CHAPTER 8
When Doug arrived home and saw the deputy sheriff’s car out front, he hurried inside to see what was wrong. He looked around and spotted Greg, sitting in a chair, with the deputy sitting next to him. Les was sitting on the couch with his arm around Lily. Lily had a cradle next to her with a baby in it. Doug took all of this in quickly as he stood in the door.
“What’s happened?” he asked. “Greg, I didn’t know you were back. Where’s Erin?” Greg just hung his head.
Lily got up and went to Doug. “Erin is gone,” she said hugging Doug.
“Gone,” he repeated. “How?”
The deputy turned and looked at Doug. “The doctor said she hemorrhaged after giving birth. She managed to take care of the baby, then she started bleeding and had no way to get help.”
