Chapter 1
"What the heck is going on here? Can someone please talk to me?"
Pamela yelled at them but got no response.
She got a call that her mother had been arrested. She drove as fast as she could down to the police station to feed her eyes.
"I will do the talking. "I doubt that your mother would admit to what she did," Kelly broke the silence. He leaned forward and looked at Pamela in the eyes.
He faced the ground. Pamela is his favorite colleague at the Lead Way insurance company.
Disclosing the unfortunate incident might shatter her heart, and he wouldn't want that to happen.
"What are you talking about? Just say something. "I'm going nuts already. "Your suspense is slowly killing me." Pamela begged with a fading voice.
Her face was gradually turning red as her ears widened so as not to miss any details Kelly was going to spill.
Just when Joshua was about to tell it all, Amanda saved him from the stress and finally confessed. "I stole a check of one million dollars from him when he came to the bank where I work,"
"This is nothing but a mad joke. "Tell me you didn't do it, Mom," Pamela was stunned and doubted her mother's confession.
"That's the truth. "I did it to keep a roof over our heads," Amanda defended her actions and didn't feel remorse.
"What the heck are you talking about? "Don't you get it? "You risk going to jail." She questioned and doubted if her mother was cajoled to make such a ridiculous confession.
"Your Dad took a huge loan of 500 thousand dollars from the bank and used the house as collateral.
Now the bank is back confiscating the house. "I couldn't stand seeing us become homeless.
"I had to do something," Amanda added. She was too ashamed to look at Pamela in the eyes.
Pamela's head was beating faster like the drums of war. Despite the explanation from her mother, nothing ever made sense. She still needed some sort of explanation.
"Now you're beginning to mess with my head. "How did you find out about the check?" She asked her mother.
"I eavesdropped on his conversation before he stepped inside the bank. I also saw him putting the check in his pocket. "I snatched it from him when we bumped into each other," Amanda confidently added. Her only regret was being caught by the bank's CCTV camera footage.
Pamela was shocked to hear about her late father's bank loan.
Now she's trapped in a dilemma that seems almost impossible to get out of.
"What are we going to do now? "You're going to plead with the CEO to drop all charges against her, right?" Pamela turned to Kelly to find solace, but he looked away.
"I know that look. Please do something," she went on both knees and gripped Kelly's trousers.
"People are watching. "You're embarrassing us," Kelly attempted to make her get up, but she declined.
She cried her eyes out, pleading for him to drop all charges against her mother.
"I can't! McKenna already knows about it. Kelly broke her heart and completely shattered her hopes of ever seeing her mom come out of jail alive.
Pamela is quite aware of how difficult it is to deal with her boss at the office, let alone a criminal case like this.
". You should go talk to him yourself.
He might listen to you. "I have got to go now," Joshua walked away without looking back and abandoned Pamela alone to face her fears.
Happy now? "I just hope you come out of this life," Pamela narrowed an unfriendly gaze at her mother.
"I'm so sorry for getting involved in my mess. "I had no idea your boss was involved. Amanda felt sorry and finally acknowledged her wrongdoings.
"I'm going back to the company to speak with him. Just pray he listens to me. But if he doesn't..." She scolded her mother and vacated the station.
Despite working for McKenna for over 6 years, Pamela has yet to get along with him. They are always at loggerheads.
She considered him very proud and ruthless. She motioned to his office and did a cross sign before landing a soft knock on the door.
"Come in?" he spoke from inside.
Pamela walked inside to find some men seated in front of McKenna.
"Oh, sorry. I had no idea you had visitors. "I guess I will be back," your associates are gone. She wanted to leave when he stopped her.
She took part in the meeting and waited until it was over.
"I don't recall asking you to come over. "What brought you to my office this morning?" He focused his attention on Sophie shortly after his associates departed.
Sir... "How do I say this?" She stuttered.
"I've got other important businesses to tend to. "If you don't know what to say, I would advise you to leave my office immediately," McKenna began to lose patience.
At full speed, she dropped both knees to the ground. "I'm sure you heard about a certain woman who stole your check earlier this morning, right? That was my mom."
She defended her mother in the presence of McKenna. She also explained why her mother stole the money.
He sighed for a moment and told her to get up. "I want to make you a better offer,"
"And what's it about?" Bewildered, Pamela raised her brows.
"If I heard you correctly, you mentioned your mom stole the check because she needed money to offset the bank loan of 500 thousand dollars, right?"
"Yeah, and how has that got to do with this?"
"How about I drop all the charges and offset the loan?"
"Are you joking? Please tell me this ain't no dream." She jumped for Joy.
"Not so fast. It comes with a price.
"Are you ready for what's coming your way?" he interrupted her brief moment of happiness.
"Get married to my son, Declan, in a contracted marriage. The contract was only going to last for five years. "Once the deal is off, can you file for a divorce?" McKenna buttressed, but she wasn't even interested and outright declined his request.
"Even when your mother's freedom is at stake? "I'm sure you don't want to start roaming the streets homeless when the bank finally confiscates your house." He mocked her.
"Never! "I'm never going to marry your son for a billion dollars. "Good luck finding your son a wife," She slammed the door and exited his office.
