Receiving a letter out of nowhere from the family that cut ties with me ten years ago felt suspicious. Living with a new identity and no connections to my past or people from my past, I couldn't help but to wonder how they found my location, especially my house which I kept secretive even from my staff.
Was someone spying on me? Or was I just overthinking? I was lost in my thoughts, until I heard Estelle, "Mommy, I have a day off tomorrow, can I come to the hospital with you?"
I brushed off all my thoughts and focused on her words, "Sure, baby."
"Are you sure about taking her with you?" Lucifer asked worrying about my tight schedule, "You'll be busy with checkups and surgeries, don't you think it's hard to manage both? I can take her with me, I don't think I'll be busy tomorrow."
I smiled at him trying to assure him, "Handling her isn't troublesome, don't worry, I'll look after her" he nodded and shifted his attention towards Estelle, "Well, my dear princess, how about we go have some pudding?"
"Did you bring it for me, Daddy?" she asked excitedly, He smirked showering her face with kisses, "how can I forget my daughter's words?" She clapped her hands with a giggle, look at the way he is spoiling her, "Lucifer, I told you not to feed her more sweets like this."
Lucifer raised his hand in the air breaking my words, "You're a doctor at the hospital, but at home, you're just a normal person like us, so don't stop us from having fun," with that, he left with Estelle.
These two are always the same, I can't change either of them. Everyone listens to me because I'm a doctor, but not these two.
I never dreamed of becoming a doctor until Lucifer encouraged me, if not because of him, I wouldn't have discovered my passion for this field, and now I don't regret following my passion, since I'm enjoying the privileges of my efforts.
My day starts with the chaos of waking them up and ends with watching them sleep peacefully. I smiled at them, asleep on the couch while watching a movie.
Turning off the TV, I covered them with a blanket, and returned to my room, I hid the letter safely in my closet, I'm not sure whether it is useful or not but for now I don't want this to complicate my life, so it's better to hide it.
My life is simple and plain, I don't expect any uninvited guests or situations to ruin the peace I'm enjoying.
Before I realized, it was already morning. Tired because of not sleeping well last night, I still had to pull myself out of bed and get ready for the hospital, though there were disturbing thoughts messing my mind, still I can't help but to concentrate on my work.
I hurriedly made breakfast for the three of us, Lucifer usually doesn't eat at home since he leaves early in the morning, but today he was home for breakfast, he is more pickier than Estelle.
"Sweetie, finish your breakfast quickly, Mommy is running late," I said with a smile and kiss, she nodded, Lucifer started eating breakfast, "It's delicious."
Thankfully today this picky eater is in a good mood, he continued "This evening, I'll pick you both up, let's go out for dinner together."
Estelle looked excited about dinner outside, I hummed in agreement, not wanting to ruin their excitement, "I'll make sure to wrap up my work early."
Taking Estelle along, I went to work, as soon as I reached the hospital, they surrounded me, talking about my schedule. I smiled at their enthusiasm, "Can I at least go to my cabin, or will you give me the schedule here?"
Head nurse Myra laughed while reacting to my words, "Oh dear, I'll follow you," I went to my cabin with Estelle, gesturing for her to sit on the couch, "Estelle, Mommy will look into her work, how about you play or watch something on your iPad until I get free?"
"Sure," she gave a bright smile and I looked at Myra, "Well, you can tell me my schedule now, but I hope it's not too busy today."
She chuckled showing the schedule, "It's as busy as always, you have twenty-five outpatients, five online one-on-one consultation, two surgeries in the afternoon, and evening checkup rounds as usual, for now, that's what's prepared for you madam."
"Enough?" I shook my head in disbelief, "It's too much to handle," she just passed the glass of water, "You're the top-paid and most famous doctor in the city, so you'll always be busy like this."
I didn't dare to argue since it's true, and it almost takes two months of time to get an appointment with me.
Looking at Estelle enjoying herself, I decided to start my work, only if I start now, I could finish everything by the evening before Lucifer comes. As a doctor, patience is key, but dealing with some patients, I lose my patience ending up becoming a patient.
I glanced at my daughter who was taking a nap after lunch, and asked Myra to look after Estelle until I returned back, straight four hours without break I performed surgeries.
After finishing the two surgeries, it was already evening, and my back aching very badly, when they're privileges, there'll be pains too, informing the condition of the patients to their family, the smile on their faces after hearing good news warms up my heart and makes me forget all my tiredness, I returned to the cabin, and seen Estelle still sleeping, hearing the door sound, she woke up, "Mommy, you're back?"
"Sorry, sweetie, I couldn't spend more time with you today," I apologized, caressing her cheek, she replied understanding me, "It's okay Mommy, I woke up now only."
Just then, Lia, the nurse apprentice, came in, "Doctor, it's time for the checkup rounds," I nodded tiredly, "well Lia, can you take Estelle to the canteen and get her some snacks?"
"Sure, doctor," she nodded, I sent Estelle with Lia and left my cabin for the checkup rounds.
Suddenly, my heart started beating heavily, and my body turned cold, placing a hand on my heart, I mumbled, "Is it tachycardia?"
As I was lost in my thoughts, walking straight ahead, not noticing the person in front of me until we collided, I nearly fell, but strong arms caught me and pulled me back into his embrace, the familiar scent hit my nostrils making me confused, and I looked up to thank the person who held me, only to be stunned when I heard his voice, "Isabella."
My heart, which had been pounding fast till then, seemed to stop as I managed to barely whisper, "Xavier."
