Chapter 1

2407 Words
Shane’s POV I was jolted awake when someone touched my shoulder and prepared myself to shift and growled at the person who touched me, but immediately stopped and closed my eyes when I realized who it was. “Whoa, whoa, whoa, calm down Shane. It’s just me, Garreth, you’re loyal and extremely hot Beta.” He said while looking around to see if someone saw me nearly shift. I sighed then dropped my head onto the van’s headrest. “Sorry to startle you like that, by the way. I mean, we may not understand what you’re going through, but we do know that you’re stressed by all that’s happened.” “Which is why we come bearing gifts.” The girl beside him, Phoebe, said, raising two bottles of water and showing them to me. “Guys, you don’t have to apologize for something that wasn’t your fault. We have all lost the people we care about, so that is not enough reason for me to snap at both of you and almost reveal the supernatural world to everyone” I said, looking at them apologetically. “Still, I feel like you’re the one stressed the most because even if we did lose the few people we care about, at least our parents didn’t have a plan to kill either one of us.” Phoebe said while whispering the last part, making Garreth elbow her sides and give her the ‘shut up’ look. “Ow! What!? It needs to be addressed anyway, so it’s better to be addressed now than later, right?” She argued while handing me one of the water bottles she’s holding. Garreth was about to argue back but I cut him off, “It’s okay, she’s right anyway.” Phoebe stuck her tongue out at her, then went around the van to sit in the passenger’s seat while Garreth leaned onto the window. “Fine, but before you say anything, don’t you dare apologize again,” he said after sighing. “To be fair, an apology is needed. I mean, you were supposed to be the Beta of our pack but you dropped the title just so you could run away with us.” I said, which made him throw up his hands. “Oh my god, Shane. How many times do I have to tell you that if you weren’t going to be the Alpha of the pack, then I don’t even want that damn title. I mean, Phoebe and I swore that you are the only Alpha we’re going to recognize, right?” he said, directing the question to Phoebe, to which she nodded. “Only you, not anyone else and definitely not your prick older brother. No offense, but he’s scary and creepy as hell and that comes from this girl, me, who lives and breathes for horror movies and isn’t scared of them one bit.” She said while gesturing at herself. “And also, if there’s someone here who misses someone back in the pack, it’s definitely Phoebe and her mate Mark,” Garreth said, teasingly while wiggling his eyebrows at Phoebe. “Eww! Oh my god, Garreth! Do you f*****g hear how disgusting you are right now!?” she said while literally shuddering. “I don’t even get why anyone would like an asshole like that guy. I mean, I get that he’s pleasant in the eyes, but other than that, he has nothing else except that he’s arrogant, sexist and that he has d**k the size of a toothpick.” I laughed at what she said last while Garreth scrunched his face and said “Phoebe, please, I never want a mental image of my twin’s d**k. However, I still want the tea for what happened that evening, but please, no more description of any private parts of my twin, ok?” He begged Phoebe. “Seriously though, who in the right mind would have s*x with him and think that he’s going to change because of that? If you look at the definition of man w***e in a dictionary, you see his name and picture on it. Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw ALL of our siblings’ names on it. I really don’t get how boys think.” She added with disgust on her face. What she said is true, Phoebe’s younger brother, my older brother and Garreth’s two younger brothers and his twin can all be described as man w***es. They just pass girls from one another when they’re done with them. I even heard my brother talking on the phone with Phoebe’s brother about the thr**s**e they did, and he said that they should do it again, just how disgusting is that, right? “To be honest, if it weren’t for the fact that you and Mark look like a carbon copy of each other, I would have believed you were adopted.” I told him while smiling. “That’s a good thing, right?” he asked me, uncertainly. “Of course, it’s a good thing. The fact that you’re probably the only guy I know who is the same age as us and hasn’t had any s****l i*********e yet is amazing as it is already.” I told him. Especially because we’re werewolves, and werewolves are known for their insane appetite for s*x and it’s actually harder for guys to resist the urge to satisfy their s*x appetite. I know for a fact that there are a lot of girls throwing themselves at Garreth because, aside from the fact that he’s good-looking, he is also supposed to be the Beta of the pack, but he still manages to resist the temptation and stop the girls’ advances on him. “Wait, you thought he’s adopted?” Phoebe asked me and I nodded. “Because I actually thought he's gay.” She said and Garreth choked on the water he’s drinking, and I immediately looked at him for confirmation. I mean, even if he’s straight or gay, it won’t really change our relationship because all three of us grew up together and became each other’s siblings more than our actual ones. “What the heck are you talking about? I’m not gay. I’m just waiting for my mate.” he defended himself. “Why do you sound defensive then?” she pressed on. “Because you’re accusing me of something I’m not!” Garreth said defensively again. “Whoa, daddy chill. It’s not a crime to be gay, you know, and we will accept you whoever you choose to b---” They continued to bicker about Garreth being gay or not, but my mind wandered on the night of our escape and that brown wolf I killed. I didn’t even know who it was or where it lived or what would happen to its family. I only know one thing, and it’s that whoever is that wolf’s family, they’re going to have a hard time because in our pack, it’s the male who is important. Males can go to school, train to be warriors, have a job and even have more than one wife as long as he can support them and give them a roof over