Sam Hunter
“Sam, are you sure you are not going to spare her? I think she genuinely loves you, you don’t need to do this!” a man in a white lab coat tried to persuade Sam. “HAHAHA! John, do you think I love her? Did you forget that she is a secret agent tasked to capture us?” Sam's dark brown eyes looked at the man in the coat sharply. His figure raised from his seat as he took a knife from the table. His strong figure and sharp face made others hardly believe that he was a scientist that did research every day. “I only date her so we know what the authority is up to and so we can evade capture, that is all. This is the first time we kill people, right? We have swindled thousands of people and killed a dozen innocent people, so what? She is just another one of these people,” he said without expression. The man in white blocked his path, “Why did you suddenly do this? Won’t this jeopardise our cover? Don’t tell me this is because she turned out to be that man’s sister?” Sam gritted his teeth, “It has everything to do with him! That man had turned everyone against me! Just because my early day was not that bright, he told everyone that I took other’s research as mine!” “He made everyone believe it was not my own accomplishment! I was just a step away from finishing my research, but he ruined everything for me!” he exploded. “It’s not his fault, Sam! They found proof that you used a living person for your experiment! You should have known that they will find out sooner or later! Even from the beginning, to create a living AI is impossible!” the man exploded back at him. “It’s their fault, John! Zero and the others are the one who did this to us! His sister is just the beginning, I will prove to him that I can finish this project even though we need to start over since they took all of our research away.” He pushed the man aside and went to the room, madness could be seen in his eyes. The room was dark, Sam turned on the light, revealing a beautiful girl, or at least the previously beautiful girl, that was tied to a chair. She was looking soullessly at the door. Her pupils constricted from the sudden light, but she remained unresponsive. “How is your rest, Lana?” Sam let out a gentle voice that would make people doubt if he was the same cruel person that walked into the room. The girl’s eyes focused, after a few seconds reorienting herself, she recognized the person before her, his black hair and sharp face, the person she dated for the last two years and the love of her life. “Teo! Teo! You are back! I knew that guy in a lab coat must have brainwashed you! I miss you Teo,” hope appeared in her eyes. Cruel and sadistic smile could not help but form on his face as he saw her reaction when he used the persona he used to date her. “You seriously believe such a thing? Hahaha! You are blinded by your feeling, Lana! How many times do I need to tell you before you understand?” he sneered at her. “I am Sam, Sam Hunter! The same person you have been hunting for the last three years! Teo is just the name I used to fool you!” he told her. Despair could be seen on her face. She was on the brink of breaking into madness, but she clung to her hope. “No! Teo is a good person! I refuse to believe that all of his affection and love for me was fake! Please snap out of it! I know you are in there somewhere! Teo! Remember when you proposed to me? I didn’t get the chance to reply just—“ She was going to continue clinging to the hope that he was brainwashed and going to remember his true self, but the hope was destined to be a disappointment. “Enough!” he pointed his knife at her eye. It caused her to stiffen as she remembered the knife and what it had done to her. Sam had enough of her talk, he knew well that she was delusional. Almost every person he swindled would cling to hope that his promise would come true, that they didn’t lose everything, but none of their hope ever got realized. “let's talk about what part I should send to your brother next,” he grinned as she could see pure evil in his eyes. Her body trembled as her eyes locked on the knife that went down to her chest. She could still feel the pain on her wrist, even though the wound should have been closed already. “I hope he liked the hand I sent him before. He should have thanked me since I gave him a hand,” he chuckled as he made the pun. “Should I send your tongue next? You can’t bother me with your false hope that way,” he teased her. “Or should I send you eyes?” he asked, but before she could answer he answered by himself just like before. “Nah, I like your blue eyes the best. It would be a shame to send it to that jerk. That despair in your eyes every time I told you everything about us is fake is the best, I will not share it with anyone,” he said gently as he caressed her cheek with his knife. She stiffened as he could feel the knife cut her face and smell the blood that drip won her chin. “Let’s just send you head, I want to know his reaction,” he grinned and about to cut her throat but stopped midway as he could feel a strange sensation pass through him. Some kind of unfamiliar energy filled the air. When he looked at the girl, he knew that it was not only him that sensed the energy in the air. “Is the rumor really true?” he wondered as he noticed some changes around him. Mosses on the wall grew rapidly at the speed, impossible even with modern technology. When he looked at the girl, her weak and skinny body started to get rejuvenated. The wound he just opened on her cheek is already gone, even her missing arm showed signs of growing back. “This is not scientific at all!” his eyes grew wide at the things happening around him. “Teo! This is your chance! Fight back against the brainwashing while the mana is still saturating the environment!” Lana urged him. Sam ignored her and focused on the information he got, “She said mana, which probably means she knew that the rumors are true from the beginning!” For half a year, there was a rumor spreading all around the world that the world is going to change with new energy called mana saturating the world, allowing people to use magic and animals to evolve into fantasy-like settings. “The governments never clarify this rumor and some out right deny this as lunatic’s propaganda! I bet they only let few selected people know and keep it confidential so the world would not go into panic and the economy would not stop from the mass-hysteria,” he lamented. “Teo! Please!” she somehow broke her restraint and held both on his shoulder with both of her hands. “Her hand grew back!” he looked in amazement, but her repeated attempt to snap him out of the inexistent brainwashing annoyed him. “Shut up!” he pulled her by the hair and stabbed the knife through her throat. “Agh... agh...” she gagged as she tried to talk, tears well in her eyes and flow down her beautiful face. ‘I love you’ she mouthed as she could not talk. Sam rolled his eyes back before pushing the knife deeper and beheading her crudely. There was no regret or guilt in his expression. Seeing her stop moving and not heal after he cut off her head, Sam could only shake his head in disappointment. “It seems this mana thingy can only do so much, it can’t grow back a full boy or resurrect people,” he analyzed coldly. “In conclusion, this is just another type of energy and bound by rules. I just need to know the science behind it,” he thought as he carried her head toward his lab for further testing. “I think Zero will not mind if I use his sister some more before sending her head to him as a present,” he chuckled as he imagined how he would react when he saw his beloved sister’s head in a box. “Hmm... I should get rid of John too, he's starting to get on my nerves. I wonder how I should torture him before sending him on his way,” smile formed on his face. “Doing evil is the best thing to do other than research. If people hire me to replace the devil, then I might consider,” pure evil could be seen through his near-black eyes.
