TWENTY-ONE Tooms and Tony stood at the side of the road, looking at the broken safety barrier, beyond the swell of the Hudson River. They had gotten a call from the Coast Guard about reports of a car that had crashed into the river. A witness had seen the car crash occurred after a bout of erratic driving. When the police had taken the witness’ statement, she had described the driver. That description sounded like the missing guard. Earlier that day, Tony had put out a “Be on the Lookout” or BOLO alert for the guard, which the Coast Guard and uniforms had reacted to. As they stood at the roadside embankment, they watched the divers go down into the dank waters of the Hudson. Tooms wasn’t sure they would find anything because the river wasn’t the cleanest.
