Shane’s POV
We are now parked outside the pack border of Capethorn town and debating what to do.
“Why are there no guards?” Phoebe asked while looking at the land in front of us.
Even from where we are, we can see that Capethorn town is located on a land in the middle of a lake and that lake is surrounded by forest that serves as a cover and protection for the town, which is probably why there are no guards out here because the only way into the town is a bridge crossing the lake. I voiced out my opinion to them and the agreed that’s probably the reason why.
“What should we do then?” Phoebe asked.
“I think we should just enter the pack border to get their attention and wait at the edge for them to arrive.” Garreth said while drinking his 3rd can of coffee. “I mean, that’s the only way we can notify them of our presence without looking like a threat, right?”
“Hmm… OK, park the van inside the border and let’s wait for them.” I said while walking into their lands until I feel the pressure in my skull that indicates that I entered another pack’s land.
After 10 minutes or so, 2 cars approached where we are. Three guys and one girl came out from the first car, probably pack warriors based on the aura they’re giving off. While in the 2nd car, 2 guys and 2 girls came out which is probably all ranked member of the pack especially the muscular guy with long blond hair tied in a ponytail, who’s probably the Alpha.
“Who are you? And how dare you enter my land?” the guy with blond hair said with Alpha voice while smirking, confirming my suspicion that he is the Alpha.
I looked at my friends to see why the Alpha is smirking at them and see them looking the ground. I then looked back at the strangers who greeted us and saw that they’re staring at me with shock evident on their faces.
“I’m sorry, Alpha. We are not a threat to your pack.” I told the Alpha, keeping my voice even. “We just wanted to speak with you, but we didn’t see any guards, so we entered your border to inform you of our presence.”
“Paul, I am Alpha Paul of Dark Moon Pack. This is my Luna, Claire. And that is my Beta and his mate, Kyle, and Lara.” He said, introducing his Pack members, then giving me a questioning look. “You have Alpha blood, don’t you?”
“That’s correct, Alpha Paul. I---” I was explaining when he cut me off bitterly.
“You should have started with that then.” He muttered while pouting a little child, causing his Luna to laugh and come closer to me.
“Don’t mind him, sweetheart. He’s just being a child because his Alpha tone didn’t work on you.” Luna Claire said with a smile. “Now, let’s go back to the pack house so you can tell us what you need.”
“No! They wil---” Alpha Paul tried to object but stopped when his Luna glared at him. He looked at his Beta, asking for help, but the Beta female looked at his mate, daring him to object to their Luna. Beta Kyle just shook his head, causing his perfectly styled grayish white hair to get messy, and looked apologetically at his Alpha. Seeing he didn’t have a choice, he just agreed to what his Luna wanted. “Fine.”
After observing that scene, it's clear that the Alpha and Beta of this pack are under their mates and would do anything they order. Just like how my mom and dad were before my mom di---. I immediately cut the thought before tears started to spill from my eyes.
“Now that’s settled, let’s go then.” Luna Claire said, then dragging me to the car. I looked behind me to see my friends following us and Beta-female Lara ordering her Alpha and mate to ride with the pack warriors.
The car ride back to the pack house was… peaceful to say the least. Beta-female Lara was the one driving, Phoebe is in the passenger’s seat, while the three of us were in the back, with me in the middle, Garreth on my right and Luna Claire on my left. Luna Claire and Beta-female Lara filled the car ride with embarrassing and hilarious stories about their mates, so hilarious to the point that Phoebe has literal tears in her eyes.
One of which is that Alpha Paul is scared of cockroaches. Luna Claire said that they were helping clean the basement at the time when a cockroach flew dangerously close to Alpha Paul, making him scream like a girl while running out and leaving his mate to kill the cockroach herself. When Alpha Paul came back, his shirt is tucked in on his pants, which is perfect for Luna Claire’s plan. She pretended to pat him on the back to comfort him, then immediately put the still alive cockroach inside his shirt. This made the Alpha scream, jump countless times, trying to remove the bug in his shirt and then decided to tear his clothes off instead. Luna Claire said that her mate was so mad he’s literally crying and didn’t talk to her for a whole week.
After arriving at the pack house, we were escorted by Omega’s to the Alpha’s Office while the ranked members we’re changing clothes and being called. Our van was also driven by one of the warriors to the pack house. What Clifden said about this being a mansion is wrong, this is a freaking castle with stone walls, chandeliers, long and wide hallways. This is so much bigger than the packhouse of our old pack. Hmm, when will I see Clifden again?
