As was his habit, Geoff walked different routes with his son for the next few nights and didn't pass by the Walker's cottage until later that week. Olive had been baking in the afternoon and now Geoff carried a cherry cake wrapped in brown paper as he set off up the hill. Frank was already waiting at the gate, his bulky frame plainly visible from the narrow lane and, as Geoff drew near, Godfrey started toddling faster to where the large man stood with outstretched arms. “Evening”, grinned Frank cheerfully, “Sorry I missed you the other night, Matilda wasn't well so I decided to sit with her until she felt better.
