“I would rather spend one lifetime with you, than face all the ages of this world alone.” – J.R.R. Tolkien
"Oh my god! You are not dead! " Emily screamed as soon as Mia entered the boutique "I swear I was this close to calling the police." Showing her a tipsy gap in between her newly painted pink fingernails.
"I know, I am sorry I overslept. Has anyone came to collect the dresses on behalf of Mr Fitz?" Mia asked as she removed her jacket and placed it on the rack behind.
"He called like 3 times, the first two times I told him that you were on your way and the third time I had to give him your number because he was furious and wanted to talk to you. But I guess he did not get through to you because he called again for the 4th time and was having the worst day of his life."
"Oh god, how can I let this happen?" Mia babbled to herself "He was our biggest client of the year "She exclaimed rubbing her template.
"I am sorry Mia I did everything I could" Emily expressed as she placed a hand on Mia’s shoulder to console her. This was going to cost her a fortune.
"I know you did, that is why I feel even more of a failure now. "I am still going to give this one last try though, pack me the dress and I will take that to him."
"I do not think that is necessary, he is coming over here in li –"
"Where the hell is she?! "Mia heard someone scream as the boutique door opened. Mr Fitz walked in with a scowl on his face and frustration clear on his forehead. This was not going to end well.
"Mr Fitz! Hi, I am so sorry we could not get to you on time we we-"
"Do you know how much you have cost me? I wanted to have this dress to give to my investor’s daughter as a gift and I promised him it will be done by today. So, what the f**k happened to that dress?" He shouted yet again, coming in real proximity with Mia.
"I apologize look –"
"This is your boutique, isn’t it?" He continued without letting Mia complete "What a waste of space honestly, you just cost me a million-dollar deal, how do you plan on paying that back exactly?"
"Million dollars for a dress? I think you are getting ahead of yourself here" Emily uttered, as she was standing right behind Mia.
"Emily!" She hissed looking back at her "I am so sorry for the miscommunication. Is there some sort of way we can come to a middle ground?" Mia asked nicely, trying to calm him down.
"There is nothing that can be done now, pay me back a million-dollar and I would be out of your hair."
"To be fair it was not worth a million, but we can compensate something –"
"Did I ask for anything else?" He spoke again closing the little distance they had between them. Mia wanted to choke on his scent. He smelled like cheap perfume, cigarettes, and liquor.
"Okay I think you need to get out, otherwise I will have to call 911," Mia exclaimed indicating Emily to keep her phone at the ready.
"You b***h!" Mia squeaked as he grabbed her by her hair and pulled her roughly to the corner. "I am going to teach you some manners! "He continued as he banged Mia’s head to the wall next to her. She could hear Emily shouting as she was trying to call someone on the phone. It was all happening so fast that she couldn’t even figure out most of it. All she should see was someone entering through the door and ripping the guy away from her in a swift motion.
"Xavier," She whispered as she dropped unconscious on the spot.
"You Motherfucker!" Xavier punched the guy too many times to count for. At this point, he was laying on the ground with a bloody nose and all Xavier wanted to do was go on. He hurt her and all he was seeing was red.
"Xavier! Xavier! She is not moving, oh my god. Mia! Wake up!" Emily sobbed sitting right beside Mia. "I called 911 they are on their way!" As if realisation hit Xavier again, he got off the man and got alongside Mia.
"Mia? Can you hear me?" He asked as he took her hands in his and kissed them lightly. He needed to know if she was okay. He did not know why, but it was all too much. He could not see her hurt.
Finally, he could hear the sirens from the distance, indicating help was here. It was in a long time before he realised what was happening. It was hurting him that she was in pain, it felt like someone took out his heart and ripped it in front of him.
"Please be okay" Was all he could whisper before he was approached by the paramedics.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Alright, how many fingers can you see?"
"2"
"Okay, and how many now?"
"You haven’t moved any fingers, so still 2"
"Alright then, you can rest here tonight if you want otherwise, you are free to go". The doctor, whose name read Amar on his tag asserted.
"Thanks, Doc, anybody here to get me?" Mia asked as she got herself to sit on the bed with her back against the head of the bed. She was not sure how long she has been out; she planned to ask Emily all about what happened when she dropped her off home.
"Oh yeah, I think your boyfriend is out there waiting for you. He has been here the whole time you were brought in; I am going to send him in." He answered and walked out without waiting for an answer, not that Mia had any strength left to ask any questions anyways.
"Mia" She heard as Xavier walked into the poorly lightened room, he was wearing the same clothes he had on before he dropped her off. His hair was messed up and there was a blood stain on his shirt. Gosh, it hurt her to think how pretty he was.
"Hey, when did you get here?" Mia asked as he settled himself in front of her. He did not answer right away, for a split second, he just looked at her face as if he were searching for some hidden scar. When he was satisfied that he did not find anything he finally looked into her eyes. He had the most gorgeous eyes she has ever seen. She could not explain that if it was the medicine or the head injury but right now all she wanted to do was just stare at him and have him stare right back at her.
"Are you ready to go home?" He finally asked, offering her his hand all without breaking the eye contact. Without knowing what she was doing she gave him her hand and slightly nodded. In a swift motion, he got her upstanding, just too close to him than she expected. He took a hot breath close to her ears. His body felt so close to her that it seemed like he was partly hugging her, with his one hand slightly touching her waist and the other one holding her hand to steady her.
"You had me so worried," he said before his arms went around her waist, pulling her in towards him completely leaving no gap in between them. He was hugging her now, tightly and perfectly.
Mia did not know what to do, she had never seen him like this. Of course, she knew there was some tension between them but this, it felt intimate, it felt special; he felt special. Right at that moment, she could feel all his emotions as he hugged her tightly as if he were scared to let go as if at any moment she would fall off and will never be found again.
She wanted to hug him back, have his cologne all over her, she wanted to feel all his emotions and let him know that she heard him, understood him and he did not even need words to express them, she gets it, but how could she do that when she didn't even know half of who he was? No matter how much she wanted to push away the thought, this was not it. She did not get all this that was happening, and she just could not hug him back.
"Mia –"
"I want to go home" She answered pulling back from him. She could not do this, not today.
"Okay" Xavier answered without arguing any further. He shifted a bit so that she could walk ahead of him. As if waiting for the opportunity she sprinted from the room, she knew he was following her, but she wanted to getaway. Too many emotions, too many feelings, for all she remembered she thought she had left all this behind.
"Mia wait up" She didn’t, she walked out the hospital door where she could see her car parked in the parking lot. She waited for him to come to the car so that she could go home.
She didn’t even spare him a glance when they reached her place, she just went running towards her bedroom afraid that he might catch up with her and ask her questions she didn’t even know the answers to. Questions that she was still asking herself.
