Chapter 1
Chapter 1
“Ouch” Elsie groans in pain and rubs her forehead with her palm. She still had a hangover from all the drinks she had taken last night. It's been two weeks since her fiancé left her just a few days before their wedding. She still hadn’t gotten over it but her boss being the ass that he is won’t give her enough time to put herself together. He ordered her to resume work as soon as possible or risk losing her job.
“s**t” Elsie curses out as throws her phone on the bed and jumps out but ends up landing on the floor. She had less than an hour to be at her workplace or she would get it hot from her boss.
“How did I sleep this much? I knew I shouldn’t have taken that much drinks yesterday now I feel awful” Elsie says as she quickly scans through her unkept wardrobe in search of a dress to wear.
“I think I might just go for this one even though it smells kind of awkward. I must have mixed it with my dirty clothes because I haven’t worn this in a while well, perfume will help do the magic” she squeezes her face in disgust at the smell of the crumpled blue gown she was holding.
She tosses it on the bed and staggers to the bathroom.
She gently pours some shampoo on her hand and massages her hair with it. She scrubs her body hurriedly, rinse her hair and heads out of the bathroom.
“That water did magic on my body, I feel myself a bit” she dries her hair and packs it in a messy bun and applies little makeup on her face.
Standing up from the chair to go wear her dress, her towel drops on the floor and she quickly dresses up and sprays two of her designer perfumes on her cloth so as to remove the bad smell oozing out of the cloth and disgracing her.
She picks up her phone, laptop and working materials. She moves over to her dressing table to look for her car keys but she couldn’t find them. She shuffles around the things on the table but still no sight of her keys.
“Kasleyyy!!!” Elsie hits her hand on the table in anger.
“She must’ve taken my car out. I always keep the keys here” she dashes to her window and slides the curtain up to see if her car was parked there and yes, she thought it was right. Her car was no where to be found.
In frustration, she looks at her watch and sees that she is already running late. She had less than 10 minutes to reach her office or have to contend with her boss.
She picks up her bag and leaves her room in a hurry.
“Dad I’m off to work” she yells on top of her voice and sprints out of the door.
Just as she was about to stop a taxi, she felt her phone vibrating in her bag.
“Please let it not be my boss” she mutters under her breath and reaches her bag for her phone.
She sighs in relief as she sees the name of the caller “best girl”.
“Amy not now please I’ll call you later” she says to herself as she throws the phone back into the bag and stops a taxi.
Amy was her best friend since high school and their bond was very strong.
She hurries into the taxi and shuts the door loudly as she glances at her watch again.
“Jere’s empire” she tells the cab man and brushes her hair back.
She didn’t need to give him any description of the place she was working because it was one of the biggest fashion stores in Hudson. She worked there as a personal assistant to Jeremy, a proud fashion tycoon who was well known in the city.
It had always been Elsie’s dream since she was a child to own her own fashion brand but she didn’t have enough money to start up one yet.
She was filled with joy three years back when she saw her appointment letter to work as the personal assistant to one of the best fashion stylists in the city. It was like she was one step close to achieving her dreams.
Though, these three years working as an assistant to Jeremy was Elsie’s worst nightmare. Her boss was a pain in the ass and never seemed to be satisfied with anything that she does no matter how much she tried to please him.
Elsie had to endure all the ill treatments from her boss to her because the pay was good and she was also learning from one of the best.
“We are here, miss” the cab man said as he stopped in front of the tall white building where Elsie worked.
“Here you go, keep the change” Elsie handed the money over to the cab man and dashed out of the car.
“Thanks miss” the cab man yelled out but it was too late as she had already ran into the building.
“You are late, he has been pacing around his office since” Kim, Elsie’s coworker yelled out to Elsie who was panting heavily.
“Oh my God I’m fifteen minutes late, I’ll go see him now. Wish me luck” Elsie mutters in fear and heads to her bosses office.
“I wish you all the luck you can get” Kim chuckles and continues her fitting on a dress she was making.
Kim is Elsie’s best coworker and gossip mate. She is one of the reasons Elsie has not lost her mind working for Jeremy. She has a very free spirit and a good sense of humor and knows how best to cheer anyone up.
“Haaaa” Elsie exhaled loudly as she stood in front of her boss's office. She adjusts her dress and brushes her hair well. She was just fifteen minutes late but fifteen minutes seems like fifteen hours to Jeremy.
She gets a hold of herself and taps gently on the door before turning the door knob and heading inside.
“Go…od morn…ing sir” Elsie stammers and gulps down a large chunk of saliva.