their heads. The mate thing and mate bond stopped being important to my pack ever since their Luna or my mom died from a rogue attack when I was 8. According to the stories, she died while fighting rouges valiantly to protect our pack, so when she died, my dad made a new rule that females aren’t allowed to train or even study anymore and should only be housewives from then on. It was my father’s way of protecting his people from suffering the same fate he did. However, as years passed by and he was not yet moving on, he became a drunk and he would take women home every night. When he finds someone he like, he will keep her and marry her. But that didn’t stop my dad from bringing more girls home when he found someone he likes again, so he added the rule about males being able to have multiple wives as long as the male can support the family. As time went on, the rules that were being added became more in favor of the males of the pack and disrespecting the female members of it. That’s why almost every girl in our pack is married, but almost none of the boys are marked, because the only guys who were marked were the ones who still believed in the mate bond and wanted to stay loyal to their mates. All of those were the reasons why Garreth, Phoebe and I made a promise in my mother’s grave that when dad steps down from his position, I would challenge my older brother for it. After I win, I would choose Garreth and Phoebe as my Beta and Gamma, respectively. And of course, since I picked a female Gamma, there is going to be an issue, because even if she is the eldest daughter of the previous Gamma, she’s still a girl, and by now, I think it’s already obvious that my pack is full of misogynistic pigs. We’ve always been certain that we'd win against our older brothers anyway, because Garreth has been training us secretly about everything he’s been taught about fighting so we can fend for ourselves too. It’s a good plan with only one big problem in the way; my father’s approval of me being the Alpha of the pack. As expected, he didn’t agree with it and was angry that I literally made my older brother beg and concede during the challenge for position in front of the Elders and the whole pack. What I didn’t expect was that they would plan to kill or sell me off to another pack. Thinking about it now, I should have expected it because the moment my mom died, my dad also lost the marbles in his head. I remember being in our treehouse hideout with Garreth and waiting for Phoebe before we ate our lunch, but when she came, she practically leapt up to the tree because she’s in a hurry. She said that her parents had been called to a meeting, so her mother ordered her to make teas and coffees for the members of the meeting and after she brought the refreshments, she overheard my dad say that they needed a plan to kill me because I humiliated his son, my older brother, in front of everyone. She said that it wasn’t just my and her parents, Garreth’s parents were also there, and they just stood there and agreed to their Alpha's plan to murder me. She said that their plan was to put wolfsbane on my food at dinner later tonight to weaken me and then bring me out for public execution. And the smart girl that she is, Phoebe, actually managed to record more than half of the conversation. We still don’t know what to do with the recording as of the moment, but we still keep it in case we need it in the future. After Phoebe revealed all of that, I remember her and Garreth discussing plans on how to escape. I even asked them if they plan to come with me and why I have to escape when we can just tell the Elders about it. And they said that it was because they had no way of knowing who else was in on the plan, so we couldn’t risk going to the Elders. We immediately planned that Phoebe would be the one responsible for the escape getaway. Garreth is for stealing some money we can use, while my job is to find a way out of the dinner I’m required to go because, aside from its MY ‘Alpha Ceremony’, it’s also a way to find someone who would want to buy me from them(our parents plan too if they didn’t succeed with murdering me). And what happened after is just history up until the present. I was dragged away from my thoughts when Garreth banged his head on the door I’m leaning on. “I’m so hungry! It’s been three days since we had a proper meal!” he said a little bit louder than necessary. I was about to say something, but something brought my attention back to the convenience store we were parked in and when I looked, my chocolate brown eyes locked with an ocean blue one just a second before the owner of the eyes went in. “---you understand me, right Shane?” He said while glancing at me and cutting my attention off the ocean blue-eyed guy. “Yah, of course I understand you. I totally do.” I said quickly, trying to hide the fact that I wasn’t really listening. “You weren’t listening are you?” Phoebe said with narrowed eyes. “Of course, I am.” “Uh huh, where are we in the conversation then?” Garreth asked, raising his eyebrows at me. “We were… talking about… money?” I guessed, but it ended up sounding like a question. “So, you were listening, huh. That means you heard Garreth say he’s gay then?” Phoebe asked me. “Wait, really?” I said, shocked at the revelation and turning to look at Garreth, who is scowling at Phoebe. I was confused about why he was scowling, but when I heard the girl beside me laugh, I suddenly realized why. “He didn’t say anything about being gay, did he?” I asked the smiling girl beside me. “No, we weren’t in that part of the conversation, and he hadn’t confirmed whether he’s gay or not.” “There’s nothing to confirm because I’m straight, OK?” “Anywayyy, enough talk about Garreth’s sexuality. Now that we’ve proven you weren’t listening to us, I’m now curious what caught your attention and got you distracted in the first place. Was it a guy? Is he hot?” Phoebe asked shamelessly. “Well, I honestly didn’t get to see him clearly, but… he’s not bad, I guess” I told Phoebe while remembering the way his eyes lit up when our eyes locked on each other. Am I just imagining that? I shook my head a little to clear it up. “I’m just not bad?”
