Introduction
I've had my wolf ever since I could see light. My dreams show me what life was like before the nightmare of the s*******r of my pack and family.
It always started in the safety of the den. Mother was a large rustic red wolf with black and white socks. She always kept reminding us to stay inside the den. Father's wolf was pepper gray, his scent smelled of pine and honeysuckle. He would bring home fresh meat from the hunt.
My pack consisted of my parents, three brothers, my father's two sisters, and my mother's mother (Nana). Outside the den, you had other creatures from days of old; centaurs, werewolves, lycans, vampires, humans, fae, dragons, and us dire-wolves. They usually kept to themselves from all the past wars. Each species had its territory it kept to. Very few traveled elsewhere.
I could stay in this dream forever and never wake up, happy and content with my family. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. Thus, the nightmare begins.
The smell of hot spices wafts into the den, choking me awake. Whimpering, I snuggle close to my brothers. "Men!" shouted my mother, her growl was fierce. It was just Mother and Nana, they began to move us to the back of the den (there was an escape route just in case). Father was still gone with his sisters hunting. Mother told Nana to take me and run.
Mother ear piercing howl calling her mate to her. Nana picked me up by my scruff and exited through the back. "Be quiet and still my sunshine," Nana whispered to me. Nana ran as fast and far as she could, she was an elder wolf. We were far from the den, I couldn't hear mother fighting or my brothers growling.
Nana suddenly let out a cry of pain and fell to the ground hard. A bullet wound to her shoulder was deep and had her bleeding heavily. Nana looked at me with fear in her eyes, "My sunshine, shift for Nana. You need to be human for your safety." I began whimpering, I had never shifted before and was scared. "SolSkin!" Nana whispered-shouted at my wolf. "Release her, she NEEDS to be HUMAN!"
SolSkin retreated to the back of my mind, gone was my warm fur and sturdy foot pads. I now had soft pink skin and it was cold and damp. I sat by Nana crying. "Please don't leave me, Nana." Nana's ash-blond wolf looked at me and kissed her wet nose on my cheek. Her head went up, ears pricked forward then looking down at me panicked. "RUN, Run away. Go! Hurry and don't look back. Go!" Her wolf nudged me with her large head. I was crying hard. "GO NOW!" she growled out.
I was cold in my human form running through the forest. My soft pink skin cut easily and didn't keep me warm like my fur did. I ran from dawn till dusk. Nothing was familiar or felt safe, my tear-stained cheeks made my face chapted. I found a rotting tree and crawled up into it for shelter. Strange noises kept me up, and unfamiliar scents coursed through me. My eyes grew heavy and I couldn't fight sleep anymore.
I awoke to feeling warm. The scent was unfamiliar but the warmth was comforting. I peeked my eyes open to see a fox cuddled up beside me. I gently stroked his fluffy fur. I wondered if he was the guardian of these woods. Nana always spoke of forest guardians, and how they helped those in need. He stirred as I was petting him. He turned his head to me and spoke, "What is a young kit doing so far from the safety of the den?" I looked at him in shock, Nana never mentioned they could speak. "Mr. Fox, Nana told me to run and don't come back. Mother said the man was in the forest." He sat back after what I had told him. He smiled to himself, "Interesting, you understood what I asked you. Also, if Man is in the forest we must move on. Come young one, I will be your guide." He trotted forward looking back towards me waiting.
