Shane’s POV
“Clifden, Clifden Whitlock.”
I still had my eyes closed while waiting for their reaction. Then I hear their sighs of… relief? I quickly opened my eyes and looked around me. Relief evident in the eyes of some while the others had small smiles.
“Of course, it’s that kid who would spill our secrets.” Gamma Jake said while laughing. Yes, the scary, grumpy looking guy is laughing.
“Whew, you made us sweat for a second there.” Kurt said with a laugh while pretending to brush a sweat from his forehead. “Told you he’d soon know what we are. Just three to four more months and he’d figure it out already.” he said while looking at Lauren.
Lauren laughed and shook her head at head. “You underestimate Clifden’s intelligence too much. I say he’ll figure us out in a month. Wanna bet? The loser is going to do whatever the winner orders for a whole month. Deal?”
“Deal. But of course, we can’t tell Clifden directly what we are, he has to figure it out himself.” Kurt pointed out to which Lauren nodded. “Then prepare yourself, Darling, cause you… are going down.” He said with a smirk and an evil glint on his eyes.
“I’m so confused. Wha-What’s happening?” I asked my voice breaking at the end of the sentence.
Alpha Paul laughed at that, “Considering the fact that you wanted to protect Clifden that bad.” My cheeks heated up at that. ”I guess you guys deserved an explanation.”
“I think it’s already pretty clear to you guys that my pack is a lot different than other packs, right?” he asked and the three of us nodded, listening intently. “We are different because we are a pack of werewolves who lives with humans who doesn’t even know of our existence. This relationship actually started with my great, great, great, grandfather, he was the founder of Dark Moon pack along with his mate, however, they didn’t do it with just the two of them, they actually have the help of humans. They constructed the pack house, and then the town around it. It became a beneficial relationship for both species because werewolves protect the town and its citizen while the humans pay the werewolves. The generations of people of who were born and raised at this town knew about the existence of werewolves. But since human lifespan is shorter than that of werewolves, the knowledge about the supernatural world’s existence died with the people who knew about it.” Alpha Paul told us with a little smile.
“Okayyy, what is Clifden’s involvement in this then?” I asked even though I already have clue what it was.
“Well, Clifden’s parents are both descendants of the humans who helped my ancestors build this pack and town. Which is why my family, actually, all the family of the ranked wolves are pretty close to them.” He said, gesturing the whole room, at which everyone nodded at. “I have triplets and they’re the same age as you guys, and the reason they weren’t here during this meeting is because they’re hanging out with Clifden right now. Gosh, all three of them idolized him even more than they idolized me! I’m honestly starting to get jealous!” the Alpha exclaimed, and the room was filled with laughter because of that.
“Well, Clifden is literally the perfect guy any girl want. Kind, caring, generous and to top it off he’s also good-looking and has a gorgeous body.” Jenny said while biting her lip. I scrunched my nose when her arousal at imagining Clifden started to waft across the room. The others started to complain too. She sighed then said, “I wonder when will he ask me on a date.”
“N-E-V-E-R. NEVER. That’s when.” Kurt said, “You’re not even his type, so you can stop dreaming already.”
“As if. Just so you know, I’m everyone’s type.” She said confidently at which Lauren fake gagged at and Kurt scoffed and said “Definitely not mine.”
“Girl, he doesn’t even want to be close to you in any way. He doesn’t even wanna take a picture with you, much less, even give you one picture of his. He’s probably scared you’d ask a witch to make him fall for you” Lauren said where Jenny rolled her eyes at. While I saw Phoebe glance at me with a smirk in my peripheral vision Oh no, she thought of something, didn’t she? “He’s too good for you.”
“Oh, please. You’re just jealous that I don’t need a love potion to make him fall for me because my body and charm is enough.” She said then touched her b**bs. The adults just sighed and facepalmed themselves while Lauren and Kurt scrunched their faces with obvious disgust. “About the picture thing, he’s just camera shy and doesn’t want anyone having picture of his.” At this, Phoebe’s smirking evilly now and slowly rising at her seat.
“Ohh, Clifden doesn’t want anyone having a picture of his, huh?” Phoebe said, slowly walking to me. Oh, no. I immediately placed my hand over my chest pocket where I put Clif’s picture at. “Then why did he give Shane a picture the FIRST time they met then?”
