When Hearts Collide
Chapter 21 – Under One Roof
Sophia barely slept.
The events of the previous evening replayed in her mind every time she closed her eyes—the white van, the strangers, the chase, and Ethan's voice calling her name.
Just before sunrise, she walked quietly into the kitchen of Ethan's penthouse.
She was surprised to find him already awake, making coffee.
"I thought I'd be the first one up," she said softly.
Ethan turned and offered a small smile.
"I haven't slept much."
She nodded.
"Neither have I."
For a few moments, they stood in comfortable silence.
Finally, Ethan handed her a warm mug.
"Here."
She accepted it.
"Thank you."
Later that morning, Detective James Whitmore arrived at the penthouse with Ryan.
"The van used in the attempted kidnapping was stolen two days ago," the detective explained.
"It was abandoned in an industrial area outside the city."
"Any fingerprints?" Ethan asked.
"Nothing useful. Whoever planned this knew exactly what they were doing."
Sophia frowned.
"So we still have no idea who's behind it?"
The detective hesitated.
"We're investigating several possibilities, but we don't have enough evidence to make an arrest."
Before leaving, he looked at Sophia.
"Until this is resolved, don't go anywhere alone."
She nodded.
"I understand."
At Cole Developments, news of the kidnapping attempt spread quickly.
Employees gathered in small groups, shocked by what had happened.
"I can't believe someone would target Sophia."
"Mr. Cole must be furious."
"He canceled all his meetings yesterday."
Ryan overheard the conversations.
He stepped forward.
"Let's remember why we're here."
Everyone looked at him.
"The best way to support Sophia is to keep this project moving."
The team quietly returned to work.
That afternoon, Ethan insisted that Sophia work from his private office instead of the design department.
"It's more secure."
She looked around the spacious room.
"I feel like everyone's going to think I'm receiving special treatment."
"They can think what they want."
He met her eyes.
"My priority is your safety."
Sophia smiled.
"I know."
As they worked side by side, the tension between them slowly faded.
For the first time since the attack, Sophia laughed when Ryan joked about Ethan's perfectly organized desk.
"You know," she teased, "I think your pens are arranged by height."
Ethan glanced at the pen holder.
"They are."
Ryan burst into laughter.
"I've worked with him for years, and that still surprises me."
Even Ethan smiled.
That evening, Lily came to visit the penthouse.
The moment she saw Sophia, she hugged her tightly.
"I was so scared."
"I'm okay."
Lily looked at Ethan.
"Thank you... for saving my sister."
Ethan shook his head.
"I only did what anyone would do."
Lily smiled knowingly.
"I don't think just anyone would."
Sophia blushed.
To avoid embarrassing them further, Ryan quickly suggested ordering dinner.
Soon the four of them were sitting around the dining table, sharing pizza instead of a formal meal.
The conversation was light, filled with laughter.
For the first time in years, Ethan's home didn't feel empty.
It felt alive.
After everyone had gone to bed, Ethan stepped onto the balcony.
The city lights stretched endlessly before him.
A few moments later, Sophia joined him.
"Couldn't sleep?"
He shook his head.
"I keep thinking about what almost happened."
She moved closer.
"I'm safe."
"I know."
"But I keep wondering..."
He looked at her.
"What if I had arrived a minute later?"
Sophia gently took his hand.
"You didn't."
He tightened his fingers around hers.
"I can't imagine losing you."
Her heart swelled.
"You won't."
They stood together beneath the quiet London sky, drawing strength from each other's presence.
Neither of them noticed the black car parked across the street.
Inside, Vanessa Blake watched the penthouse through a pair of binoculars.
She lowered them slowly.
"So... she's staying with him now."
Her expression darkened.
"If fear isn't enough to separate them..."
She reached for her phone.
"...I'll make Ethan choose between love and his company."
A cold smile spread across her face.
The game had entered a far more dangerous stage.