“If ever we’re asked where did we get the information about their pack, are we going to say its Clifden?” Phoebe asked with her ear pressed to the door checking is someone’s there.
“I think we should, I mean, Clifden’s human and I don’t think they could possibly hurt a human. And also, he didn’t tell us any secret of the pack anyway so it should be fine, right?” Garreth said uncertainly while looking at me.
“I don’t think lying would be a good thing to do to someone we’re asking help for. We should just tell them that the information came from a human without saying its name because dragging Clifden’s name along feels unnecessary. We should steer the conversation away from him as much as possible.” I said after some time, and they nodded their head in agreement.
After a about two minutes, Phoebe suddenly ran to sit on her chair and motioned for us to be quiet. The door suddenly slammed open, making us jump from our seats, and revealed a blond guy with very scary eyes. After him, a redhead woman looked at us apologetically. These two also feel like ranked wolf, and since I already met the Beta’s and Alpha, then these couple is most likely the Gamma.
“Uncle Jake, come on. Don’t scare our guest.” A pretty girl with greyish white hair said, probably the same age as us, entered the door along with a blond guy who looks like a kid version of their Gamma Jake, and also all the ranked wolves and 1 girl who’s build screams pack warrior. “Don’t worry about him. He a big guy but he a softie inside, cliché I know but it’s true.” She added while smiling at us.
“Since we’re all here now, let’s start the meeting please. Let me introduce everyone first. I am Alpha Paul, and my mate is Luna Claire. You already met Beta Kyle and his mate Lara. This is now Gamma Jake and his mate Sharon.” The Alpha said, introducing the adults. “Now this lady is the Beta couple’s only daughter, Lauren” pointing at the girl with greyish white hair. “This blond guy here is the eldest son of our Gammas, Kurt and this other lady here is one of the best warriors in the pack, Jenny”
After introducing his pack members, I started introducing mine. “Good morning. I am Shane, this is Garreth and the other one is Phoebe.” I said after deciding to not include our titles. “First of all, I want to than---”
“Stop sucking up and just tell us what you want.” The pack warrior, Jenny, said, irritation obvious in her tone.
Deciding to let that tone slide, I nodded my head and said what we came for. “Well, Alpha Paul, I was hoping that you would let us stay with your pack.”
“Oh, great. Another freeloader.” Jenny muttered under her breath but still loud enough for us to hear. I see Lauren glaring at Jenny in my peripheral vision while Phoebe is biting her lip and clenching her fist.
“Can you tell us why you’re packless. It’s obvious that you have Alpha blood, so why are you a rogue?” the Alpha inquired.
“Uhm… w-well.” I stumbled on my words because even if it wasn’t my fault what happened at the pack, I still feel ashamed to mention its state to someone else.
“Maybe because she’s a sl*t that’s why her own family disowned her and kicked her out.” Jenny said while smirking, louder this time.
I saw the blond guy, Kurt, bristle at that and was about to talk but Phoebe beat him to it. “Can’t you keep your mouth shut when the RANKED wolves are talking? Nobody cares about your opinion, you bit---, female dog!” she was about to curse but managed to stop herself because we’re in front of other ranked wolves.
“Huh, ranked wolves? What do you know about that when you’re just a rogue, you trash! And this girl has Alpha blood? Fine, I guess her Alpha has low standards because he took this sl*t’s ugly mother as his mistre---” Jenny said, and the moment those words left her mouth, I felt my wolf push herself out to stop the insult for her mother and friends.
My vision homed in on the girl who insulted my mother and in an instant, I already had her against the wall with me holding her neck and raising her off her feet.
“Listen here, you b*tch. I will only say this once so listen very carefully.” The words come out of my mouth but its my wolf who’s talking right now. “You can insult me anyway you want but don’t you ever, ever, insult my friends and my mother because that’s the one thing I will never f*****g forgive. The next time I hear my mother slip out of this dirty mouth of yours, I will personally rip your tongue out with my claws, cook and chop it up then feed it to you. After that, I will remove all your teeth then s***h your f*****g throat.” I growled at her using my Alpha voice.
I only manage to let go and calm down when Garreth pulled me in for a hug. I took a deep breath then pulled away. Everyone is looking at me with shock on their faces, except for Lauren who looks amazed and Kurt who grinning at me I just did him a favor.
