Chapter Eight: The DNA Results

“In the matter regarding the paternity of the unborn child, Amber Masterson is carrying there is a 99.9999% chance that you ARE the father, Alpha Kai.” His eyes dart to me and for a moment it looks like he is going to yell at me and I wince slightly. My heart is racing, but there… Now he knows the truth. “f*****g fantastic,” he growls as he turns and walks out of the room. I feel like I have just been punched in the gut. I was hoping for a reprieve from him knowing the truth, but his reaction has left a deep and gnawing pain. My head drops into my hands as the tears stream down my face. Dr. Gee stands up off of her stool and walks over to me. She pulls me into a tight embrace, “Everything will be okay, Amber. He just needs time to process everything.” She tries to reassure me. It’s a futile remark and I can’t get control over my emotions. I want to scream, how dare he? How dare he act like that. This is a living, breathing, baby and he knew damn good and well he didn’t use a condom. I want to go home. I don’t ever want to step foot in Florida again. I hop off of the table and walk out of the room as Sarah and Dr. Gee watch. I didn’t care if the appointment was over. I was done. I exit the hallway into the lobby in tears and Dad instantly jumps up. “Amber, what’s wrong hunny?” he asks concern, lacing his face. “I wanna go home. Now.” “Wait a minute. What is wrong?” “YOUR ALPHA IS THE FATHER OF MY BABY,” I yell at the top of my lungs. Everyone in the lobby directs their attention at me as I break down. Dad’s face contorts as he stares at me in disbelief. “I’m sorry. What did you just say?” “You heard me, Dad.” Dad is consumed with anger and fury. You can see it and you can feel it. His eyes dart to the door as he had to have seen Kai enter and exit the office. He charges out the front door and Sarah and Dr. Gee quickly rush out behind him. “Gamma Tyler, Stop,” Dr. Gee yells while she chases after him. “I will kill him,” Dad roars. “Stop. Please,” Dr. Gee pleads. Kai was already gone, leaving nothing but tire marks and dust behind him. Dad shakes his head in frustration and looks at Sia and me. “Get in the car girls, now.” Sia and I hop in the car as we are told and Dad starts the car, peeling out of the parking lot like a maniac. Dr. Gee must’ve called Ryker or one of the other members of leadership to let them know we were on our way and Dad is furious as they are waiting outside when he pulls into the driveway like a bat out of hell. The gate isn’t fully open as he inches past it. The tires squeal as we come to a hard stop, jolting Sia and me forward. “Dad!” Sia shouts. The car door is barely open as he yells, “Where the f**k is he?” “Calm down, Tyler,” Ryker says, trying to defuse the situation. “WHERE IS HE,” Dad roars. Beta Wang, Beta Jeon, and Delta Ty look like they are going to s**t their pants. Dad is pissed. They aren’t used to seeing him like this. He rarely gets mad, but when he does. Watch out. “Tyler, Kai is not here,” Beta Wang says as softly as possible. Dad’s jaw clenches shut and his fists double at his sides. I swear you can see steam rolling out of his ears with how angry he is. I feel bad, this isn’t their fault and they are getting the s**t end of the stick with this. “Where is he?” Dad asks a little more calmly. “I don’t know. He left earlier and hasn’t been back. What is wrong, Tyler?” Ryker asks softly. His head shakes, “As if you don’t know.” Ryker’s eyes trail over to the car where Sia and I sit inside. He looks back at Dad and a dejected expression spreads across his face. “I do know. We know.” “17 ½ years. I have been with all of you for 17 f*****g YEARS and he didn’t even have the damn balls to tell me himself.” The four of them exchange looks with each other, but at the end of the day, it is not their fault. I wonder what Dad would do if he knew Ryker slept with Sia that night, but that’s not my business and I would never say anything. Dad throws his hands in the air and heads back for the car, but not before a car speeds into the driveway. I see Ryker, Jackson, Jeon, and Ty’s eyes widen as Kai comes speeding in and throwing his car into the park. He doesn’t even look in Dad’s direction and starts heading for their house. “You're gonna act like I’m not standing here,” Dad spits as Kai blows past the group. Kai stops dead in his tracks and only turns his head to look back. The look in his eyes is scary. He looks like he is about to blow a fuse or short circuit. I am eternally grateful that Sia and I are sitting in the car. “I have nothing to say to you right now,” Kai growls lowly. “Well that’s just too f*****g bad now, isn’t it. How could you? That’s my f*****g daughter! I’m telling you right now, get your s**t together, Kai. If you don’t make this right I will renounce my title as Gamma and pull my daughters and me out of the pack for good and you’ll never see me again.” They look heartbroken hearing our Dad say this as if it genuinely hurt them. “Tyler, that's not necessary,” Alpha Ryker replies. “You will be there for my daughter and yours. Do you understand me?” Dad yells, directing his voice toward Kai. Kai’s face drops when he says ‘My daughter and yours’. “Tyler, please just come inside and we can all talk about this,” Beta Jeon says, trying to defuse the situation. “No way in hell. The ball is in his court,” Dad spits as he gets into the car and slams the door shut. The air in the car is heavy with anger, sadness, and frustration. Our Dad loves and cares about the five of them. They were young when he came into their lives, not too much older than Sia and I. Though he was best friends with their parents he has grown closer to the five of them over the years. When the war happened and the previous leadership almost died Dad was the one who saved them. He saved the entire pack. His reward was becoming Gamma. But even more than that it is the undeniable bond he has with the five of them. No words are spoken on the drive to the airport or the flight home. Dad is quiet, he looks hurt and betrayed. Once we land in Bloomington we hop in the car and head home. I know we will have to go to Florida again in two weeks and I am dreading it. The pain has become so unbearable over the past week. I have had to call out of work three out of my five shifts and waking up this morning I know I am not going to be able to go in. I throw my legs gently over my bed and wince at the pain as my feet hit the floor. I slowly make my way down the stairs and find Dad watching the morning news. “Hi hunny, how are you feeling today?” I burst into tears just by the simple question and he hops off of the couch. “Oh, Amber,” he says, his voice tender as he embraces me. My entire body aches and the worst of it are my ligaments and lower back. My boobs are also killing me. They ache. Every second of every day. Nothing is helping with the discomfort at this point and I feel completely helpless. I have been trying to read to relax as Dr. Gee suggested but it's useless. “Call in, Amber.” “I can’t Dad, they’ll fire me,” I say through tears. “That’s their loss then.” After talking to Dad for a few minutes I decide to call in because there is no way I can stand on my feet for eight hours with how much pain I am in. My heart races as I wait for them to answer the phone at work. “Thank you for calling Fresh Brews, this is Angela. How can I help you?”
