CHAPTER SIXTEEN Remi studied the nondescript façade of the library Father De Sanctis had led her to. As he had mentioned, above the plain door were the four signs of the gospels: a man for Matthew, a lion for Mark, a calf for Luke, and an eagle for John. This was a common decoration on many medieval and Renaissance buildings, but this one had a new twist. In the center was a blank circle, as if to denote a fifth, hidden gospel. Remi didn’t need any hints as to what that gospel might be. The only other strange aspect of the front of the building was that there were no windows. Since it adjoined buildings to either side and perhaps the back, Remi wondered if there were any windows at all. That would fit with their desire not to be observed.
