. “Sleep. I will keep you safe.” Mic Kissed her head again. “Mic?” Lilith clung to his shirt. “Yes.” Mic said glancing from the side at her. “Please stay with me. I don’t want to be alone.” Lilith buried her face into the crook of his neck avoiding his gaze waiting for his answer. “I won’t ever leave you alone Lil. Now sleep, you are tired and need your rest I will still be here when you wake.” Mic kissed her head again. Nodding her head her eyes slowly beginning to close. Lilith’s breathing becoming shallower, her heart slowing to a nice rhythm as she drifted off to dreamland. Mic's POV “Sleep my love. My sweet Lil.” Mic whispered; he could feel she was fast asleep in his arms. Holding her tight he began to slowly walk back to the castle his movements gently swaying her deeper to sleep her body completely relaxing in his arms. He would stay by her side forever even if it was no longer as a lover, but only as a friend. He would be her protector; she would get her happy ending even if it meant ending his own life. She was his destined mate; he didn’t know how it was possible, but he could feel it. He would find a way to mend her broken heart. To bring her back to the light, and to make her happy again. Vivian's POV Sneaking into the dark mansion Vivian snickered to herself at how easy it was for her to sneak onto the property and into the mansion. Lilith had thought she was dead which made it the perfect time to slip away. Start a new somewhere else, maybe Europe. Vivian had woken during the fight to see Lilith’s mutt of a mate be killed, and then to see Lilith kill Leonidas. She was never very close to Leonidas, but he was still her brother. Vivian knew she couldn’t defeat Lilith by herself, she would need to find someone strong enough. For now, though she needed to escape and hide until the time was right to strike back. Looking around the mansion she couldn’t help but snicker again at how easy it had been for her to sneak in. No one had even noticed her sneaking onto the land or even into the mansion. It wasn’t completely surprising to her she was only dealing with those filthy mutts, and they were still a small pack. Her plans to become the next Queen had failed, she was now on the run and knew that Vlad had many items that would fetch a pretty penny in his private study. “Like stealing candy from a baby.” Vivian whispered to herself a wicked smile spread across her face. Entering the office everything looked the same not one thing out of place from the last time she had been here. Her eyes revealed nothing out of the ordinary, but her gut screamed for her to run. The faint smell of dirt and blood clung to the air suffocating her as she walked deeper into the office. Shaking the feeling of doom Vivian quickly made her way to the bookcase to find the hinge that opened the secret door to his study. She just needed to find the hinge get what she needed and get far away from this place and from Lilith. Taking a deep breath to try to calm her nerves she rolled her shoulders back before focusing back on the mission at hand, find Vlad’s hidden treasure so she could get far away and start anew. Something wasn’t right here and yet she kept “Sunflower.” A deep voice growled freezing Vivian in her tracks. “Vlad?” Vivian asked turning around to see a massive shadow on the other side of the dark room. “In the flesh.” The shadowy figure moved quickly appearing right in front of her. Looking up in shock Vivian was at a loss for words looking up to see Vlad towering over her. She had killed him; how could he be standing before her? She knew he was strong, but there was no way he could have survived what she had done. “H…How?” Vivian stuttered. “Lilith,” Vlad said a grin slowly curving his lips. “You have been a very bad girl Sunflower.” Vlad said moving forward closing the small space between them. Vivian backed up hitting her back into the library. Pushing her hand out she tried to keep him from moving closer to her, but he was stronger than her. “Please Vlad I…” “Shhhh. No more talking I need to see what has happened.” Vlad said pressing his finger to her lips to stop her from talking. Looking up at him Vivian’s brows furrowed in confusion, but before she could question him, he lunged at her pinning her to the library. Grabbing her chin, he forced her head to the side. “Goodbye sunflower.” “No. No. Please!” Vivian shouted trying to stop him, but it was no use. Vlad's POV Biting down on her neck his fangs tearing into her skin causing Vivian to scream in horror. Vlad pressed her harder to the bookcase with his massive frame drinking in one big gulp after another. Closing his eyes, he could feel the memories beginning to slowly pool into his veins. He could see Lilith fight Vivian after what she had done. The attack on Leonidas, the death of Alexander, and Lilith killing Leonidas. She had done it. She killed him. Vlad had seen what he needed to, he could stop drinking, but there was no way he was letting Vivian live after what she had done. Growling he bit down harder taking in bigger gulps until there was no more blood left in her veins, he had drained her dry. Ripping his fangs from her flesh Vlad looked down at the woman he had once felt warmth toward, that could have been his chosen mate to spend eternity with. Now he could see her for what she truly was, a snake. Not wasting anymore time he ripped her head from her body. Carrying her body over his shoulder he held her head by her hair moving through the mansion. It took him mere seconds before he was outside dropping her body to the ground and tossing her head on top of it. Pulling out a pack of matches from he lit a match. Flicking the match at the body it went up in flames. Vlad stood there like a statue watching Vivian’s body burn to ash never to hurt another. Lilith was still at the castle, and that is where Vlad was now headed. Neither of them with their destined mate, Vlad knew now that fate had put her in his path to be his chosen mate. To be his forever. She could have left him dead, but she fed her blood to him bringing him back to life. Lilith had saved Vlad by turning him into a hybrid like her. Now they were the only ones left, he would make her his mate becoming an unstoppable couple. No one would ever challenge them again. They would rule together, she, his Queen.
