THE BEGINNING OF IT ALL
oo ooh!" I breathed anxiously.
Every sound that was coming from those passing by sounded like a muted soundtrack. For about 30 minutes, it was just me and my thoughts. It was just me reminding myself that I'd studied enough to crush this examination script in front of me.
Gradually, the memory of the previous night began to invade my mind.
I began studying at 6:00 in the morning. I skipped breakfast because I don't eat well when I am tensed.
I remember taking a warm bath with my favorite soap, "Papaya," That soap gives me that cool icy feeling. After taking a shower, I began to study. Still, on my first subject at 12:00 p.m., I was so tensed.
"God, I am not going to be able to revise everything before tomorrow morning..." I said to myself, being overwhelmed with the fear of failure.
As I was about to break down, my mum walked in.
Her eyebrows were down.
"You've been studying since... I don't know, last year, and you are still studying," she said, frowning.
"Don't worry, Mum. I am fine."
"This is not about you being fine with it. I am not fine with it."
"I'm telling you, it's cool, Mum."
"No, it's not. You know what? I am taking these books..."
She literally grabbed all my books from my reading table and stormed out of my room.
Honestly, I was a little bit relieved—but just a little bit.
The thing is, my mum thinks that since I heard about this exam, I have been a total study freak, and she's not way off.
I took a break from my reading posture and walked to my bed. Lying down made me feel the parts of my body that I couldn't feel before.
"Uh," I moaned with satisfaction.
The bed felt so comfortable and cozy. I constantly switched positions, trying to sink more into the comfy bed like it was hollow.
Within minutes, I drifted off to sleep.
"Bzzz, Bzzz."
I remember my alarm buzzing loudly that day.
I jumped out of bed as my alarm buzzed.
"Oh my gosh! That was my 8 p.m. alarm, which meant I had just slept for the rest of the day, and I hadn't even entered my next subject. I had just six core subjects to focus on for the exams, and I know that I have been aware of this exam for months, but I have only been on one subject.
I was so confused and nervous, so I didn't know what to do. If I had a reading buddy, it would have been so easy for me.
"Miss Estella, you have limited time, and I suggest you use it like it's your last..."
And just like that, I was back to reality.
I didn't know the answer to a single question on the question paper. My hands started to sweat, and my heart started racing. The room suddenly became hot. I started feeling emotions rushing in. I wanted to cry.