“You are late Elsie” Jeremy says as she spins his chair to face her.
“I am so..” Elsie tries to explain herself but is immediately cut shut by her boss.
She takes in a very deep breath and mutters a quick prayer in her heart, she couldn’t stand losing her job.
“I’m tempted to fire you but I can’t risk losing my best worker and what the hell are you wearing? Jeremy inquired as he franks his brows and looks at Elsie from her head to her feet.
“I was..” Elsie tries to speak up but is again cut shut by her boss. She rolls her eyes while facing down and mutters “asshole” under her breath.
“We have a very big client coming over and you and I are going to attend to her and I can’t have you looking like that” Jeremy points his hand towards her dress and squeezes his face in disgust.
“Go to the store house and get something more presentable to wear, you can keep the dress afterwards. Leave!” Jeremy points towards the door signaling Elsie to leave his office and continues typing on his laptop.
“Alright sir, thank you sir” Elsie says and hurries out of the office.
“The dress is not even that bad or maybe it actually is” Elsie looks down at her dress one more time and notices some stains and wrinkled lines on it.
She walks back to her office to meet Kim who is staring right into her eyes with pity.
“Don’t worry I’m not dead and he didn’t fire me” She quickly interrupts Kim as if she read her mind and knew what she was thinking.
“That is such a relief” Kim inhales and exhales loudly as she dropped the dress she was working on and stood beside Elsie.
“I can tell that he said some really hurtful things to you. I’m so sorry” Kim tries to comfort Elsie as she rubs her shoulder.
“It’s fine, he didn’t really say hurtful things to me, he just trashed the cloth I’m wearing and told me to change it because we are expecting a big client” Elsie rolls her eyes and looks back at Kim.
“Ooh that’s ok..ay I guess but the dress is not that bad” Kim says trying to hide her face from Elsie because she totally meant the opposite.
“Yeah, right you know you it’s that bad” Elsie says.
“Honestly though, what were you thinking wearing that to almighty Jere’s empire?” Kim asks Elsie as she tries to hold back her laughter.
“I had a very bad hangover this morning and I woke up late. I wasn’t thinking straight when I brought out this dress” Elsie tells her and begins to arrange her work space.
“Ohh, how are you though?” Kim inquires in a concerned tone as she places her hand on Elsie’s laps.
Memories began to flood Elsie’s head and she could feel tears welling up in her eyes.
“I’m fine” Elsie manages to say and tries to hide her face from Kim, unknowing to her that Kim had already seen the tears in her eyes.
“There you go” kim hands Elsie some tissue to wipe her eyes.
Elsie takes it as Kim draws her into a hug.
“Don’t worry you’ll be fine. You will get over it. It’s his loss and not yours” Kim reassures Elsie as she rubs her back and tries to comfort her as she sobs on her shoulders.
“No smooching around, I didn’t play around to get all what I have today. I need you to get to work and Elsie what are still doing on that dress” Jeremy interrupts Kim and Elsie causing them to jerk in fear as he walks out of his office and sees them hugging.
Kim rushes back to the dress she was working on and Elsie wipes her eyes and heads out to go change her dress.
She reaches the store house and Kim’s voice echoes in her head “it’s his loss and not yours”.
“It’s his loss and not mine”Elsie mutters and lets out a sigh.
She goes into the store and searches for something good to wear. A red dress with a little slit by the side and shiny stones on the waist region catches her attention and she quickly reaches for it.
She places it on her body and looks in the mirror. “This should fit me perfectly” she thought as she continues smiling to herself in the mirror.
Elsie remembers her last date with Dan where he proposed to her and the cloth she was holding was similar to what she wore for the date.
The date was in a beautiful restaurant and that was where Dan confessed his undying love for her and promised to be with her to the end and thereafter proposed to her with the most beautiful ring ever.
“What changed?” Elsie mutters and sniffs in as tears begin to build up again in her eyes.
“I have to get over you and I will. You don’t deserve me” Elsie yells at herself and wipes her eyes.
Just as she was about to try on the dress, she felt her buzzing with so many text messages.
“Who could that be” she thought to herself as she tosses the cloth and looks down at her phone to see tons of messages from her sister.
She opens the message.
“Oh my God” she exclaims and dashes out of the store house and runs to meet Kim.
“I need to be somewhere now please cover up for me and buzz me once the client arrives” Elsie mumbles and sprints out of the office.
“What happened?” Kim tries asking Elsie but it was already too late as she was already out of the office door.
