“What are you sniffing about there?” another said behind him. “I don’t see anything.”
Aurora trembled with fear as she clutched Lilith. She closed her eyes and pressed her head against Lilith’s back, whispering something as she squeezed her tighter.
“Stay calm. The trolls can't see us.”
“But they can smell us.”
“No, they smell you, not me.”
Another troll paused near them. Aurora opened her eyes and stared at its foot. She was able to smell the foul stench and it was so horrible it made her sick. Lilith told her not to vomit as the troll continued to search for the source.
“That smell.” The troll sniffed. “I know that smell.”
Another came near to do the same. “That’s the smell of a child. A female child.”
