When Hearts Collide Chapter 26 – The Mastermind The arrest of Vanessa's former driver made headlines across London. Television stations reported that police had detained a suspect connected to the attacks on Cole Developments. However, without a confession or stronger evidence, the investigation remained incomplete. At headquarters, Ethan gathered Ryan, Detective Whitmore, and the company's legal team. "We're getting closer," Ethan said. "But not close enough." Detective Whitmore nodded. "The driver refuses to answer questions. He keeps asking for his lawyer." Ryan folded his arms. "Someone is paying him to stay quiet." Sophia entered the conference room carrying a folder. "I've been reviewing the company's old project files." Everyone looked at her. "I found something unusual." She spread several documents across the table. "Three years ago, Cole Developments competed for a major redevelopment contract." Ethan immediately recognized the file. "The Westbrook Project." Sophia nodded. "The company that lost the bid went bankrupt six months later." Ryan frowned. "What does that have to do with us?" Sophia pointed to one name in the documents. Victor Langford. "He owned the rival company." Detective Whitmore's eyes narrowed. "I've heard that name before." "So have I," Ethan replied quietly. Later that afternoon, the detective returned with a file from police records. "Victor Langford disappeared from public life after losing his business." He placed a photograph on the table. The man was in his late fifties, wearing an expensive suit and a confident smile. "He blamed Cole Developments for his downfall." Ryan studied the file. "But what connects him to Vanessa?" The detective turned another page. A photograph showed Victor and Vanessa attending a charity auction together eighteen months earlier. Sophia looked at Ethan. "So they know each other." "It appears they know each other very well." Across the city, inside a luxurious penthouse overlooking the Thames, Vanessa stood beside a large window. A man entered the room. He was tall, gray-haired, and carried himself with quiet authority. Victor Langford. "The driver has been arrested," Vanessa said. Victor poured himself a glass of whiskey. "I expected as much." "They're getting closer." He smiled calmly. "Then it's time to finish this." Vanessa looked at him. "What do you have in mind?" Victor walked to the window. "Ethan Cole took everything from me." His voice was filled with bitterness. "I've waited years for revenge." Vanessa's eyes hardened. "And Sophia?" Victor turned toward her. "She is simply... leverage." Meanwhile, Ethan and Sophia spent the evening reviewing security footage in his office. Sophia rubbed her tired eyes. "We've watched hours of video." "And we'll keep watching." She smiled. "You really don't give up." He looked at her warmly. "Neither do you." Just then, Ryan rushed into the office. "You need to see this." He placed a tablet on the desk. A newly recovered CCTV clip from a nearby street showed the night of the attempted kidnapping. A black luxury sedan appeared briefly on the screen. The license plate was partially visible. Detective Whitmore, who had just arrived, froze. "I know that car." "Whose is it?" Ethan asked. The detective took a deep breath. "It belongs to Victor Langford." The room fell silent. For the first time, they had a direct link between the attacks and the man who had every reason to hate Ethan. Late that night, Ethan drove Sophia back to the penthouse. As they stood on the balcony overlooking the city, Sophia quietly asked, "Are you frightened?" Ethan looked at the lights stretching across London. "For myself?" He shook his head. "No." He turned toward her. "I'm frightened that they'll try to hurt you again." Sophia stepped closer and took his hand. "We've faced every challenge together." She smiled softly. "And we'll face this one together too." Ethan gently kissed her forehead. "I promise." Hidden in the shadows of another rooftop, a camera lens focused on them once more. Victor lowered the binoculars and smiled coldly. "They're stronger than I expected." He slipped the binoculars into a case. "But everyone has a weakness." "And tomorrow..." "...I'll find theirs."
