Chapter 23

When Hearts Collide Chapter 23 – The Evidence Three days passed without another incident. For the first time in weeks, Cole Developments felt almost normal. Construction at Riverside Heights continued on schedule, the board regained confidence, and the media gradually shifted its attention to other stories. Even so, Ethan refused to lower security. He had learned that silence could be more dangerous than chaos. Early Monday morning, Ryan knocked on Ethan's office door. "I've got something you need to see." He placed a flash drive on the desk. "Our IT department recovered deleted files from the construction site's security server." Ethan immediately connected it to his computer. Video footage from the night of the sabotage appeared on the screen. A hooded figure entered the site just before midnight. The person's face was hidden, but one detail stood out. "They're wearing a security contractor's jacket," Ryan observed. Ethan paused the video. "Zoom in." The image sharpened just enough to reveal a small silver watch on the person's wrist. Ryan frowned. "That watch looks familiar." Meanwhile, Sophia spent the morning reviewing designs with the engineering team. As she left the meeting room, she noticed Claire, Ethan's assistant, looking worried. "Is everything okay?" Claire lowered her voice. "I wasn't supposed to mention this..." Sophia smiled reassuringly. "You can tell me." "I received an anonymous envelope this morning." She handed it over. Inside was a single photograph. It showed Ethan hugging Sophia after the attempted kidnapping. Across the bottom, someone had written in red ink: "Walk away before it's too late." Sophia's hands trembled. "This was left here?" Claire nodded. "No stamp. Someone delivered it by hand." Sophia immediately took the photograph to Ethan. His expression darkened as soon as he saw it. "They're getting bolder." Ryan examined the note. "They're trying to scare you." "They're succeeding," Sophia admitted quietly. Ethan looked directly at her. "No." She blinked. "They're reminding us that they're afraid." "Afraid?" "If they weren't afraid of us finding the truth, they wouldn't keep threatening us." Ryan nodded. "He's right." Later that afternoon, Detective Whitmore arrived at the office. "We've identified the security company that supplied guards on the night of the sabotage." "Any suspects?" Ethan asked. "One former employee disappeared the day after the incident." The detective placed a file on the table. "He also has a record for fraud." Sophia leaned forward. "Do we know where he is?" "Not yet." The detective paused. "But we found something else." He slid another photograph across the table. It showed the suspect meeting with a woman outside a luxury hotel. The woman's face was partly hidden by sunglasses. Still, Sophia recognized her immediately. "Vanessa..." Ethan stared at the photograph in disbelief. Ryan looked between them. "Are we certain?" The detective shook his head. "Not yet. The image isn't clear enough to prove her identity." Ethan clenched his fists. "If Vanessa is involved..." He couldn't finish the sentence. That evening, Ethan drove Sophia back to the penthouse. Neither of them spoke for several minutes. Finally, Sophia broke the silence. "If Vanessa really is behind all this..." "She'll answer for it." She turned toward him. "You once loved her." "I loved the person I thought she was." He looked at the road ahead. "I don't even recognize her anymore." Sophia gently rested her hand over his. "I'm sorry." He gave her a grateful smile. "Don't be." He squeezed her hand lightly. "I've already found the person I was meant to love." Sophia smiled through happy tears. Across the city, Vanessa received a phone call. "The police are getting closer." Her expression hardened. "What about the security guard?" "He's gone into hiding." Vanessa walked to the window. "No." She shook her head slowly. "He knows too much." She ended the call and picked up another phone. Her voice was cold and decisive. "Take care of him." She hung up without another word. The last person who could expose her had just become a target. And Ethan and Sophia had no idea that the truth was now closer—and more dangerous—than ever. End of Chapter 23
