When Hearts Collide Chapter 5 – Unexpected Kindness The following morning, Sophia arrived at Cole Developments carrying two cups of coffee. One was for herself, while the other was for Ryan, who had helped her settle into the company. As she stepped out of the elevator, she noticed a crowd gathered near the reception area. "What happened?" she asked. "The elevator stopped working for a few minutes," one employee replied. "Mr. Cole was inside." Sophia looked toward the hallway just as Ethan emerged. His suit was as neat as ever, and his expression gave nothing away. "Is everyone all right?" he asked the maintenance manager. "Yes, sir. We apologize for the inconvenience." "Fix it before the end of the day," Ethan said calmly. "Safety comes first." He didn't raise his voice or blame anyone. Instead, he simply continued toward his office. Sophia watched him leave. "He really does stay calm under pressure," she thought. Later that morning, the architecture team gathered in the design studio to finalize the waterfront project's presentation. Sophia connected her laptop to the projector. "Let's review the latest drawings." Halfway through her presentation, the screen suddenly went black. Her laptop had frozen. "Oh no..." She pressed several keys, but nothing happened. The room fell silent. Important client representatives would arrive in less than ten minutes. Sophia felt panic rising. Then Ethan, who had been quietly observing from the back of the room, stepped forward. "Move aside." She did. He examined the laptop for a moment before connecting it to another display cable. "The cable isn't the problem," he said. He restarted the system and recovered the presentation from an automatic backup. The screen lit up again. Everyone sighed in relief. Sophia smiled. "You just saved my presentation." "It wasn't difficult," Ethan replied. "It was to me." He gave a small nod. "Always keep a backup. Technology fails when you least expect it." "I'll remember that." The meeting with the clients went better than anyone expected. Sophia confidently explained the architectural vision, while Ethan handled the business side with precision and confidence. When the presentation ended, the lead client shook Ethan's hand. "Excellent work." Then he turned to Sophia. "Your design is remarkable." "Thank you," she replied with a grateful smile. As the clients left, Ryan clapped Sophia on the shoulder. "You were brilliant." She laughed. "I almost wasn't." Ryan looked toward Ethan. "Good thing someone knows more than business." Sophia glanced at Ethan. "Thank you... again." He simply replied, "You're welcome." That evening, heavy rain once again swept across London. Sophia waited outside the office, hoping it would slow down. She checked her phone. The train service had been delayed because of the weather. A familiar black SUV pulled up beside her. The passenger window rolled down. Ethan looked at her. "Get in." She hesitated. "You'll miss your train." "There isn't one to catch." She smiled awkwardly. "You don't have to keep rescuing me." "I'm not rescuing you." His lips curved into the faintest hint of a smile. "I'm making sure one of my architects gets home safely." She laughed softly and climbed into the SUV. As they drove through the rain-soaked streets, the silence between them felt comfortable instead of awkward. After a few minutes, Ethan spoke. "Why architecture?" Sophia looked out the window before answering. "When I was a little girl, my father used to take me to old buildings and tell me every place had a story. He said architects don't just build walls—they create places where people make memories." Ethan listened quietly. "My father believed something similar," he admitted. "He used to say a building should outlive the person who designed it." Sophia turned toward him. "Sounds like he was a wise man." "He was." There was sadness in Ethan's voice. For a moment, neither of them spoke. When they reached Sophia's apartment, she unfastened her seatbelt. "Thank you for the ride." "Good night, Ms. Daniels." "Good night... Ethan." She paused after saying his first name, unsure if she had crossed a line. But instead of correcting her, Ethan gave a slight nod. "Good night, Sophia." As she stepped out of the car, she smiled to herself. For the first time since joining Cole Developments, the distance between the cold billionaire and the determined architect felt just a little smaller. End of Chapter 5