Jenny laughed out loud, not believing what Phoebe said. “Y-you don’t really e-expect u-us to be-believe that lie, don’t you?” she said while gasping for air and laughing.
Phoebe just sneered at her then looked behind me. I turned my head to look too but Garreth already started tickling my sides making me laugh and try to remove his hands. Phoebe took that opportunity is take the picture out of my pocket. “Hey! Phoebe no!”
“Hah! Look at this then.” Phoebe thrusted the picture into Jenny face making her eyes widen of shock. Lauren, Kurt, and some of the adult also looked at the picture she’s holding too.
“Wow, I know he’s fit, but I didn’t know it’s that much.” Lauren said a little breathless, making Kurt frown at her and touch his stomach.
“You stole that! How dare you!” Jenny shouted trying to take the picture, but Phoebe managed to take it away from her reach.
“Stole it? Look at his message for Shane then.” Phoebe said as she turned the picture around. “Just give up, OK? You already lost to a girl he met for the first time. Aww, poor female dog.” Phoebe told Jenny with fake sympathy and gesturing her hands like wiping tears.
Jenny glared at me then walked out with a ‘hmmp’ and almost tripping on the hallway because of her ridiculously high heels, making Phoebe, Garreth, Lauren and Kurt laugh. Phoebe gave me the picture back and looked at me expectantly.
“What are you looking at me like that for?” I asked
“Your expression of gratitude?” She answered with a ‘duh’ tone
“And do pray tell why would I thank you?”
“Because I… helped you keep your man.” She said smugly
“W-what? My man? He-he’s not mine!” I sputtered at the words.
“Yeah, sure. You do want him though.” I was about to deny it, but she raised her hand. “Shh, did you know that lying is bad, little girl?!” she said with a tone as if she’s scolding a kid.
I wanted to argue but I’m aware of the fact that my wolf is bouncing and rolling on the floor and howling with happiness with Clif being called mine, so I just pouted and shut my mouth.
“As much as I enjoyed that teen drama, now that it’s done. Can we go back to pack business again?” Beta-female Lara said making Luna nod in agreement and Gamma-female Sharon to giggle.
“Well, I’m gonna start it off. I agree with the Co-Alpha thing.” Beta Kyle said. “Having two full power Alpha’s protecting us is really comforting. The only reason why we were hesitant about it at first was because we’re not sure we can trust them, right? But since its clear AND proven that its Clifden who brought them here, I don’t think there’s any reason for doubts, especially because our own Alpha's life won't be at risk anymore if they were to become Co-Alphas” When he was done speaking, everyone nodded in agreement, even the Gamma, which made us confused.
“Wait, what? Just the mention of Clifden and all of you already agreed to it? You guys were adamant about making me submit to you earlier.” I asked, looking at them but they just smiled at me.
“You know, the first time Clifden was introduced at us, we all thought that he’s not human. Aside from the fact that he doesn’t have a scent, as you probably already noticed. He’s also unnaturally good at judging a person’s character.” Luna Claire laughed a little at our shock. Wait, so its normal for Clifden to not have a scent? Is it possible for a creature to not have a smell?
“Wait, you never found it weird that he doesn’t have a scent?” Garreth asked, voicing my concern. “Is that even possible?”
“Of course, we tried to investigate at first why he doesn’t have a scent, but we eventually gave up because we can’t find any case that is the same as him and him not having a scent is not causing us a problem anyway. Well, that’s what we thought, because nowadays he’s using the fact that we can’t smell him to sneak up on us. During his first tries, we can use our hearing to catch him, but eventually, he mastered the act of moving so quietly that we wouldn’t even notice he’s there unless he talks. That sneaking up thing actually gives us adults mini heart attack sometimes.” Gamma-female Sharon laughed.
“Anyway, back on us thinking that Clifden wasn’t human.” Luna Claire said after clearing her throat and bringing us back on track. “Aside from not having a scent, he can also tell whenever someone is lying to him or hiding something from him like he can hear their heartbeats and pulse quickening. As he grew up though, our doubts started disappearing because he didn’t shift at 16 and hadn’t said anything about sparks whenever he touches someone now that he’s 18. He grew up like a normal human and not possessing any supernatural characteristics.”