“I apologize for the outburst. There were just trash that needs to be taken out and a b*tch who needs to learn her place.” I said after looking at the girl who’s still gasping for air at my feet, then walked to sit down at my chair again.
After a moment of silence, Gamma Jake decided to break it. “Alpha Paul said that you have Alpha blood, but it wasn’t just that, isn’t it? You are AN Alpha. THE Alpha of your own pack.” He asked and I nodded my head, the secret’s out now anyway, there’s no point in lying anymore.
“Sweetheart, I’m sorry to press this but,” Luna Claire, started looking a bit conflicted. “After what happened, we really need to know why you became rogue. You’re clearly a strong Alpha for your age, Shane. So, why aren’t you with your pack? I hope you understand, Sweetie.”
“It’s OK, Luna Claire, I do understand that it’s for the safety of your pack.” I looked at my friends for confirmation and when they nodded, I took a deep breath and started telling our story.
“You see, I am the youngest daughter of the Alpha of the Nightfall Pack. Our pack is the same as any pack out there who honors the mate bond and have respect for each other.” I said, trying to remember the little memory I have when I was still 8 and my mom was still alive. “However, it all changed when my mom, the Luna of the pack, died fighting rogues who attacked our pack. After that, my dad has gone insane due to the loss of his mate. Over the years, he implemented new rules for our pack that does not only dishonor the mate bond but also disrespects the female members of our pack. He forbid females from going to school or training to be warriors. He allowed males to be married to multiple women as long as they want. That’s the reason why the three of us swore that we would do everything in our power to bring change in our pack. When the time came, I challenged my brother and managed to win. Its already in our plan to pick Garreth as my Beta and Phoebe as my Gamma. We were so ecstatic because finally we’re in a position to bring change.” I said with a smile as I remember us celebrating my victory that night.
“I guess we celebrated too soon because the very next day. My dad called all of our parents to discuss plans on how to remove me on their way. Even if it means selling me off to another pack or even killing me. We don’t know if it’s just a stroke of luck or Phoebe’s mom’s way of helping us but, during the meeting, she ordered Phoebe to bring refreshments for the members of the pack in the meeting, which is how she overheard their plan and tell us. Well, after Phoebe told us their plan… we ran away.”
After my story, I looked up and see my friends smiling at me. While the members of Dark Moon Pack has different emotion, shocked, anger, sadness, and even admiration which is from Lauren.
“What about the elders? The council? What did they do?” Beta Kyle asked, solemnly.
Elders are the retired rank wolves of the pack while the council is a group of werewolves who govern and stands over all packs. “Well, my grandfather, who is now an elder is also one of the wolves who has multiple wives, so I doubt that they would help us. As for the council, do you think they would believe the three of us, along with those few werewolves who value the mate bond, over the ranked wolves and the entire pack?” I asked him back while looking at his eyes. Knowing that the council won’t, he averted his eyes and looked at his Alpha instead.
“OK, you can stay with us.” The Alpha said after a minute of thinking. “Jenny, please tell Darcy to order the Omega’s under her to prepare for a ceremony.”
“Wait!” Phoebe immediately said, shooting up her chair. “Ceremony for what?”
I looked at the Alpha as well with question on my eyes. Do they do ceremonies every time someone asks to stay with them?
Gamma Jake looked at us incredulously. “Ceremony for you guys joining our pack.”
“What?!” Garreth asked, too loud. “Do you always do that to people asking for a place to stay?”
“No, we don’t. But your case is a special one because you have an Alpha with you, so it needs to be done. If there are two Alpha’s in a land, it will be confused and possibly refuse one of the Alpha’s, we can’t risk that happening.” Beta Kyle explained. “You two don’t need to do it, but your Alpha needs to submit to ours if she wants to stay.”
I’m reeling from this news. Do I really have to submit to Alpha Paul? Its not that its bad… but… it’s not like I’ll stay here forever. And my wolf would never agree to it. I can already feel my wolf’s anger rising just at the thought of submitting to someone. Is there no other way? I looked at my friends and realized that I have to do it so they will have a place to stay, bed to sleep in, food to it, their own bathroom they can use anytime. I have to do this for them.
I was about to accept and submit but Garreth suddenly exclaimed. ”Co-Alphas!” we all looked at him confused. “Alpha Paul and Shane can be Co-Alphas!” Co-Alphas? What the heck is that? I feel like it’s at the tip of my tongue, but I can’t seem to remember what it is. I looked at Phoebe and see that its familiar for her too.
