Trial

I wanted to yell that I didn’t do it, that I was innocent, but my throat was closing up, making it harder to breathe with each passing second. The Alpha sprung from his seat and grasped my elbow, his grip on me tight as he dragged me to God knows where. This was bad. I had barely spent twenty hours in this place, and it looked like I was already headed towards an early grave. I was thankful that no one was in the halls, but word would spread soon enough, that a lowly maid had tried to poison the Alpha, and once again I would become an outcast. We arrived at a room where an old lady sat preparing a concoction, and the Alpha just shoved me on the floor in front of her. The old woman glanced at my form before, bowing her head to pay respects to him. “Treat her. She ingested poison and would be trailed later today.” Trail? I sat up, but my body felt incredibly weak. Was this the end of my tragic story? “Yes, Alpha.” The woman answered, bowing once more as he stormed out of the room. Then she turned to me, her red-rimmed glasses shielding aging eyes. “You must be the new maid.” She noted, bending to help me to a seat, her wrinkled hands holding more strength than they appeared. My chest heaved, and the world spun around me. I wished the Alpha had just let the poison kill me. Why would he treat me just to put me on trial, when the obvious punishment for targeting him would be death? The old woman worked smartly, and soon she held a bottle of the remedy to my lips, but I pressed my lips tight, choosing to die by poison rather than to be humiliated and later killed. “Oh dear.” She shook her head at me. “Aren’t you stubborn.” Setting the bottle aside, the old woman heaved out a sigh as she sat across from me, bringing out a knitting kit to work on the half-done sweater on her lap. “The poison won’t kill you if that’s what you’re hoping for.” She casually said, her hands expertly spinning the needles and the yarn. “It’s an irritant, and you only have those symptoms because you’re an Omega, but to anyone else, it would only give them a mild rash.” I pondered on her words, the pieces coming together. With a grunt I forced myself to sit up, then I reached for the bottle and gulped down its contents. Soon I felt my throats open up, and the world around me stopped spinning. The antidote had worked wonders, healing me in an instant. “Does that mean…..” I started carefully, my voice hoarse. “Someone intentionally put poison in the meal knowing the Alpha would notice and force me to eat it?” The woman shrugged her shoulders. “It’s possible. But don’t say I told you that.” My mouth fell open in shock. Why? Why would someone do such a thing? I had only just arrived at the pack, and it seemed like I had already made enemies. “What’s going to happen to me now?” I couldn’t help but ask. The old woman glanced at me, then she shook her head again. “That depends on the mood of the Alpha dear, but he is not a forgiving man. Never has been.” I let out a shaky breath, chewing on my bottom lip as my mind raced on how to prove my innocence. “What is this irritant made of ma’am?” “Ma’am?” She looked at me as if I had given her the most atrocious insult in the world. “Call me Betty, I’m not that old.” I blinked at her casual tone, as I wasn’t used to talking to anyone so freely, not even my parents. “Uhm…okay…Betty, can you please tell me what the irritant is made of?” Betty nodded, then she pointed to the window sill, where some pots of flowers and plants were arranged. “You see those lilac flowers there?” She began, “The irritant is gotten from the petals, they can be crushed into powder to do the trick” I nodded, narrowing my eyes at the said flower. It was beautiful, but I felt as if I had seen it somewhere before. I got up from my seat and reached for the pot, taking a sniff of the petals. It was spicy yet sweet. Wait….. Spicy yet sweet….. My eyes widened in realization and I looked up at Betty who held a knowing smile. “Ready for your trail?” **** The trial is held in a large hall, with Alpha Alexandy seated at the head of the room. The pack members circled us, eager to see me punished. But I don’t blame them, since I was accused of trying to poison their Alpha, it was a normal reaction. I tried to remain calm despite the numerous eyes on me, their gazes holding a mix of curiosity and hostility. The Alpha’s eyes narrowed as I stood before him, seeing that I was already fully healed. “You have ten minutes to plead your innocence before I give my verdict Omega.” I swallowed hard, taking a deep breath to calm my nerves. “I prove not guilty.” Alexander arched a brow at me, but I stood my ground. “And I have evidence to back my claim.” I swear I could see a hint of a smile on his face, amusement flashing in his blue eyes. “Do you now?” “Yes.” I nodded, reaching into my pocket to bring out the flower from Betty’s small garden. I held it up for everyone to see, my chest heaving. “This is the flower the poison was extracted from, as confirmed by the pack healer. And she assured me that it only grew in her office as it was very rare, but earlier today I saw it on a fellow pack member.” Now he no longer hid his grin. It held no humor, but a frightening chill that spelled nothing but trouble. “Who’s this pack member?” I narrowed my eyes, my gaze filtering through the crowd. “The only pack member I interacted with shortly before serving the Alpha’s meal.” I found her, her expression sacred and wary. “Female member Sarah.” The crowd gasped in shock, and the jury ordered Sarah to step forward, and she did, her teeth chattering as she sent me a side glare. It was a wild guess, but it was like I was right in the end. “Alpha as you can see, the flower I hold is the same one on her headpiece and—-” “Enough.” He held out a hand to silence me, and I pressed my lips into a straight line, leaving everything in the moon goddess’s hands now. Alpha Alexander stood from his seat and approached us, his intense gaze never leaving our forms, but he faced Sarah first, plucking a flower from her headpiece to compare to mine. It was then he noticed that some were missing. “I will make my verdict.” He announced, but then Sarah dropped to her knees and started to beg for mercy, saying she did what she did because I took her position. “Please have mercy Alpha!” I heaved out a sigh of relief, knowing that I had successfully proved my innocence, but then the Alpha called out to me. “Omega.” I was taken aback as he reached into his coat and tossed me something. I struggled to catch it, but then my eyes rounded in shock as I saw that it was a gun. My blood ran cold, and I dropped it like it was hot coal. What did he expect me to do with this? The Alpha chuckled at my expense, the he bent to pick the gun himself. I gasped as he drew me close to him with lightning speed, and before I knew it, I had my back pressed against his chest, while he placed the gun in my hands once more, guiding them to aim directly at Sarah’s head. “Here is my verdict.” He repeated, his breath tickling my ear and leaving goosebumps on its trail. “Kill her.”
