Black The New Beauty

Lindsey stood in front of the largest building she'd ever been to. She had spent four years in Seattle and had always wondered what it would be like to work here. As a Nigerian, it was not easy getting to such a place, but she was glad she did. EVON TECHNOLOGIES was the peak of success for any computer engineer and trained hacker. She had always fancied guys who could break into computers and do stuff with it. She hardly saw ladies in the field so she had trained to do it. At least now it was taking her to where she wanted to go.        She checked her watch and saw it was almost eight o'clock. She wanted to get to work early on her first day. As she entered, she sighted the lady whose picture was on almost every magazine you pick up. She was talking to someone who obviously trembled at her sight alone. She spoke with so much authority and Lindsey respected her for it. Mary Evon, as far as Lindsey's memory could go, was among fortune 500. That was an achievement for the female race.       Lindsey tightened her grip on her bag as she moved towards the receptionist. Just as she got there and was about to speak, another lady walked towards her and nearly sent her tumbling to the ground "Excuse me," Lindsey murmured calmly "You might want to keep your excuse to yourself. Do you see any burnt people here," the lady asked  It took Lindsey almost two minutes to realize what the lady meant by 'burnt' "I will take that as a joke, but if you want to know why I'm here, I work here," Lindsey retorted      She notice people were now watching intently and Lindsey had unprecedented attention  "Sorry, black people don't have a place at EVON," the lady said "And who made that rule?" they both turned their heads to see Mary standing just beside them "It doesn't have to be a rule. We all know black people reduce productivity," the lady said looking uncomfortable "Sarah , she might just be more productive than you you are," they heard a voice say. They all turned to see a guy resting on the reception desk. Lindsey had to hide her smile. "That is the height of insult Stefan. I'm cocksure your the i***t who's polluting the environment with black people," Sarah said "That's enough! Sarah get back to work and do not cause any trouble this early morning. Stefan, get this young lady something to do. I'll see you later," the last statement was directed at Lindsey. With that, Mary walked out     Sarah clucked her tongue and walked away. " I'm really sorry about that. She's against the black race," Stefan said " Racism. The funny thing is, after all the stories I heard as a child it still in full force," she said " Do not hold it against her. Something happened to her when she was younger. Her big sister told people the story," He said smiling " Her big sister works here also?" "Mary Evon is her big sister. The lady who just settled the fight if you don't know her," he said and laughed at the gasp from her " The boss?" Lindsey asked in surprise " The boss. Clear contrast right?" " Definitely. What is her job here?" Lindsey asked  " She's more like figure-head here . She does whatever gets to her hand," he said " Wow! You?" "Oh I haven't formally introduces myself. I am Stefan Dawson. We're the top dogs in charge of Government File Security and you're my newest apprentice," he said grinning. " Is it an official way of saying you prevent government files from getting hacked? she says jokingly " Maybe. Why don't I show you to your mini office. It might not be as big as you expected," he warned " I wouldn't mind working on the corridors everyday. As far as I get to walk in this empire and say I work here." He laughed, " That's a nice way to start. You haven't properly introduced yourself, you know?" " But you know everything there is to know about me. After all, my files must have got to you," she said. " It did, but I would like to hear it from you," he told her " If you insist. My name is Lindsey Gilbert. I am a 26 year old professional computer engineer. I specialize in the one thing you and your team protect the government against, hacking," she laughed "Yeah, I think I notice that fact. You should be useful. Something drew my attention though. You are from Nigeria?" " Yes I am. The heart of Africa," she said smiling " So do you have a native name or something," he asked "You'll get your tongue twisted," she laughed " Try me" " You asked for it. The full name might be longer than all your names joined together" " Fine. It's Kamsiyochukwukonemerem," as she finished saying it, he burst into a fit of laughter "Why are you laughing?" she asked "Sorry. Its just that I never expected it to be that long. Can I get a translation in English?" he asked between  fits of laughter. " No," she said and started heading for the elevator "Lindsey I'm sorry!" he shouted as he jogged to catch up with her. "I'm really sorry. It's just that I'm not used to hearing such long name," he said all serious already. "I'm not upset. I didn't want to be seen with a mad person," she said smiling. "Whoa! I see I have met my match." he smiled as he pressed the button for the elevator. He gesture for her to enter before he followed. " Beware, in less than two minutes you will meet the craziest people the world has ever produced," he said "I'm not really bothered, I've met worse" she said  He stepped out of the elevator into a big rooms with several cubicles and large screens everywhere with people and large screens everywhere with people in front of them. Just as she got in, someone shouted 'FRESHMAN' and it earned Lindsey roars and shouts from different corners of the room " People get back to work. Every minute you waste is a million dollars wasted by the government trying to fight security attacks," he told them as he walked past them " Do I get to stay here too?" she asked gleefully " You seem happy with the idea" he murmured "They look interesting" she said " Unfortunately you are not staying here. Your cubicle is among smaller group of people. Do something great and you move here. Do something outstanding and you get an office," he informed her " That means I'll be getting my office faster than anticipated," she murmured " I give the best results . Why won't I sound sure of myself?" "Alright, let the test begin." he said as he opened another door. It led to another hall just like the one they left but with fewer people. "I'm guessing this is where I pitch my tent" she asked  "Good guess don't forget do something great " he said " Got it boss" she joked with him Suddenly Stefan phone rang he picked it  " I'm sorry this is urgent I got to go I'll send someone to show you around," he said as he left the office Lindsey was satisfied at least she was able to make a friend today and a good friend for that matter at least that boosted her hope
