I brought Liz home and my mother and sister looked at me like I had let a stray dog in the house. I shooed them away and took Liz up to my room.
"This was Camila's room," Liz mentioned. I pretended not to know that already. "I wonder." Liz walked over to the closet and I could see Camila's face light up. Here I thought she was going to freak out having someone find her hideout.
"Woah, it's still the same," Liz said. Camila went in after her and I realized she wasn't coming down anytime soon so I went into the closet and hopped up into the nook. The space wasn't so small but it was easier for these two skinny short girls to get in and sit comfortably than it was for me.
"So," I said impatiently.
"Oh, right, sorry, it is just weird being back here," I guessed they used to hang out here a lot. "Well, I told you Camila was my best friend and we did everything together. That is when she wasn't with Miguel. It's funny we were such opposites but we still got along and were so close." Liz was getting sad but I couldn't help but notice how different they were. How were these two such good friends?
"Well, she loved to be adventurous and I always played it safe," I could see that. "She was so outgoing and I think you can tell I am shy." I actually raised an eyebrow at that because the way she was talking at the burger place she didn't seem shy. She actually seemed determined.
"We had a lot of inside jokes and we shared so many secrets," Liz continued to tell me. "Well, Miguel had always been by Camila's side too and they hung out just about as much as we did. He was a good guy but he didn't like Camila as she liked him." I was getting kind of annoyed because I already knew this part. Camila laughed and I knew she was laughing at me.
"Okay, I get he didn't like her but he did something to her didn't he?" I asked eagerly. Both girls looked at me like they wanted to hit me for being rude.
"Yeah, Miguel agreed to go out with her and I knew about the agreement she had with him but he still should have just told Camila that he had a crush on Jennifer," Liz said.
"You don't think she knew?" I pondered.
"No, Camila would have told me," I looked over to Camila and I sighed. "Well, anyway, Miguel apparently wanted to ask Jennifer to the Winter Fest Ball, it was three days before the Winter Musical."
"Did he?" I asked impatiently as I wondered if that was what that bastard did to hurt Camila.
"No, Camila started telling everyone they were going together. I mean they were officially boyfriend and girlfriend by then so," Liz explained. "Miguel and Jennifer did share a dance together and I guess that's where it all started. Camila got worried she was going to lose him and they had a fight and-," Lord if they keep cutting their stories short.
"That's it," I said grumpily.
"Well, no but mostly everyone who lives in this town knows about what happened so we don't have to talk about it," Liz said. "It's hard to talk about if you haven't noticed."
"Oh, I noticed," I said as I gave Camila an annoyed looked.
"They had a huge fight right before Camila's big song and she stormed out of the auditorium and well, no one saw her again," so if I wanted the rest of the story I would need to hear it from Camila, I thought.
"I am kind of glad to have someone to talk to about her, I haven't really talked to anyone since, it's been hard and they are all so fake," Liz said. I was really hoping she didn't think we were suddenly friends now. I tried to smile at her but it came out kind of creepy. It was getting late so Liz said she was going home. I got out of that tiny nook in the closet and walked Liz home. Apparently, she lived five houses down.
"So are you going to tell me the rest of the story," I asked Camila. We were still standing there waiting for Liz to go into her house. Liz turned to wave at me and Camila was the only one who waved back.
"There is nothing to tell," Camila said.
"Don't, Don't do that," I said.
"Okay, fine, I'll tell you but can I please beg you not to do anything stupid after I tell you," she said.
"Promise," I said.
"You better mean it," she pouted.
"I mean it, I won't do anything stupid," I told her.
"I want to show you something first," Camila said. I rolled my eyes knowing I might not hear the rest of the story tonight. We got back home and Camila went into the closet and pulled something out of her nook.
"Here, look," she handed me a yearbook.
"Um, okay," I said confused about what it meant.
"Look through it," she said. I sat down on the edge of my bed and looked through it. It had so many signatures. Camila really was popular. It didn't just have simple comments or just someone's signature. Some were declaring their love, some put their phone numbers, and others wrote how much she inspired them and how much they liked her or what they liked about her. Camila came over and sat next to me and flip through the pages. She showed me a picture of Liz.
"Woah," I said surprised at what I was looking at. Liz had longer shinier hair. She had pretty hazel eyes. I began to wonder what happened that made her lose interest in her looks. She was obviously just as pretty as Camila. She then showed me a picture of both of them. Camila started to tell me stories about what they used to do together and how much trouble she would get them into. She said their very first adventure was helping a scared Liz escape kindergarten along with their nap mats and sleeping in the bathroom when they got tired. I guess Camila was getting tired so she laid down on the bed. I looked through the yearbook some more and saw Camila in her costume during the Winter Musical. There was even a picture of her and Miguel at that dance. She looked so beautiful. She didn't have white hair. She had the most beautiful light golden blonde hair I had ever seen.
"I wish I could have met you before you died," I whispered.
