That evening
The Last Convert watched from a distance as Professor Lawrence Winkler, esteemed researcher at Cambridge University, puttered around beneath the brilliant gold mosaics that decorated every interior surface of this basilica of matchless beauty.
The library on the Ravenna campus of Bologna University had closed an hour before, and the Last Convert, nursing a coffee in the student café across the street, had waited for Professor Winkler to show himself. As he expected, Winkler had stayed until closing time, and then the hunched old man had walked leisurely to the Basilica di San Vitale to take in the Byzantine mosaics.