That is how it is for us werewolves, we first shift at 16 and then we only find our mates at the age of 18. Phoebe and Garreth are both 18-year-old which is why Phoebe already found her mate back at the pack, while Garreth hasn’t seen his yet. As for me, I’m only 17, turning 18 in 4 months. I am actually dreading finding my mate because when the mate bond hits you, you would almost immediately fall in love with your mate. You wouldn’t be able to fight the strong mate bond and still love your mate whatever they do to you.
I refocused on the conversation around me again and hear Alpha Paul order his Beta and Gamma to prepare for the Ceremony of us becoming Co-Alpha’s. Luna Claire, Beta Lara, and Gamma Sharon are the ones assigned to handle our enrollment to the same school their kids and Clif is studying at. The three women are also organizing a house for us to stay in. They actually offered us to live in the pack house because we are now also ranked wolves of the pack but of course, we declined. We are surprised at how easy things are going, especially from the moment we said that Clifden is the one who suggested their town. After the hour-long tour around the pack house, in courtesy of Lauren and Kurt. The three of us are now alone outside because Luna Claire came back about 5 minutes ago with the other two ranked females and told us to wait for them outside. It’s kinda sketchy actually, because when they came back from assigning a house for us to live in, Luna Claire is wiggling her eyebrows at me while the other two are grinning widely.
“Wow. I can’t believe that we tried so hard not to bring up Clifden’s name because we’re scared of him getting hurt.” Garreth said while staring at the sky. “It ended up that mentioning his name is actually going to make it easier for us.”
“About that,” I started, unsure because I know they’re going to tease me about it. “protecting Clifden, I mean. Do you guys also feel like your wolves are overprotective of him?”
“Now that you mention it, my wolf does feel like that. It keeps on whimpering at the thought of Clifden getting hurt.” Garreth admitted, the tips of his ears turning red.
“This would have been a perfect time to tease Garreth’s sexuality,” Phoebe teasingly said at my Beta who is scowling at her. ”but I can’t do that. Because my wolf does feel the same way. I don’t really know why though.” She added which made us all sigh.
“Shane…” Phoebe started, making me nervous. “Is it just overprotectiveness you feel? Because when we first met Clifden and I touched his arms and chest, you pushed me back in my seat.”
“And what are you implying, huh?” I asked, my heart beating faster. “I pushed you because you’re being too shameless.”
“It’s not because you don’t want me touching Clifden?”
“No...? Of course, not.” I answered, a bit unsure this time because the thought of anyone touching Clifden is making my wolf growl.
“Why are you asking her this?” Garreth finally asked.
“Because during that time she pushed me back on my chair… her eyes were black. So technically, it wasn’t Shane, but her wolf who pushed me back.” Phoebe said, seriously looking at my eyes. “I don’t think ‘protective’ is the right word to describe what your wolf feels for him, Shane. I think the word that would be more appropriate is ‘possessive’”
Garreth suddenly gasped and slowly stood, “Wait, you’re AN Alpha.” He said looking at us, as if he figured out the answer already. “That means, there is a huge possibility that Clifden is you---”
Whatever Garreth is about to say got cut off when a car driven by the ranked females came. He immediately bit his lip, not wanting to let anyone else know about our conversation. After realizing this, Phoebe and I started walking to the car and got in it with Garreth following behind. Clifden is my what? Does he really need to be cut off on that part?
A week has passed since the meeting and the talk about Clifden and up until now, I hadn’t asked Garreth what he was about to say that day. Phoebe keeps asking him what he meant to say back then, but he keeps on saying that he will only continue if I’m the one who asked him. I keep on shaking my head and telling Phoebe that I don’t want to know or that I’m busy. But the truth is, I already have a clue what he was about to say, I’m just scared for it to be confirmed. Its actually easy to figure out what the heck Clifden is to me if you take everything into consideration. How possessive my wolf is when it comes to him, how protective my Gamma and Beta’s wolf are about his well-being, how he’s kinda attracted to me even though we just met and that Phoebe’s prettier than me, and also the fact that he’s 18 already. Its all pointing to one thing, one thing that I’m scared about. It’s the possibility that… Clifden is…
Clifden is my mate.
