The Choice

I froze, my fingers trembling against the gun. Cold sweat gathered at the back of my neck, a huge contrast to the Alpha’s hot breath fanning against my ear, reminding me of the danger that lurked if I didn’t heed his demand. “Kill her.” He repeated, his tone dark yet inviting like a devil taunting you to oblivion. I couldn’t think straight, feeling a wave of nausea wash over me. My breathing soon became uneven, making it harder to focus on the task at hand. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t kill her, not with these fragile hands. I just couldn’t fathom the thought of taking someone’s life, no matter what they had done. But the Alpha was persistent, his grip on me tightening as he urged me to pull the trigger. “Don’t make me repeat myself Omega.” He growled. I squeezed my eyes shut, opening it to see Sarah’s pleading eyes. It looked like she had accepted her fate, but her shoulders trembled violently, her face pale as she silently begged for mercy. At that moment, I was reminded of how I had fallen to my knees to beg Leo to stay. Was this how I looked to him, desperate to cling to feeble hope? And yet he still abandoned me. It was pathetic, and I felt sympathy towards the woman before me, despite what she had done. Alexander’s patience was wearing thin, and I could sense his irritation rise with each passing second, like a ticking time bomb about to blow. “I-I can’t do it,” I admitted, my voice trembling. “I can’t kill her.” Just then, in a fluid and quick motion, Alexander snatched the gun and aimed it at Sarah himself. “No!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, trying to knock the gun out of his hands, but his grip was too strong. The sound of the gunshot sliced through my cries, and I watched in horror as Sarah’s body fell to the ground with a thud. The metallic smell of blood stung my nostrils and a pool gathered around her form. My knees gave out from under me, and I staggered. So this was the brutality of the Red Moon Pack. I had never wanted anyone to die, especially not because of me. I only wanted to prove my innocence, but it came at the cost of her life. The truth dug deep, making me feel sick to my stomach. “The trial is over!” Alexander’s voice was loud and authoritative as he addressed the pack members. “Leave us!” Once they were gone, he turned to me, his expression blank and devoid of any emotion. “You disobeyed me.” He seethed, his voice dripping with disapproval, “And for what? Childish chivalry?” I hung my head low, my gaze fixed on Sarah’s lifeless body. “I didn’t want anyone to die,” I muttered, tears pricking the corners of my eyes. “I didn’t want anyone to die.” The Alpha clicked his tongue in annoyance, and then he grabbed a fist full of my hair, forcing me to look up at him. “You would have died if the poison was any deadlier.” He spat, staring at me like I’d lost my mind. “If not you wouldn’t be shedding tears for a traitor.” I wanted to ask if he already knew I was innocent and if the trial was just a ruse to teach me a lesson. But I didn’t dare to do so. My teeth sunk into my bottom lip till it bled, regret and guilt raging within me. He wasn’t wrong, I would’ve been in her place if I hadn’t discovered the truth, lying cold and lifeless. “Listen here Omega, sympathy will get you nowhere in this pack. If not you would lose your sanity, and later on your life.” With that he let me go, and I fell back against the the ground, my hands skimming over Sarah’s blood. He was just about to leave, but his steps faltered at the sound of my voice. “I never asked for this.” I sobbed, feeling the warmth of the blood between my fingers as they balled into fists at my sides. “I never wanted to be here….” Alpha Alexander regarded me in silence, contemplating, and then after what seemed like forever, he spoke. “I’ll give you a choice then.” Slowly, I raised my head, my brows furrowed as I could only wonder what plans he had for me next. “So Omega,” he tucked his gun back in his coat, a taunting smirk playing on his lips. “How about I take you on a mission, if you succeed, then I will let you go. But if you fail…..” he trailed off, his gaze darkening as his tongue darted out to wet his lips. “You’ll have no choice but to stay.”