“That’s right! You can be Co-Alphas, and then your pack lands would be protected by two instead of one!” Garreth explained further. Dark Moon pack members are looking at their Luna now, hoping to be enlightened. She’s probably the one who knows a lot about rituals and ceremonies.
“Wait, I distinctly remember what it is. Can you help me remember it?” Luna Claire said with a little smile on her face.
“Well, it’s a simple ceremony actually. It will be a ceremony where two or more Alpha’s will swear and take an oath to protect the same land. That way, the land won’t refuse any of the Alpha’s because they will both protect it.” Garreth explained. Also helping me to remember it. Garreth is actually the one who told us about that. Since Garreth is a guy, he’s the only one allowed out of the three of us, to go to school and train to be a warrior. With that being the case, every weekend, we would all hang out in the forest where Garreth will teach us everything he learned from school and training so we will not be left behind in education. “It’s rarely done but it does happen. There is this one very strong pack in the east, and they let two other smaller and weaker packs to stay with them.”
“And why would anyone want two Alpha’s in the same land, huh?” Jenny said mockingly. “Isn’t it going to be the same if that slu---, I mean, your Alpha submitted to ours?” she was about to insult our Alpha but immediately steered clear when Shane glanced at her.
“That’s self-explanatory, you female dog.” Phoebe sneered at her, causing Jenny to glare at her. “Because if Shane submits to your Alpha, her power would be reduced to a normal wolf because she wasn’t an Alpha anymore. However, if they become Co-Alphas then this land would be protected by two full-fledged Alphas from any danger like the rogue attacks you’ve been experiencing for the past months.”
When she said that, Garreth immediately stiffened, and I looked at the Alpha whose eyes narrowed into slits. “How did you know about that?” he asked menacingly.
“About what?”
“The rogue attacks!” the Alpha shouted, banging his hand on the desk, making Phoebe and Garreth jump on their chairs making Jenny smirk. Phoebe looked at me realizing her mistake. We discussed earlier that we wouldn’t drag Clif’s name into this and mentioning the rogue attacks has foiled that plan. Of course, we could just say we heard about it from an outsider, but aside from the fact that they will know when we’re lying. Judging from the Alpha’s reaction, it makes me think that the news about rogue attacks is also probably hidden even to most of the pack members. Then how did Clifden know about the animal attacks? Did the ranked wolves tell the public its animal attacks and disguised the fact, even to werewolves, that it’s actually a rogue attack?
Before Alpha Paul could shout again, I sighed to get his attention. When he’s finally looking at me, “We heard it from someone we met at a convenience store about 5 miles from here. He’s human.”
The other ranked wolves looked at each other and the Alpha’s brows furrowed. “A human told you about the rogue attack?”
“No, Sir. He only said that it’s an animal attack, but we theorized that its actually rogues.” I said with my head a little lowered, not wanting to anger him more.
“Are you sure he’s human? Not a ranked wolf from our pack? Or even a werewolf at that?” Beta Kyle asked. I looked at Garreth and he nodded, thinking the same thing. Clif didn’t have a scent, but he’s a hundred percent human.
”I’m sure he’s human.” I said confidently.
The Alpha looked at his Beta then at his table, clearly thinking deeply. “How did someone know about it? And a human at that?” he whispered but our werewolf hearing still managed to hear it. Well, that confirmed my suspicion earlier. Nobody knows about the animal or rogue attack except the ranked wolves and probably some warriors. So, how did Clif know about it? I should be scared at how mysterious and suspicious Clifden is, but for some unknown reason, I find it sexy and trusts him completely. Even my wolf does like and trusts him too, which is crazy because my wolf never likes anyone, she doesn’t even like Phoebe and Garreth sometimes. I shook my head to clear it and decided to just ask my friends about it later.
“Who is he?” Alpha Paul looked at me with emotions in his eyes I can’t seem read. My pulse suddenly quickened at the thought Clif getting hurt because of us. Everyone in the room is tense at the possibility of a traitor in the pack. Even my wolf is prancing around in my head, nervous as to what will happen if we tell them it’s Clif. I looked at Luna Claire for assurance.
“Sweetheart, I can’t promise you things that I know there’s a chance I can’t fulfill. I’m sorry, but this is for the protection of my pack which is why we needed to know.” She said, apologetically.
I looked around me and they’re all holding they’re breathe, looking at me and some had their eyes on the floor. I’m sorry, Clif. I closed my eyes shut and blurted out his name. “Clifden, Clifden Whitlock.”
