Chapter 6 – Rumors at Work

Monday morning arrived with bright sunshine replacing the rain that had covered London for days.

Sophia walked into Cole Developments with renewed confidence. The success of the client presentation had boosted her reputation, and several colleagues greeted her warmly.

"Morning, Sophia!"

"Great presentation last week."

"You've become the CEO's favorite architect."

She laughed nervously.

"I don't think that's true."

But the whispers continued.

As she reached her desk, she noticed two employees talking quietly near the printer.

"Did you see Mr. Cole driving her home?"

"I heard they've been working late together."

"Maybe there's something going on."

Sophia froze.

She knew office gossip could spread quickly, and she wanted no part of it.

Ryan appeared beside her, carrying his usual cup of coffee.

"Ignore them," he said quietly.

"They're already talking?"

Ryan nodded.

"They'll get bored eventually. Around here, people gossip whenever they don't know the whole story."

Sophia sighed.

"I just want to do my job."

"And that's exactly what you should keep doing."

Later that morning, Ethan called for another project meeting.

Everyone gathered in the conference room.

Ethan stood at the front, reviewing the construction schedule.

"Our investors have approved the next phase," he announced. "This means we'll begin work two weeks earlier than planned."

The room buzzed with excitement.

Ethan continued.

"That also means longer hours and higher expectations."

Nobody complained.

Everyone knew Ethan demanded excellence because he expected it from himself first.

After assigning tasks to each department, he turned to Sophia.

"Ms. Daniels."

"Yes, sir?"

"I want you to oversee tomorrow's site inspection."

The room fell silent.

A senior architect frowned.

"Sir, shouldn't someone with more experience handle that?"

Ethan met his gaze calmly.

"I assigned the task based on ability, not seniority."

No one argued further.

Sophia felt both honored and nervous.

"I won't disappoint you."

"I know."

The confidence in his voice surprised her.

That afternoon, Sophia visited the construction site with a team of engineers.

She carefully inspected the foundation work, comparing it to the approved blueprints.

Something caught her attention.

A section of the support beams had been installed incorrectly.

She immediately stopped the work.

"There’s a mistake here."

The site supervisor looked confused.

"We followed the drawings."

Sophia examined the measurements again.

"No. If we continue, the structure won't support the planned load."

She called Ethan immediately.

Within twenty minutes, he arrived at the site.

After reviewing the plans himself, he looked at the supervisor.

"Ms. Daniels is correct."

The supervisor's face turned pale.

"I'm sorry, sir."

"Fix it before construction resumes."

As the workers got to work correcting the mistake, Ethan turned to Sophia.

"You prevented a serious problem."

She smiled.

"I was just doing my job."

"You were protecting the company, the workers, and future residents."

His expression softened slightly.

"Well done."

Back at the office, word of the incident spread quickly.

"The new architect saved the project."

"Mr. Cole actually praised her."

"I've never seen him trust someone so quickly."

Vanessa Blake, who had come to the office for a meeting with Ethan, overheard every word.

She frowned.

"Who is Sophia Daniels?"

One employee answered carefully.

"Our newest architect."

Vanessa looked toward Ethan's office.

"So... she's the woman everyone's talking about."

A slow smile appeared on her face, but there was no warmth in it.

"Interesting."

That evening, Ethan remained in his office reviewing reports when Ryan walked in.

"You've been unusually generous with your compliments lately."

Ethan didn't look up.

"I compliment good work."

Ryan smirked.

"Only good work?"

Ethan finally raised an eyebrow.

"What are you implying?"

Ryan chuckled.

"Nothing."

But as he left the office, Ryan couldn't help smiling.

For the first time in years, Ethan Cole seemed interested in someone beyond business.

And neither of them realized that Vanessa Blake had already decided to find out exactly who Sophia Daniels was—and why Ethan trusted her.
