Chapter 17

-Eva Brooks- "Eva, where are you right now? I'm coming over to the police station to take you home," Mom said, and I was shocked, wondering if I was getting called by a wrong number. But it was my mother's voice and her number too. "Mom, I thought you disowned me, and you and Dad went further to announce that I am no longer your daughter?" I asked her, shocked, as I couldn't believe my ears. "Eva, your dad and I only overreacted. But we have learned our lesson now. You will always be our daughter. Our precious baby. Are you at the police station now? I heard you got released. So I'm coming over to take you home," Mom said, and I was stunned for a moment. "Mom, you don't have to come to the police station. Cruz is coming over to pick me up and take me home," I told her, and she said, "I still want to see you. If I don't come to see you, how will you know that I care about you? Tell Cruz to wait for me." "Alright," I said, hearing the sound of the car engine, and I knew that my mother was on the road. Looking at the car park as I waited for my brother's arrival, a few minutes later, a red sports car drove into the police station grounds and parked. Cruz emerged as he ran out of the car and rushed up to meet me. He was dressed in a black shirt and trousers. His messy blonde hair was tousled by the evening wind as he rushed up to meet me. "Eva, you're truly released. Who granted your bail?" Cruz asked as he came forward and hugged my shoulders. "I don't know. Are you for real that it's not you? Jacob called me and informed me just now that he had been paid off the amount he claimed that I owed him," I said calmly, and Cruz asked, "For real? But who could have paid Jacob the money? Or is it the man who you slept with last night? He could be among the elites in this city. Eva, are you sure you don't know who the man is?" Cruz peered at my face, wanting me to tell him the truth. But I looked away and shook my head. "I have no idea who the man is," I lied smoothly, and Cruz sighed. "Eva, why do I have a feeling that you don't want to tell me who the man is and you know who you slept with?" Cruz asked, but I refused to budge. "I don't know him," I lied again, and Cruz sighed, "Alright." Just then, my mother's black car drove into the police vicinity and parked. Mom got out of the car, wearing a green dress and black shoes, and she rushed up to meet us. "Eva, my daughter!" Mom exclaimed, shocking my brother and me as she ran up to envelop me in a warm hug. "Mom, good evening," I said, shocked by the sudden hug, and she smiled, letting go of me as she looked from me to Cruz. "Evening, Eva. What are you both doing and discussing here? Come on, let's go home. You don't have to go with Cruz to avoid Maddison insulting you. You're my daughter," Mom said with a sweet voice, and I looked at her face in shock, wondering if I was dreaming. However, I snatched my hand away from my mother's hand as I crossed my arms around my chest and pouted my pink lips. "Mom, you banished me from your house. Do you remember?" I asked, and she frowned and tried to come up with her explanation. "Eva, it's not like I banished you. You know, after Jacob withdrew his funds from your father's loan company, it affected us. But this evening, a man called and said that he was going to credit us with 5 million, and we shouldn't hold the grudge against you," Mom said, to which I gasped. "What? A man who? Do you have his contact?" I asked Mom, and she replied, "Yes, I do. But I am nervous to call him back. After receiving the cash transfer, I called you first," Mom said, and I looked at her with disbelief. "Mom, so if the person hadn't transferred the money, you wouldn't have taken me back as your daughter?" I asked her sadly, shocked by her behavior, and she fidgeted with her fingers as she tried to apologize. "Eva, it's not like that. I was about to call you, but you know that if I don't get the money from the Stone Group, our company will crumble, and we will be left with nothing. Please, forgive your dad and me," Mom begged as she knelt down, and I sighed. "Just get up first. I don't know who sent you the money, but I would like to see whoever the person is and thank the person by myself," I said, to which Mom agreed, "Of course. You need to thank the person." "Alright," I replied, to which Mom brought out her phone and made a call. The call rang before the man answered the call. "Hello, who is this?" The deep voice asked, to which Mom cleared her throat and replied, "Um, this is Mrs. Brooks. You called me earlier; do you remember?" "Yeah. I did. How may I help you?" "Well, I'm at the police station now, and my daughter is here to thank you for your kind help to us," Mom said, to which the man replied, "Oh, don't worry, Madam. I am one of your daughter's secret admirers. And I don't want her to rot in jail when I genuinely like her." "Oh, can we meet and thank you appropriately? My daughter claims that she doesn't know you," Mom said, to which the man cleared his throat and replied, "I am sorry, Madam. I don't think that's important. Your daughter doesn't have to worry about meeting me or worry about the money. Just go on with your lives," the man said, and Mom asked with a softer voice, "Are you sure? We would like to thank you well. My daughter is single too, in case you want to marry her." "What? Mom!" I looked at her face furiously, as I couldn't believe that she was pushing me into another marriage. Jacob and I just broke up, and Mom was already planning to set me up with a total stranger. "No need, Ma. Your daughter deserves to marry whoever she loves and not me. Don't worry about that. I won't bother your daughter. Take care," the man said, before the phone call ended.
