When Hearts Collide
Chapter 7 – Dinner Invitation
The next morning, Cole Developments was buzzing with excitement.
The successful site inspection had impressed the company's investors, and the waterfront project was now receiving attention from major developers across Europe.
Sophia arrived at work carrying a folder of revised designs. As she stepped into the architecture department, several coworkers congratulated her.
"Great job yesterday, Sophia."
"You saved the project."
She smiled politely.
"It was a team effort."
Just then, Ethan's assistant approached her.
"Ms. Daniels, Mr. Cole would like to see you."
Sophia's heart skipped a beat.
She thanked the assistant and made her way to the executive floor.
Ethan was standing by the window when she entered.
"You wanted to see me?"
He turned to face her.
"Yes."
He handed her a black invitation card embossed with silver lettering.
"Our investors are hosting a formal dinner tonight."
Sophia read the invitation.
"It says partners and executives."
"You'll be attending with me."
She looked up in surprise.
"Me?"
"You designed the project they're investing in. They deserve to meet the architect."
She hesitated.
"I don't have much experience at events like this."
"You'll do fine."
His confidence in her eased her nerves.
"I'll be there."
That evening, the Grand Kensington Hotel sparkled beneath crystal chandeliers. Business leaders, politicians, and investors filled the elegant ballroom.
Sophia stepped inside wearing a simple navy-blue evening gown. She wasn't trying to outshine anyone, but her quiet elegance caught many eyes.
When Ethan saw her, he paused for a brief moment.
"You look beautiful," he said sincerely.
Sophia smiled, slightly embarrassed.
"Thank you. You look very handsome."
For a second, neither of them spoke.
Ryan, arriving behind them, grinned.
"Well, don't you two clean up nicely."
Both of them laughed, breaking the moment.
Throughout the evening, Ethan introduced Sophia to several influential investors.
"This is Ms. Sophia Daniels," he said proudly. "The lead architect behind Riverside Heights."
Each introduction boosted her confidence.
She answered questions about sustainability, design, and urban planning with professionalism.
The investors were impressed.
One elderly businessman smiled warmly.
"Mr. Cole, you've hired exceptional talent."
Ethan glanced at Sophia before replying,
"I agree."
She looked away, trying to hide the blush rising to her cheeks.
As dinner was served, soft music filled the ballroom.
The host stepped onto the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen, before dessert, we'd like to invite everyone to enjoy a dance."
Couples gradually moved onto the dance floor.
Sophia remained seated.
"I don't really dance."
Ethan stood and extended his hand.
"Neither do I."
She laughed.
"That's not very encouraging."
"We'll learn."
After a moment's hesitation, she placed her hand in his.
He led her onto the dance floor.
The music was slow, elegant, and unhurried.
Sophia rested one hand lightly on Ethan's shoulder while he gently held her other hand.
For the first few moments, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Ethan broke the silence.
"You handled tonight exceptionally well."
"I was terrified."
"It didn't show."
She smiled.
"I had a good teacher."
He looked at her with quiet admiration.
"You already knew what to do."
Their eyes met.
For a brief moment, the noise of the ballroom seemed to disappear.
Across the room, Vanessa Blake watched them dance.
Her smile faded.
"So that's Sophia Daniels."
She tightened her grip on her wine glass.
"Ethan doesn't dance."
A friend beside her whispered,
"He is tonight."
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"This isn't over."
As the evening ended, Ethan escorted Sophia outside.
The cool night air carried a gentle breeze.
"Thank you," Sophia said.
"For what?"
"For believing in me."
Ethan looked at her thoughtfully.
"You've earned every opportunity you've received."
A black limousine pulled up.
Before getting inside, Sophia turned back.
"I'm glad I came."
"So am I."
As the car drove away, Ethan remained standing on the hotel steps, watching until it disappeared into the London traffic.
For the first time in years, the guarded billionaire found himself looking forward to seeing someone again.
But inside the hotel, Vanessa Blake had already begun planning how to come between them.
