When Hearts Collide Chapter 11 – Growing Feelings The morning after Vanessa's visit, Sophia couldn't stop thinking about her warning. "Anyone who gets close to him eventually gets hurt." She shook the thought away as she entered Cole Developments. She refused to let someone else's opinion affect her work. As she reached her desk, she found a neatly wrapped package with a small note. For the presentation. Well done. — E.C. Curious, she opened it. Inside was a beautiful leather-bound sketchbook engraved with her initials: S.D. Sophia ran her fingers over the cover, touched by the thoughtful gift. Ryan walked past and noticed it. "That's from Ethan?" She nodded. "I think so." Ryan laughed. "I've worked with him for eight years." "And?" "He's never bought anyone a gift before." Sophia looked at the sketchbook again, unsure what to think. Later that morning, Ethan called Sophia into his office. "I hope the sketchbook wasn't inappropriate." She smiled warmly. "It was thoughtful. Thank you." "I noticed your old notebook was falling apart." She blinked. "You noticed that?" "You use it every day." Sophia couldn't help smiling. "You really do notice everything." A faint smile crossed Ethan's face. "I told you." For a brief moment, they simply looked at each other before Ryan interrupted with a knock. "The charity gala committee is here." Ethan nodded. "We're coming." The annual charity gala was only a week away, and Cole Developments was one of the main sponsors. During the planning meeting, the organizer spoke excitedly. "We'd like Mr. Cole and Ms. Daniels to represent the company together." Several people exchanged knowing glances. Sophia shifted slightly in her chair. Ethan answered calmly. "We'll attend." That afternoon, Sophia joined the construction team for another site inspection. As she climbed a temporary staircase to inspect the upper level, one of the wooden planks suddenly cracked beneath her foot. She lost her balance. Before she could fall, a strong hand caught her wrist. Ethan. He pulled her safely toward him. For a moment, she stood only inches away. Her heart raced. "So much for being graceful," she said nervously. Ethan's expression was serious. "You could have been seriously hurt." "I'm sorry." He looked directly into her eyes. "Don't apologize." He released her hand slowly, making sure she was steady. "Just promise me you'll be more careful." She nodded. "I promise." Nearby workers quietly smiled. None of them had ever seen Ethan look so concerned for someone. That evening, Ryan joined Ethan in his office. "You've changed." Ethan looked up from his laptop. "In what way?" "You smile more." "I do not." Ryan laughed. "You just smiled yesterday." "I don't remember doing that." Ryan leaned back in his chair. "You care about Sophia." Ethan closed the file in front of him. "She's an important part of this project." "Is that the only reason?" Ethan remained silent. Ryan smiled knowingly. "I'll take that as a no." Meanwhile, Sophia returned home to find Lily waiting with takeaway dinner. "You've been working too hard," Lily said. Sophia laughed. "I've heard that somewhere before." Lily raised an eyebrow. "From your mysterious CEO?" Sophia nearly choked on her drink. "What?" "Oh, please." Lily grinned. "You smile every time you mention him." "I do not." "You absolutely do." Sophia shook her head. "He's just my boss." Lily smiled. "Keep telling yourself that." Late that night, Ethan stood alone on the balcony of his penthouse overlooking London's glowing skyline. For years, he had built walls around his heart. But lately, those walls seemed weaker every time Sophia smiled at him. Across the city, Sophia lay awake with the leather sketchbook resting on her bedside table. She traced her initials on the cover and smiled without realizing it. Neither of them was ready to admit the truth. But little by little, the line between admiration and love was beginning to disappear. End of Chapter 11
