When Hearts Collide Chapter 3 – Forced Together The news spread through Cole Developments before lunchtime. "The CEO chose the new architect." "She's working directly with Mr. Cole." "That has never happened before." Sophia tried to ignore the whispers as she carried the project file to the executive floor. Every employee she passed looked at her with curiosity. She stopped outside Ethan Cole's office and knocked. "Come in." His deep voice was calm as ever. Sophia entered cautiously. Ethan's office was elegant yet simple. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the River Thames, while shelves filled with architecture, engineering, and business books lined one wall. Ethan didn't look up immediately. He was reviewing a stack of contracts. "Take a seat." She sat quietly. After signing the last document, Ethan finally looked at her. "Do you know why I assigned you to this project?" Sophia shook her head. "I assumed you needed another architect." "No." His answer caught her off guard. "I assigned you because your designs are different. You think about people before buildings." She blinked in surprise. "You noticed that?" "I notice everything." There was no arrogance in his tone—just confidence. He slid a thick folder across the desk. "This contains every detail of the Riverside Heights Project. Read it tonight." Sophia glanced at the file. It was nearly five hundred pages thick. "Tonight?" "It needs to be done before tomorrow's site inspection." She sighed inwardly. "Understood." The next morning, Sophia arrived at the construction site wearing a white hard hat and a reflective safety vest. Tower cranes loomed overhead as workers moved steel beams and concrete panels into place. Ryan greeted her with a grin. "Didn't get much sleep?" She laughed. "Does it show?" "You have the famous 'Ethan homework' look." Before she could ask what he meant, a black luxury SUV pulled up. Ethan stepped out, dressed in a navy suit despite the dusty surroundings. Every worker immediately stood a little straighter. "Morning, everyone," he said. Unlike in the office, his voice carried warmth and respect. He shook hands with several foremen, asked about their families, and thanked a few workers for staying late the previous evening. Sophia watched in surprise. This wasn't the cold man she had expected. Ryan noticed her expression. "He treats every employee with respect," he whispered. "He just has impossibly high standards." Ethan walked over. "Ms. Daniels." "Good morning." "Walk with me." Together they toured the massive construction site. Ethan pointed toward the riverfront. "I want this area redesigned." Sophia studied the space. "It feels crowded." "Exactly." She knelt, sketching quickly in her notebook. "What if we create a public garden between the towers?" Ethan folded his arms. "Explain." "Families would have open space, businesses would attract more visitors, and the apartments overlooking the park would increase in value." He remained silent for a long moment. Finally, a faint smile touched the corner of his lips. "Breathe life into concrete." Sophia looked at him. "What?" "That's what your design does." It was the closest thing to a compliment Ethan had ever given. Her cheeks warmed. "Thank you." Later that afternoon, heavy clouds gathered above London. As the inspection ended, thunder echoed across the sky. Within seconds, rain poured down. Employees rushed toward their cars. Sophia searched through her bag. "Oh no..." She had forgotten her umbrella. She stood under the site entrance, watching the rain fall harder. A black umbrella suddenly appeared above her. She looked up. Ethan. "You'll get sick standing here." "I'll wait until it stops." "It won't." He gestured toward his SUV. "I'm driving back to the office." She hesitated. "I don't want to inconvenience you." "You won't." The drive was quiet at first, the sound of rain tapping against the windows filling the silence. Then Ethan spoke. "You left your previous company six months ago." Sophia glanced at him. "You read my employment file." "I read everyone's." She smiled slightly. "Yes. I left after... personal circumstances." He didn't ask another question. Instead, he said quietly, "You don't have to explain." For the first time, Sophia saw something behind his guarded expression. Understanding. When they arrived at the office, she thanked him before stepping out of the SUV. As she walked toward the entrance, she couldn't shake the feeling that the man everyone feared wasn't cold at all. He was simply carrying burdens no one else could see. From his office window, Ethan watched her disappear into the building. Ryan entered with two cups of coffee. "You gave her a ride?" Ethan accepted the coffee. "It was raining." Ryan smirked. "You've never offered anyone else a ride." Ethan remained silent. But for the first time in years, he found himself wondering why Sophia Daniels occupied his thoughts long after she had left his sight. End of Chapter 3
