One of my co-workers, Angela, answers the phone and I hear her yell over for Mallory, the general manager. I’m guessing she thought the phone was muted because she says, “I swear to God if she’s calling out again she’s done.”
I shake my head, trying to hold my tears back.
“This is Mallory,” she says, her words laced with annoyance.
“Hi Mallory, it’s Amber. I am not going to be able to come in today.”
“I figured. Unfortunately Amber we are going to have to part ways. You have missed too many shifts recently.”
Dad grabs the phone out of my hand and hangs it up. He heard every word as the phone was on speaker. I head back up to my room, I just want to be alone. I use the restroom and slowly climb back into my bed. I look around my room, my walls are still pink from when I was seven. Beanie baby stickers are stuck to the back of my white bedroom door and I laugh at the memory of how they got there.
Dad had gotten them for me on our ninth birthday and his only rule was I couldn’t put them on the walls. So imagine his surprise when he came in to tuck me in that night and they were plastered on the back of my door. I continue looking around, wondering where I will put a crib, changing table, and all the stuff I will need for the baby.
My room is a decent size and has a walk-in closet and bathroom. I wish I was feeling up to doing…well anything really, because I would paint my room and move things around to prepare for her arrival. But, alas, I can’t right now. The pink is pretty, it's a few shades darker than baby pink, but it’s not my style anymore. Pink is still my favorite color, but I am more of a modern design girl at this point.
I grab my phone and start scrolling through Pinterest for designs that would look good. I come across a few but none are what I have in mind. I shrug, give up, and throw my phone onto my bed.
I can’t believe it’s already been two weeks since we were in Florida and I’d be lying if I said I was looking forward to this appointment today. Not because of the pregnancy, but because of everything surrounding it. Regardless if Kai is there for her or not, I will be. I love her more than anything already and I can’t wait to meet her.
My pain isn’t as intense today as it has been, but I am still moving slower than normal. My baby bump has more than doubled in size and I low-key love it. We will be going shopping at the Key West mall today, which I am looking forward to. I need maternity clothes because none of my pants fit anymore.
I am finally feeling excited about the baby coming and I do have a name picked out for her, but I am not telling anyone. That is for her and I to know, at least for now.
The flight down to Key West is peaceful today, we don't hit any turbulence and we arrive on time. Dad’s mood seems to be better today too as he has more pep in his step than he has over the past two weeks.
The appointment is smooth, a quick ultrasound measuring the baby and listening to her heartbeat, peeing in the cup of shame, and a conversation about my next appointment finishes it out.
“Do you want me to relay this information to your Dad?” Dr. Gee asks with a smile.
“No, I can let him know. I see you in two weeks and that’ll be my final appointment before we have to be down here for the remainder of my pregnancy, right?”
“Correct.”
I say goodbye and walk out into the lobby where Dad and Sia are waiting for me.
“How was it hunny?”
“It was good and she is doing great. My next appointment is in two weeks and that is the last one before we have to be down here until she is twelve weeks old,” I say in one rushed breath.
Dad nods and smiles as we exit the building and head for the car. The mall is a thirty-minute drive from the doctor's office and I swear Dad wants to pull his hair out. Sia and I laugh when I tell Dad I want to go into one last store before we leave. After we finish up in H&M I smell pretzels and I need one.
“Dad,” I say pointing at Auntie M’s.
He laughs and nods towards it and we walk over there. I end up ordering a large mini hot dog cup, a salted pretzel with extra salt, and a large sprite with light ice. I also get three cups of cheese sauce for myself. After eating, it is time to head back to the airport and fly home.
On the way back to the airport Dad receives a call from Ryker asking if we are down here and he tells him that we are, but that we are leaving shortly.
“Would you mind swinging by?” Ryker asks him.
“I do mind. Amber is with me and I am not subjecting her to Kai’s rude behavior. We will be back down in two weeks and I will plan something for them to do. Is this pack related?”
“No… we want to talk to you about everything.”
“Maybe next time. I have to go, I am driving,” Dad says as he hits end on the call.
My eyes flick over to my sister and we stare at each other. Dad is hurting over this and I don’t want him to stop being their friend as it's not their fault Kai is acting the way that he is.
“Dad,” I say softly.
“Yeah?”
“You can go see them if you want.”
He shakes his head and ends the conversation there. We arrive at Key West Regional Airport around 4:15 p.m. to fly home, but the jet is not there. Dad is furious. He immediately tugs his phone out of his pocket and slams down on Jackson’s name in his contact list.
“Hey, Tyl…,” is all he can get out before Dad starts yelling.
“Where is the f*****g jet?”
“What?” Jackson replies confused.
“The jet, Jackson, it's not here.”
“f*****g hang on.”
Jackson yells for Jeon and Ty and asks them if someone is using the jet. They can be heard saying no, and then soft mutters. Jackson yells for Ryker but receives no response and he doesn’t yell for Kai at all.
“Jeon is calling Colesone, because we all knew you needed it to get home.”
Dad hangs up the phone and while we are waiting to hear back from the other guys Ryker walks in.
“Tyler.”
Dad’s attention turns to him and you can see the vein in his forehead pulsating. He turns bright red and shakes his head, “What?”
“We need to talk,” Ryker replies dryly.
“And I said no.”
“Tyler come on.”
Dad’s growing increasingly angry. I am worried he might lash out at him, but surely he won't.
“I said NO. Where is the damn jet? My daughter is pregnant with your niece and has been in severe pain for weeks or did you forget?” Dad shouts.
Ryker’s eyes trail over to me and land on my bump, which is huge at this point. His eyes show a sadness that is unfamiliar to me. He is identical to Kai and unfortunately for him I only see his brother and how he has been treating me throughout my pregnancy.
“Tyler, the jet is here. I just want to talk to you…you’re family to us. I can’t help how Kai is treating your daughter and the rest of us do not agree with it. You’re taking his actions out on us. We want to help her, but we can’t do that if you’re not talking to us.”
Dad’s expression softens as he takes a deep breath and throws his hands in the air, “What do you want me to do? She’s my daughter. He used her, left her pregnant, and is now being a dick.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
“Look, we will be back down here in two weeks. I will swing by after that appointment.”
Ryker nods and lets the staff know that we can use the jet and we head to board. Dad doesn’t say much on the flight home. You can tell he is torn up over this entire situation and I can’t help but feel guilty.
Kai’s POV:
I light a joint and listen to the sizzle as I take a hit off of it when a thought crosses my mind. How the hell did I get a human pregnant? The thought has been puzzling me for weeks and I decide to call my rep. Holly at NORA.
“Thank you for calling NORA, this is Holly. How can I help you?”
“Holly this is Alpha Kai. I need to run something by you.”
“Hi, Alpha Kai. What’s going on?”
“Look I…I have a baby on the way but I am confused as all hell. The mother is a human.” I reply dryly.
“Oh! Your mate is pregnant?”
