The leaves were dancing ever so slightly in the breeze. I could hear each individual leaf, singing it’s own song. Water lapped ever so gently at the lake’s shores, the moon a broken reflection in each ripple.
How was I here again?
I stood, noticing the same white dress as before.
My actions and movements felt so sure and controlled, like I was a puppet whose strings were being pulled. One foot, then the other, I found myself by the edge of the lake.
The wind stilled. The leaves stopped their dance, the water became glassy below me. There was a profound yet comforting silence as I felt compelled to lean over, looking for my reflection.
There she was, the Zara reflection. Her full body this time, it was like me but more womanly. My slender figure replaced with curves. I touched my collarbone, the Zara reflection did too.
Was this me?
“See, this is who you are.”
The wind had stilled, but the lake began to shimmer and ebb. My reflection became fractured and began to change.
Waist length brown hair became short and coarse. My short nose lengthened, my eyes became more piercing. My ears grew pointed, nails became long and tough.
My wolf.
“Look,” it growled softly.
I looked back and down, expecting to see my own two bare feet on the grass. Instead two wolf paws stood there.
I gasped and jumped back, my gasp came out as a yelp, and instead of jumping back I rotated and fell- two back legs!
A laugh emanated as happy distorted whine.
With concerted mental effort, I gathered all four legs and stood, edging my way back to the lake.
“This is who you are.”
Wait, that wasn’t my voice. Or even my wolf speaking. Who was that?
With wolf ears I was able to pinpoint the direction where the voice originated.
A figure emerged from the trees on the other side of the lake, a white dress similar to mine yet somehow more beautiful; long flowing dark brown hair the ends of which seemed to dance in an invisible breeze. Soft light seemed to almost glow, the way in which the moon cast a halo from behind a cloud. Piercing light blue eyes found mine.
“It is a pleasure to finally meet you, my child.”
I was so confused.
“Who are you?”
“Deep down, you already know.”
‘It’s the moon goddess, silly.’
I yelped again. “Who on earth said that? What’s going on?”
‘I’m your wolf, Bree, and that’s Selene the moon goddess. Don’t be daft.’ Bree was sassy, I liked her immediately.
“Okay this is becoming a lot to take in.”
A gentle laugh came from the figure in the white dress, however it wasn’t condescending.
“It’s alright, Ara. I forget in my eagerness to meet you, that this is all new to you.”
“You don’t say. But also, I’m Zara.”
“Oh no my child, you yourself know you are destined for better, brighter things. Ara is your true name, your wolf name.”
“But…” I paused. “But I’m an Omega, how can that possibly be my name?”
“It is in your blood,” Selene said matter-of-factly as though her one statement could answer all of my questions. It just created more.
“What’s in my blood? My parents are Omegas!”
“Your mother is an Omega. Your true father… is a discussion best had with your mother.”
I suddenly felt betrayed- was my whole life a lie?!
‘No, you were protected from a painful truth. But it is time.’
“How on earth do you know?!”
‘Because I am you, from the moment of conception, I am your whole truth, I’ve been there every step of your journey from the first second your soul came to be. And I will be here every second your soul continues to inhabit this earth.’
“Assuming I believe any of this, because honestly it’s a lot to take in, why are you here? Do you show up for everyone? I’ve never heard any other wolf speak of you before!” my questioning was now directed back at Selene.
“My sweet child, I have watched you grow. I’ve been there through every heartache, every challenge, every victory. It is unfortunate that I have to be here at all, but you are the one who will achieve great and necessary things for this pack, push forward growth and change for all packs. I have watched my children become stale, stilted in tradition with no room to move and the time for change has arisen.”
“So the obvious question is… Why me? And how on earth am I meant to achieve these things? That sounds like a lot for one person.”
“The answer to both questions is one and the same- because you yearn for more. You strive for betterness, you see outside the boundaries. You will not be alone, your fated mate awaits and I will be by your side. I am never far away and you will be able to reach me in times of true need.”
Selene’s cryptic answers frustrated me, but before I could ask further questions she began to shimmer in front of me. Like the reflection in the lake, she began to ripple and fracture, disappearing.
“Wait! I don’t understand…”
“In time, child. I promise. Just remember who you are.”
Just like that, she was gone and I found myself wondering if I had imagined the whole thing.
‘…That was something.’
